Spurscast #269: The Second Unit

Written by Michael A. De Leon on .

On this episode of the Spurscast, Project Spurs staff writer Trevor Zickgraf joins us to talk about last night's overtime loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

Aside from breaking down the game, we all had issue with Matt Bonner receiving the inbounds pass on the possession that could've lead to a San Antonio Spurs win.

After giving the game a thorough review, we talked about the Spurs' second unit, mostly consisting of Danny Green, Gary Neal and Tiago Splitter with a few other pieces moving in and out. Last night's second unit, which also included James Anderson and Bonner, was the reason for the Spurs' comeback and also the group Spurs coach Gregg Popovich elected to keep on the floor throughout the overtime period.

After taking a quick look at some of the above-mentioned players, we finished the show out talking about two bigs that could possibly come to the Spurs and help them where they need it the most. As we reported last week, the Spurs are pursuing Kenyon Martin and are interested in Chris Kaman, who the Hornets are looking to move.

It was a great win for us and it shows that we can play with anybody. I still think we need another big body to put us over the top. I like trading RJ for Marvin Williams of the hawks. We might have to throw in a couple other parts like some of that talent we have overseas but I am willing to do that. RJ gives atlanta a shooter that they so desperately needs and it gives us a upgrade as well. At 6'9'' 240 he can play small and power forwared. That helps against big athletic forwards like a Anthony, Lebron, Dirk, Amare, and even to give Kobe different looks. As a power forward alongside Tim he adds a baseline and foul line jump shot. He would give us more options than Blair. Another trade could be Blair, Joseph, and anderson for Jason Thompson of the kings. I know we are giving up alot but the payoff could be alot greater. Blair is too small, Anderson looks to be in his final year with the team and Joseph most likely will be sent back down. Moving forward after Tim, Thompson and Splitter is a better look than Splitter and Blair. Going back to the kings I like Donte Green for Joseph and Anderson. At 6'11'' and listed as a small forward he could could provide help in many areas. Defensively we would be great at power forward since most power forwards since most of them are quick. I only worry about his rebounding ,but I am sure that we can get him where he needs to be and plus it helps to go from a losing team to a championship team. My last is kinda a toss up but I was surprised that we didn';t pick this guy over Joseph and that is Jeremy Tyler. At 6'10 260 he is a better project than Joseph. Yes he had some issues and growing pains but he has never been coached by the greatest coach of all time. I think him learning from Tim would be huge and plus he is something like De andre Jordan. Just raw talent. I think that we could trade for him by using Anderson or one of our overseas guys. One thing about Tyler is that you can't teach size.

I love the way the second unit is playing also. I feel like they play with moreenergy than the starters. I also think that Kenyon Martin wouldn't be a good fit. He doen't fit the image of the spurs and I think he would be a smalle upgrade over bonner and blair but will he really make a huge difference? I think Kaman would be a great player to add. If the Spurs got him they would instantly have one of the best front lines if not the best. There height would dominate the paint on D and we would score on the low block easily. Splitter 6'11" Duncan 6'11" Kaman 7'0". Too much height and they are all very skilled players. It would be a great move but I don't see R.C or Pop doing it.

Ok the spurs win over the grizzlies again. I can't understand why coach Pops insists on using some players even when clearly it is their off night. I talk of Neal. Why not expand the rotation. Last night, Anderson was playing well, shooting, passing and rebounding.. .why not utilize him? Its just so exasperating to see that the talent is wasted. If Pops doesn't like the guy, then waive him. Pops does not learn his lesson! Has he forgotten Scola and Mahinmi?

The spurs have difficulty parting with its money. KMart or Kaman will not be signed by the spurs. If they will, let go of RJ, Blair and Joseph.
