Spurs draft Tiago Splitter, Marcus Williams

With their first round pick, the Spurs selected Brazilian power forward Tiago Splitter.

Splitter plays for Tau Ceramica, the same team that Luis Scola plays for.

With the 33rd pick, the Spurs selected Marcus William. I like the pick and I think he'll work out well with the Spurs.

While Jeff Garcia was in San Antonio last week, he got the opportunity to go to his first Spurs home game in a while.

As a Spurs fan living in New York, Jeff usually makes trips to Madison Square Garden, New Jersey and Philadelphia to see the Spurs on the road in the East Coast.

Ginobili finishes second in 6th man voting

According to the Associated Press, Suns guard Leandro Barbosa won the NBA's 6th Man Award. Manu Ginobili came in second in voting.

"The fourth-year guard from Brazil received 101 of a possible 127 first-place votes and 578 points from a media panel. San Antonio guard Manu Ginobili was second with 269 points and Dallas guard Jerry Stackhouse was third with 210."

Ginobili and the Spurs look for their first win against the Denver Nuggets in game two of their first round series on Wednesday.

Cuban paying off the Refs?

Well the Spurs lost a somewhat meaningless game today against the Mavs but every Spurs fan is talking about Duncan getting ejected because “Josefina” Crawford got too sensitive when Duncan was laughing while on the bench.

What pisses me off is that “Josefina” was focused on Tim that I question whether he was even concentrating on his job. The worse ejection of an NBA player in quite sometime.

According to Tim Duncan . . . “He looked at me and said, `Do you want to fight? Do you want to fight?”‘ Duncan said. “If he wants to fight, we can fight. I don’t have any problem with him, but we can do it if he wants to. I have no reason why in the middle of a game he would yell at me, `Do you want to fight?”‘

If this is true, then an NBA ref threatened an NBA player and “Josefina’s” threat of bodily harm to Duncan need to be addressed by the league. There cannot be a double standard, if a player spoke similar words he would be suspended for numerous games.

So let me understand this, a player can’t laugh on the bench? What is this fucking Nazi-ism in the NBA? Don’t celebrate too much because the SS aka the NBA refs will throw you out! Watch what you do on the bench because the Gestapo aka the NBA refs will throw you out!

Sure Tim will be fined but I sure hope made those parting words for “Josefina” worth it. And what is it with refs in Spurs vs. Mavs games? Horrible calls in last years match-up in the playoffs and now this?

Is Cuban paying off refs? Spurs fans have to wonder. The fouls called in the fourth were horrible. And what about the “new” foul created today by Josh Howard…run into Oberto with full force and Oberto gets called for the foul? Let’s not forget, “Josefina” did give Duncan a technical foul in the past Pacers game in Indiana. In the words of GOB Bluth from Arrested Development…COME ON!

Granted the Spurs did screw themselves in the crunch, shooting terrible FG% and coughing up the ball too many times, but the Mavs have to think that they gave it their all and still it went down to the last seconds to pull out the win. . . WITHOUT DUNCAN! I am sure hoping that Tim will use this in the playoffs.

To whichever NBA team the Spurs play in the playoffs, beware, “Josefina” Crawford may have caused Tim Duncan to go nuclear on your ass.

Duncan named Player of the Week

Two-time MVP Tim Duncan earned his first Player of the Week honor of the season. Duncan earned the Western Conference award after averaging 21.3 points, 10.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.3 blocks in three wins for the Spurs.

The 6-11 Duncan ranks fifth in the NBA with 43 double-doubles this season. He is averaging 20.1 points, 10.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.4 blocks in just 34.4 minutes per game.

Other nominees included Denver's Allen Iverson, Miami's Shaquille O'Neal, New Jersey's Vince Carter, New Orleans' Chris Paul, and Toronto's Chris Bosh.

Pop named Coach of the Month

Miami Heat coach Pat Riley and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich were named the NBA Eastern and Western Conference Coaches of the Month, respectively, for March.

Popovich led the Spurs to a 13-2 record last month with an average margin of victory of 15.2 points. The bench was a big part of the Spurs solid month. The reserves averaged 44.7 points, 16.7 rebounds, and 11.0 assists, while shooting 45.5 percent from the field and 85.1 percent from the free throw line. San Antonio was also the first team to ever win consecutive road games by 37 or more points while playing on back-to-back nights.

Other nominees for the Coach of the Month were Doc Rivers, Scott Skiles, Mike Brown, Avery Johnson, Flip Saunders and Jeff Van Gundy.

Live Spurs vs. Jazz postgame show tomorrow night

It looks like we will be doing another live, interactive show tomorrow night following the Spurs vs. Jazz game. This show will be a bit of a beta test of a different live service called Skypecasting. We were planning to use another service I had been testing, but our slot was filled, so we went ahead with Skypecasting. If we (hosts and participants) end up liking this over the other service, we'll continue to use it. All you have to have is Skype, which is free and available here.

I went ahead and scheduled it for 9:45 p.m. CST tomorrow (Friday) night in case the game goes over a bit.

What you have to do to listen live or participate:

Some time at or before 9:45 p.m., go to this linkor click on the link in the Skypecasts box below.

At that time, if you are signed into Skype, there will be a link that says something to the effect of "Join this Skypecast" and if you are not signed in, it will say "Sign in to join" allowing you to sign in to skype and dial you into the Skypecast conference. The conference does not require Skype credits and if you have any problems getting in, which I doubt will happen...feel free to either IM me on AIM at madgfx77 or send me a message over skype. My account name on Skype is mad0214.

As soon as you are dialed into the Skypecast, you will be fed the live show audio and can request to speak within the show page that pops up showing everyone in the skypecast.

If you want to interact, but do not want to "call-in" there will be several ways. I'll be monitoring AIM and all of the hosts and I will be chatting during the show,

Ginobili named Western conference Player of the Week

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James and the San Antonio Spurs’ Manu Ginobili today were named the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Monday, March 5 through Sunday, March 11.

Ginobili, who has come off the bench in each game during the Spurs’ current 12-game winning streak, averaged 20.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.3 steals in helping San Antonio to a 4-0 week. He tallied 23 points, four rebounds and thee assists in a 99-94 win at Portland on March 6 and scored 26 points to go with five rebounds, four steals and three assists in a 100-93 win at Sacramento on March 8.

Here is a closer look at the week for Ginobili:

March 5 at L.A. Clippers: Scored 16 points along with eight rebounds and four assists in a 88-74 win over the Clippers.

March 6 at Portland: Posted 23 points, four rebounds and three assists in a 99-94 win over the Trail Blazers.

March 8 at Sacramento: Registered 26 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists in a 100-93 win over the Kings.

March 10 vs. New Jersey: Tallied 12 points, four assists and three rebounds in a 93-77 win over the Nets.

Other nominees for Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week were Atlanta’s Josh Smith, Detroit’s Chris Webber, Houston’s Tracy McGrady, Miami’s Eddie Jones and Shaquille O’Neal, Philadelphia’s Andre Iguodala and Utah’s Deron Williams.

Live All-Star post game show this Sunday

Sunday night, my Spurscast co-hosts and I will have a live streaming interactive (call-in/chat) episode of the Spurscast. We'll discuss the All-Star game, the trade bringing Melvin Ely to the Spurs and we hand out midseason awards. It will star at 10:15 p.m. CST. But we wouldn't think about doing a live interactive show without some interaction from other Spurs fans, so we would love to have as many people in the Talkshoe chat and call in as possible to talk Spurs basketball.

To listen to the show live, you can go to the Spurscast Live Talkshoe Page on Sunday night and click on the orange LISTEN ONLY button.

Spurs send Williams to Charlotte for Ely

Update: The trade has now been finalized and confirmed.

From the Spurs press release:

The San Antonio Spurs announced today that they have acquired Melvin Ely from the Charlotte Bobcats in exchange for Eric Williams and a second round pick in 2009.

Jeff Garcia will be at the New Jersey Nets game tonight and if Ely joins the team for the game at Continental Airlines Arena, Jeff will be there to snap photos of Ely in his Spurs uniform.

According to several new sources now, the deal for Bobcats forward Melvin Ely is near completion.

The Charlotte Observer and the San Antonio Express-News are reporting that the trade will include Eric Williams and a future draft pick for Ely.

"The Bobcats and Spurs were in a conference call with league officials Tuesday afternoon to finalize the deal. Ely, a 6-9 power forward, requested a trade earlier this season in search of playing time. He's playing on a one-season, $3.3 million contract."

Spurs rumored in trade with Bobcats for Melvin Ely

According to the Charlotte Observer and NY1 Sports radio in New York, the Spurs are reportedly involved in a trade for Bobcats forward Melvin Ely and guard Brevin Knight or forward Sean May.

"The Charlotte Bobcats were finalizing a trade Tuesday morning, and there were initial indications it would involve power forward Melvin Ely going to the San Antonio Spurs...It was not initially available what the Spurs would be giving up for Ely."

According to NY Sports, the trade is imminent and involves the Spurs sending Beno Udrih, Eric Williams, a first round pick and cash for Ely and May.

I'm sure most fans would be willing to part with an underachieving Udrih and little used Eric Williams for two young forwards in Ely and May.

We'll update you on the latest right here on Project Spurs as this unfolds.

Duncan named All-Star starter

With 1,436,584 votes, Tim Duncan has been named a starter for the 2007 Western Conference All-Star game in Las Vegas.

Duncan edged Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony and Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki for the starting spot. Also named as starters for the Western Conference were Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett and Yao Ming.

This season, Duncan is averaging 20.2 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. This All-Star appearance will be Tim’s 10th in his 10-year career.

Dwyane Wade, Gilbert Arenas, Lebron James, Chris Bosh and Shaquille O’Neal will start for the Eastern Conference.

On Location: Spurs vs. Philadelphia 76ers

Hey Spurscast/Project Spurs fans! It's me, Jeff G., to give you another report from an on-location game this time the in City Of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, as the San Antonio Spurs took on the Philidelphia 76ers.

Another historic night for the Spurscast as I bring you videos, audio and photos of the Spurs on the road taking on the 76ers.

Though the night didn't begin on a good note, it was freezing temperatures, snowing and I was fighting a terrible cold. But as I settled in for the game, I noticed the Wachovia Center was smaller than expected and not big at all. As the fans were filing in, I thought I was in San Antonio because the Spurs fans outnumbered the 76ers fans. Even die-hard 76'ers fans were commenting about the many Spurs fans.

What a game it was. The Spurs had no brotherly love for the 76ers as the Spurs pummelled the Philly team. As the game progressed, I noticed that in Philly, they refer to Samuel Dalembert as Sammy. Oh and the fans really hate the trade of AI to Denver and were not afraid to boo the 76ers at every moment the team made mistakes.

Overall it was another great night for the Spurscast and Project Spurs. What other Spurs website can bring you videos, audio, photos from a fans perspective?
