Rumor: Spurs interested in Pacers' 10th pick to draft Ed Davis?

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

By now most San Antonio Spurs fans have heard the rumor that the team is interested in moving up in the 2010 NBA Draft. One team that has been mentioned in trade rumors with the Spurs is the Indiana Pacers which holds the 10th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. Currently, the Spurs hold the 20th overall pick.

According to journaltimes.com, the reason the Spurs want to move up is because the team is interested in drafting Ed Davis from North Carolina:

A rumor that surfaced at the pre-draft camp continues to percolate: San Antonio, which is picking 20th, is trying to acquire Indiana‘s pick, the 10th overall. The Spurs are believed to be interested in North Carolina forward Ed Davis.

Davis is a 6'9" power-forward who averaged 12.9 points, shot 57.8% from the field, 65.9% from the free-throw line and averaged 9.2 rebounds.

One name which is sure to be involved in any trade would be Spurs' point-guard Tony Parker. Recently Parker has been mentioned in a trade rumor between the Spurs and Pacers for the Pacers' 10th pick in the draft, Troy Murphy and Brandon Rush.

Popovich: "He was just a competitive SOB."

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

By now, all Spurs fans heard the news that former San Antonio Spur, Avery Johnson, is now the head coach of the New Jersey Nets and like most coaches or front-office personnel in the NBA, he took his first steps with the Spurs.

Johnson, best remembered by Spurs fans as the "Little General" helped the Spurs win their first NBA title in the 1999 NBA Finals versus the New York Knicks and for his heavy Louisiana accent.

But now that he is back in coaching, here is what Johnson's former coach, Gregg Popovich, had to say about him:

“I needed a point guard who was a leader, and who could command respect of the group,” Popovich said. “So Avery was home watching TV, without a contract again, and I called him and said, ‘Avery, get your butt down here right now — I’m going to give you your first multi-year contract.’

“And I knew it would be the best move I’d ever make, because I knew his heart. He was just a competitive SOB.”

“He’s got a special mind — you’re going to see it in New Jersey, even if they’re going to be young,” Popovich said of Johnson. “He taught himself what it takes to be successful in the league, and since then he’s taught others. He’ll get a defensive mentality established with the group. He’ll get Devin (Harris) in attack mode. He’ll adjust regardless of what personnel they get there.

“You know I hate superlatives, and how people exaggerate. I mean, the only ‘geniuses’ I know are people who do medical research. So I don’t want to overstate this, but Avery has a brilliant basketball mind. I knew it way back when, and I know it now.”

After his time with the Spurs, Johnson moved on to become the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.  It was surprising to hear from Spurs fans who called him a "traitor" for joining the rival Mavericks.

Though things did not work out in Dallas, he did win an NBA Coach of the Year award and his jersey is now retired in San Antonio.  Johnson knows it all began in San Antonio and especially with Popovich.  And no matter what, he will always be a Spur in the hearts of Spurs fans.

Perkins, Powell and the Spurs

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

With the NBA Finals underway between the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers, and the San Antonio Spurs working out college players before the 2010 NBA Draft, did you know Celtics' Kendrick Perkins and Lakers' Josh Powell worked out for the Spurs prior to entering the NBA?

In an interview with Fanhouse, Perkins remembers working out with Powell:

"I worked out with him [Josh Powell] when I was trying to go to the draft and we worked out with the (San Antonio) Spurs together," Perkins said once it was clear of whom he was discussing.

Just an interesting fact and something to add to your Spurs trivia file.

Spurs worked out Miami's Dwayne Collins

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

It seems the San Antonio Spurs have been working out mainly guards as the 2010 NBA Draft approaches. Sometimes much to the dismay of Spurs fans and they would prefer the team to address the lack of a big man in the middle to play with Tim Duncan.

Well last month the Spurs did work out a big man when they took a look at Miami's Dwayne Collins:

Dwayne is a MONSTER around the basket. His outside touch is a little suspect, but when you have a power game like Collins has, there is no need for an outside jumper – although it wasn't terrible by any stretch. The best NBA comparison would be DeJuan Blair meets Dwight Howard.

He is headed to San Antonio today, who had him in last year when he tested the waters.

Probably not the big man Spurs fans envision but Collin is 6'8", with a 7'5" wingspan and 232 pounds. While at Miami, he averaged 12 points, shot 60.4% from the field, and averaged 7.8 rebounds.

Noticias de los Spurs

Written by Arianne Villanueva on .

Gervin weighs in on LeBron James

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

Spurs legend and NBA Hall of Famer, George "Iceman" Gervin, weighed in on Cleveland Cavaliers' free-agent, LeBron James, and whether or not he will resign with the Cavaliers or move on to another team.

"He's a smart kid, I really like his intelligence, and he'll make the right decision that fits him personally," Gervin told The Post. "And I hope he stays in Cleveland, personally. All that glitters ain't gold. You may see all that stuff glittering with these opportunities. But we call that fake gold."

He'll make more than $100 million dollars, I don't think money is an issue," Gervin said. "If he's looking for more fame off the court, New York or New Jersey will make him more revenue off the court. Or does he want to win a championship? I think Cleveland would be the best place to win a championship."

I like him staying in Cleveland, having an opportunity to win a championship," Gervin said. "If you're going to New Jersey, what are they putting around him? They're the bottom of the barrel. And the Knicks? They're missing a point guard for one thing."

Couldn't have said it better. Knicks may toss tons of money at James but he will be in a worse position team-wise and will be a part of a rebuilding process unless the Knicks were to woe another big-name free-agent such as Chris Bosh.   As for the Nets well pass. Sure that team has nice young players such as Brook Lopez, but in the end whether it be the Knicks, Nets, Chicago Bulls or any other team with the cap-space to get James, he will be taking a step-back in his pursuit of getting a championship ring.

And with a Hall of Famer like Gervin speaking up on James' free-agency, perhaps James should listen.

Budenholzer in Spain watching Splitter

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

Not only are San Antonio Spurs fans are keeping a close eye on Tiago Splitter and whether he will or will not come to the team next season but it appears the Spurs coaching staff are keeping a close eye on Splitter as well.

According to www.marca.com, Spurs' assistant coach, Mike Budenholzer, is in Spain and was able to watch Splitter and his team, Caja Laboral, beat Palau Blaugrana. Splitter finished 16 points and six rebounds.

Pretty interesting to hear especially after a report that talks have begun between the Spurs and Splitter. Seems the Spurs are going to do their best to convince him to come to the team and forgo a pay-day to stay overseas.

Snyder joins 76ers

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

According to TNT's David Aldridge, Quin Synder has been hired by the Philadelphia 76ers to head their player development.

Synder coached the San Antonio Spurs' developmental league affiliate, Austin Toros, for the past three seasons.

The Philadelphia 76ers plan to bolster their player development side under new coach Doug Collins by bringing in former University of Missouri coach Quin Snyder to head that position, according to league sources.

The 43-year-old Snyder has spent the last three years as the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs' D-League team, the Austin Toros, where he's helped develop players like guard Alonzo Gee, who was named the D-League's Rookie of the Year this past season, and center Ian Mahinmi, the Spurs' 2007 first-round pick.
