San Antonio Spurs Fantasy Focus: Point Guard Edition

Written by Michael A. De Leon on .

HillBuy/Watch: George Hill
I'm sure Hill had a decent percent-owned percentage at the beginning of the season then found his way to a lot of watch lists and the waiver wire. He had his share of struggles through the first month of the season adapting to a new role and different minutes, but he's been on a roll as of late. He's scored in double-figures in his last six games. In a loss against the Los Angeles Clippers, he shot 7-of-16 from the field for 17 points. While he may not be the best multi-category player, if your team needs scoring help, he may pay dividends and even contribute in assist and rebounding categories occasionally, good enough for your third point guard slot.

Sell: Tony Parker
Before you run off to the comments and rattle off Parker's stats, hear me out. While Parker was, likely for the first time, a two-category stud up until about two weeks ago, he's only scored in double-figures once in the last four games. He seems to be going through a shooting slump and hit rock bottom with a two-point outing against the Clippers. While it may be hasty to dump Parker, especially since you're likely to lose all kinds of credibility, you may want to monitor him over the next couple of games. If he continues to struggle, the best move would likely be to drop one of your bottom of the roster players for another point guard and slide Parker to your third point guard slot.

Duncan the chameleon

Written by Robby Lim on .

Before Tim Duncan entered the league in 1997, the San Antonio Spurs never won an NBA title. He was the consensus number one pick at the time and many believed he was the missing piece of the puzzle to the Spurs' championship hopes. Boy, they were right!

Since Duncan came to San Antonio, the Spurs have won four NBA championships and needless to say, he was the driving force behind those four titles. But what was more impressive about those title runs is how San Antonio were never assembled in such a way which translated into instant success.

Instead of trading for star players or spending a lot of money to put together an All Star cast, the frugal Spurs did it through the draft. They built around Duncan year-after-year and become title contenders year-in and year-out.

The Spurs won their first-ever NBA crown in 1999 as David Robinson and Duncan formed an imposing front-line that was dubbed as the "Twin Towers." That same year, Duncan won his first Finals MVP.

After three years of empty trips to the Finals, they recaptured the title in 2003, with some help from a young French point guard Tony Parker. Duncan was again named the Finals MVP and is already the centerpiece of the Spurs franchise. This gave Robinson the proper send off he deserves, he left the game on top as an NBA champion once again.

In 2005, Duncan embraced some changes, although he remained the anchor of the team's defensive and offensive schemes, he allowed players around him to evolve and develop within the Spurs' system. Most notably Manu Ginobili and Parker. Together they formed a trio that is now known as the "Big Three". With Duncan manning the middle and he and Ginobili making clutch shots in the playoffs and in the Finals, the Spurs won their third title.

After being ousted by the Dallas Mavericks in 2006, they reach the NBA Finals again in 2007 beating the Phoenix Suns on their own running game during the 2007 Western Conference Finals and then swept the LeBron James led Cleveland Cavaliers, four games to none. This time, Parker was the star of the Finals while Duncan was happy and contented to get his fourth NBA title.

Last year, the Spurs tried their hardest to surround Duncan with more talent to try to win another NBA crown but it failed.

Now in his 14th season, Duncan is having a career-low in minutes, points and rebounds and yet the Spurs have the best record in NBA at 15-3.

What stands out is how Duncan is taking a backseat but still doing his best to help the team win. Case in point, the recent comeback win against the New Orleans Hornets and his triple-double performance in a rout against the Golden State Warriors.

From 1999-2007, Duncan has won with different front-court partners. From Robinson to Rasho Nesterovic to Fabricio Oberto and different supporting cast from Sean Elliot to Stephen Jackson to Bruce Bowen to Matt Bonner. The lists goes on and on.

The bottomline is Duncan was able to win with different players, with different personalities , with different playing styles. Ever the chameleon, Duncan will try one more to win it all this season.

Duncan: "As long as it's winning games for us, I'm happy with it."

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

The San Antonio Spurs are a much more up-tempo team this season. A stark contrast to the past teams which sought to grind it out, use a majority of the shot-clock and give Tim Duncan a steady diet of touches in the post.

Now with an emphasis on scoring quickly, Duncan has seen a reduced role with the Spurs but you won't hear any argument from him:

On one transition play in Wednesday night's loss to the Clippers, Parker pushed the ball upcourt. Duncan came down behind the ball, yelling "trail, trail, trail" to indicate he was the man trailing the play, often the most difficult to pick up in transition. Then the ball was passed to every Spur except Duncan, resulting in a 3-point shot by George Hill. The team has slowly shifted toward Ginobili in recent years, but never has the transition been as noticeable as this season. Ginobili leads the team in scoring with 21.5 points per game, and Duncan is fourth at 10.5 points as he attempts only 11.6 field goals per game.

"It's different," Duncan said. "It takes some getting used to. I'm a rhythm guy, and to go that long without touching the ball is an adjustment. But it is what it is. Manu is playing unbelievably and Tony's had a great year so far, Richard [Jefferson has] shown up and really played well. We've found ways to win games by moving the ball and moving the defense and making them pay that way. As long as it's winning games for us, I'm happy with it." (source ESPN.com)

This mind-set from Duncan should sound very familiar to Spurs fans. Spurs' legend David Robinson took the same approach when he took a step back to allow Duncan and other players to flourish which led to two NBA titles for the Spurs during Robinson's playing days.

However, Duncan can still makes his presence felt during games. I'm sure the Golden State Warriors and their fans know he can still be dominant when he has to. Can you say triple-double?

Stats of the Game: Spurs vs. Clippers

statofgame10The Los Angeles Clippers ended an 18-game skid against the Spurs by beating NBA leading San Antonio 90-85 at the Staples Center on Wednesday night.

Baron Davis had seven points and 10 assists in his return from a an injury.

It's now time to look at the numbers that stood out in this Spurs' recent loss.

Popovich named Western Conference Coach of the Month

Written by Michael A. De Leon on .

PopovichAccording to several sources, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was named Western Conference Coach of the Month for November.

Any coach who leads his team to an 14-1 record in one month should be a no-brainer. But the interesting thing is how Pop has won.

The once defensive-dominant Spurs have transitioned into an offensive team and the scoring has come from several players in a balanced scoring attack.

The Spurs have also scored over 100 points in 11 of their 15 games this month, found a way to fight fire with fire against the Oklahoma City Thunder and had a season-high 124 points against the Rockets in early November.

Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers was named the Eastern Conference Coach of the Month.

Gameday Q&A with Peter from The No Look Pass

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

The San Antonio Spurs look to continue their new winning streak and their dominance over the Los Angeles Clippers as they face the Clippers tonight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

To talk about the game tonight, I turned to Peter Kim from The No Look Pass -- one of the best NBA sites on the Internet -- to talk Spurs and Clippers.

Check out Peter's answers as he gives Project Spurs his take on the game, why the Clippers can't seem to get things going with such a talented roster, and much more.

Jeff: On paper the Clippers seem to have all the right pieces. Blake Griffin, Eric Gordan, etc. So what's the deal? Why can't this team seem to get it together?

Peter: On offense there isn't enough structure. Lots of times they'll run a play with a slight variation over and over with limited options. When that doesn't work, it usually ends up in the hands of the ball-handler to create. Luckily, it's been Eric Gordon who has been getting to the line at will and is 5th in the league in FT attempts. And then we all know that Blake is a monster, freak of nature, all the good stuff.

Defensively, it's been a disaster. The Clippers are 25th in the league in opponent's points per game and can't guard the 3 point line to save their lives.

We know they're talented and the sky's the limit but they're lacking what all the elite teams have: chemistry, a good bench and veteran leadership. It'll take a while before they get it all together.

Al-Farouq Aminu is having a nice rookie season. Did you expect this from him?

We really didn't expect this from him this fast mainly because it didn't look like he was going to get much playing time. He had a breakout game off the bench in New Orleans earlier in the year and he's pretty much built up momentum from there. He's also knocked down 54% of his 3's which is a nice added bonus.

If he continues to develop at this rate, there's no doubt that he'll be the Clippers' small forward for the foreseeable future.

Blake Griffin is a beast. Can you see him ending up with the Rookie of the Year award over Washington Wizards' rookie John Wall?

Absolutely. It's tough to say if he'll maintain this level of output for the rest of the season especially when Kaman returns but we know that he'll continue to fill the highlight reels.

People who don't ever watch the Clippers are tuning in and nearly everyone is saying that he is "better than advertised" and that speaks volumes.

Blake is definitely on everyone's ROY radar and even getting some talk about sneaking into the All-Star game. But we're getting a little bit ahead of ourselves here. One thing is for sure, Clipper Nation is just glad that he's in the conversation to be the first Clipper rookie of the year since Terry Cummings.(There's a little Spurs/Clipper connection).

What are the keys to the game for the Clippers to win over the Spurs?

They really need to watch out for the 3's. When it comes to the Spurs, one can't help but ask, who can't knock down 3's on that team? So if the Clippers can at least chase some of them off the line they'll be in decent shape.

Aside from that, their other major concern will be the 3rd quarter. The Clippers this season have been horrendous in the 3rd quarter so they can't let the Spurs take over in the 2nd half.

What is the key matchup to watch for in the game?

Bledsoe vs. Parker. The Clippers the past few years have had difficulty guarding quick guards, and while it seems Parker has lost some of his quickness, he's still effective and burned the rookie Bledsoe last game for 21 points and 19 points in the first meeting.

Prediction. Who wins the game and why?

That losing streak against the Spurs has continued and it doesn't look like it'll end just yet. The Spurs just seem to have the Clippers' number. March 7, 2006 the Clippers had their last win against the Spurs 98-85. I predict a similar result with the tables turned. I'll say Spurs 98, Clippers 85.

Jefferson's dunk on Lee and then some

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

In the game against the Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs player Richard Jefferson decided posterizing Warriors David Lee off an alley-oop pass from Tim Duncan wasn't enough.

Lee took exception but the players were seperated. Look I know it may have been a bit much but is it me or as a Spurs fan I kind of like seeing this from Jefferson.

Game Day Preview: Spurs vs. Clippers

Written by Robby Lim on .

SAN ANTONIO SPURS (15-2) vs. LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS (3-15)
TEAM LEADERS

Points Rebounds Assists
SPURS Manu Ginobili 21.9 Tim Duncan 9.7 Tony Parker 7.3
CLIPPERS Eric Gordon 24.3 Blake Griffin 11.6 Eric Gordon 4.9

Clippers_logoThe San Antonio Spurs improved to 8-0 on the road for the first time with last night's 118-98 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Manu Ginobili had 27 points and Tim Duncan recorded his third regular season triple-double against the Warriors by scoring 15 points, grabbing 18 rebounds and dishing out a career high-tying 11 assists.

The Spurs (15-2) will be seeking their third victory over the Clippers this season, and 19th straight in their overall regular season matchup.

Chris Kaman will likely miss his 11th straight game, while Baron Davis remains day-to-day after sitting the last 10 games.

Without two of his top players, coach Vinny Del Negro has leaned heavily on Eric Gordon and rookie Blake Griffin on offense.

The Clippers' (3-15) last win against the Spurs was a 98-85 victory at home on March 7, 2006.

KEYS TO THE GAME

SPURS:

Offense -- The Spurs have enough firepower, entering this game, five Spurs players are averaging on double figures. Making their outside shots will also be key for the Spurs.

Defense
-- Limit Gordon and Griffin on offense, control the boards and close out of the Clippers' perimeter shooters.

CLIPPERS:

Offense -- Their offense starts with Gordon and Griffin and if Kaman and Davis don't play, the young duo will again have to carry much of the offensive load for the Clippers.

Defense -- Limit Ginobili, Parker, Jefferson and Hill's dribble penetrations and contain Duncan on the inside.

INJURIES

Spurs -- James Anderson - stress fracture (out)

Clippers -- Chris Kaman - left ankle (day-to-day), Baron Davis - knee (day-to-day)

PREDICTION: The Spurs have won 18 straight against the Clippers but are playing the second night of a back-to-back. The Clippers is a young team with a ton of potential and will try their hardest to get another win.

It will be important for the Spurs to start the game strong to avoid an upset. This could be a "trap game". However, I still believe that the Spurs will win this one and extend their new winning streak to three games.

Game Day Preview: Spurs vs. Warriors

Written by Robby Lim on .

SAN ANTONIO SPURS (14-2) vs. GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS (8-9)
TEAM LEADERS

Points Rebounds Assists
SPURS Manu Ginobili 21.6 Tim Duncan 9.2 Tony Parker 7.4
WARRIORS Monta Ellis 24.9 David Lee 10.7 Stephen Curry 5.8

GoldenState_logoThe San Antonio Spurs are the only NBA team yet to lose on the road, they are averaging 105.3 points in away games and will try to start another winning streak when they visit the Golden State Warriors tonight at the ORACLE Arena.

Manu Ginobili led the way with 23 points in a 109-95 victory against the New Orleans Hornets last Sunday. San Antonio battled back from a 17-point third quarter deficit after falling to the Dallas Mavericks 103-94 last Friday -- their first loss since Oct. 30.

The Spurs (14-2) limited the Hornets to 34 points in the second half and scored a season-high 37 in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors (8-9) ended a five-game losing streak with a 104-94 win at Minnesota on Saturday night. Dorell Wright set a franchise record with nine 3-pointers while scoring a career-high 30 points. He has averaged 21.3 points in his last three games.

David Lee returned to the lineup after missing eight games with a lacerated elbow. He had 10 points and six boards against the Timberwolves.

Monta Ellis averaged 38.7 points in three games against the Spurs last season, and has scored 30 points a game at home this year. San Antonio has gone 39-5 against the Warriors with Tim Duncan in the lineup.

KEYS TO THE GAME

SPURS:

Offense -- Duncan has to set the tone on offense and open the lane for Ginobili, Parker, and Jefferson's dribble penetrations. George Hill, Gary Neal and Matt Bonner should give the Spurs the needed spark from the bench.

Defense
-- Limit Ellis on offense, control the boards and close out of the Warrior's outside shooters.

WARRIORS:

Offense -- Their offense starts with Ellis and he will have plenty of help with Lee on the inside and Wright and Curry on the wings.

Defense -- Besides containing Duncan on the inside, they have to limit Ginobili, Parker, Jefferson and Hill's dribble drives and kick outs.

INJURIES

Spurs -- James Anderson - stress fracture (out)

Warriors -- No Significant Injuries.

PREDICTION: The Spurs may have the Warriors' numbers but they cannot take them lightly. The Warriors have definitely improve from last season and are 5-2 at home.

The team that dictates the tempo of the game and plays better defense will win it. I'm picking the Spurs to win it by 10 points or less.
