5 things to watch: Spurs vs. Warriors

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

The San Antonio Spurs (58-22) will wrap up their two-game jaunt on the West Coast as they visit the Golden State Warriors (45-35) in Oakland. This will be the final meeting of the regular season between the two team and can quite possibly be a preview of a first round matchup in the playoffs. The Spurs will be without Tony Parker (sore neck), Tim Duncan (sore knee) and Kawhi Leonard (sore knee) tonight along with Manu Ginobili (hamstring) and Boris Diaw (back).

The Spurs lead the season series 2-1 with the Spurs defeating the Warriors in their last meeting 104-93 in San Antonio. Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 25 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks while Golden State was led by Stephen Curry’s 24 points, 3 assists and 2 steals.

The Spurs are coming off an 86-91 loss versus the Lakers in Los Angeles last night. The team was led by Duncan's 23 points and 10 rebounds.

The Warriors are coming off a 116-118 loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles. Curry led the Warriors with 47 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals.

And as the Spurs and Warriors get set to face off one last time in the regular season, here are five things to watch for during tonight's contest:

• The Warriors haven’t beaten the Spurs in regulation since December, 2007, in a 96-84 win at Oracle Arena.

• The Warriors are 7-0 when shooting 53 percent or better.

Injuries, accountability, and unpredictability

Written by Jesse Blanchard on .

USA Today SportsCollapsed on the floor, Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant knew immediately his season was over. His Achilles torn, his leg unable to bare his weight, Bryant somehow managed to bring himself to the free throw line for two points that would ultimately be the deciding margin.

Most would say this isn't the way a legend of Bryant's stature should go out, I would argue it's the only possible way he will go, even if he returns from this. The last few weeks had been fitting, watching Bryant literally leave everything on the floor until his body simply couldn't sustain it anymore, and even then, defiantly pushing a little further after with the free throws.

In the aftermath of the Bryant's injury there was a lot of discussion regarding the blame for Bryant's injury. In the game before the injury Bryant scored 47 points while playing all 48 minutes of a narrow Lakers win over a depleted Portland Trail Blazers. The heavy load was hardly an outlier for Bryant this season, as the Lakers have needed him for nearly every available minute to keep their playoffs hopes alive.

It's time to rest Spurs' key players heading into the postseason

Written by Paramjit Mahal on .

Imagine your team is fighting for their playoff life and your star player is driving to the basket and suddenly falls in a heap to the floor. What would Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sportsyou do?

On Friday night, Kobe Bryant tore his left Achilles heel which brought back the question all playoff teams face this time of year: Do you continue to play your stars to get the best possible seed or rest your players to avoid injury before playoffs?

The San Antonio Spurs have always clearly had the position of valuing the rest of their players over killing themselves trying to win every regular season game while chasing a better playoff seed. Remember the first meeting between the Spurs and Heat in Miami aka "Restgate"?

Ginobili frustrated with injuries

Written by Jose Grijalva on .

USA Today SportsManu Ginobili's season hasn't gone as planned and if you ask him what his mindset is, the answer won't surprise you.

In an interview with Argentine site Ole, Manu summed up his feelings on his injury-riddled season.

"Sometimes things that are beyond the unimaginable happen. What do you want me to tell you? I feel frustrated."

That might be a huge understatement.

Ginobili has only played 59 games this season and it might not add to the total heading into the playoffs. He's been out with a hamstring injury and it looks like the progress hasn't been as he envisioned it.

Ginobil has admitted he's taking care of his body better now and it's been noticeable with a slimmer look this season.

Karl, McCombs reminisce about HemisFair arena

Written by Kyle Boenitz on .

If you got a chance to see the San Antonio Spurs play at HemisFair Arena, apparently it was quite the treat. I never did. I was eight when the Spurs played their last season there, and my family didn’t go to too many NBA games when I was growing up.

But hearing stories of HemisFair makes me wish I could go back in time and see what it was like. Hearing about how the arena was  “The Noisiest in the NBA” and such a big part of San Antonio life makes me wonder how it compares to today’s loudest NBA arenas.

Apparently, to hear the “old” guys tell it, HemisFair was a huge part of San Antonio culture.

Road woes continue for Spurs in loss to Lakers

Written by Paul Garcia on .

On Friday night the San Antonio Spurs did something they hadn’t done since March 29 against the Los Angeles Clippers, score over 100 points in a basketball game.

On that Friday evening in their 108-101 victory over the Sacramento Kings, Tony Parker returned from injury and led his team with 22 points and 10 assists. He looked like had regained his speed burst that he had been lacking due to various injuries.

On Sunday in Los Angeles against the Kobe Bryant-less Lakers, Parker again looked like he was missing that extra gear. Parker seemed like he couldn’t quite attack the defense consistently and deferred to passing to teammates in the open court instead of attacking his defender.

Matchup of the Game: Spurs vs. Lakers

Written by Jose Grijalva on .

USA Today SportsThe matchup of the game when the San Antonio Spurs face off against the Los Angeles Lakers will be between Tiago Splitter and Dwight Howard.

With the news that Kobe Bryant will be out the remainder of the season with a torn Achilles, the focus on the Lakers offense will likely be Dwight Howard. Howard is averaging 13ppg and 15rpg against the San Antonio Spurs this season and will look to duplicate those numbers in the last meeting of the season between the clubs. Tiago Splitter has also been impressive against the Los Angeles Lakers this season averaging 11.5ppg and 11.5rpg this season. This matchup will likely feature more of a workload for Howard in the paint than Splitter, especially with Tony Parker making his return against the Sacramento Kings.

What Splitter must do on offense:

5 things to watch: Spurs vs. Lakers

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

The San Antonio Spurs (58-21) visit the Los Angeles Lakers (43-37) tonight at the Staples Center to begin a two-game road trip out on the West coast. Both teams are in flux right now with the Spurs dealing with injuries to key players. For the Spurs, they will be without Boris Diaw and Manu Ginobli who are dealing with injuries and recently had a shake up to the roster as the team waived forward  Stephen Jackson. However, for the Lakers, they been dealt a bigger blow to their roster.

Kobe Bryant will not play tonight as he possibly tore his left Achilles heel recently versus the Warriors in Los Angeles. It is a season-ending injury for Bryant and will hurt the Lakers' chances at any long postseason march. To add to the Lakers' woes, guard Steve Nash is a game-time decision since he has been dealing with hip and hamstring soreness

Tonight's matchup will be the final meeting of the regular season for the Spurs and Lakers. The Spurs hold a 2-0 lead in the series and will look to sweep the regular season series.

In the last meeting, the Spurs won 108-105 in San Antonio. Tony Parker led the Spurs with 24 points and 6 assists while Bryant’s 27 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds led the Lakers in a losing effort.

For the Spurs, they are coming off a 108-101 win over the Kings in San Antonio. Parker led the team with 22 points and 10 assists in his return to the court after dealing with a sore neck.

For the Lakers, they are coming off a 118-116 win over the Warriors in Los Angeles. Bryant led the team with 34 points, however, in that game, he suffered a season-ending left Achilles heel injury.

And as the Spurs and Lakers get set to tangle, here are five things to watch for during tonight's contest:

• Spurs' Parker is the only player in the NBA averaging at least 20 points and 7 assists while shooting over 50 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free throw line.

• In Los Angeles, the Lakers are 5-5 in their last 10 games against San Antonio.

Neal, Parker on Spurs releasing Jackson: Pop’s decision

Written by Paul Garcia on .

AT&T Center - Following their 108-101 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Friday, the San Antonio Spurs finally had to face the media after Jennifer Stewart-USA TODAY Sportscompleting their first game without former Spur Stephen Jackson, who was placed on waivers a few hours before tip-off.

“It’s a hard one,” said guard Tony Parker. “That’s Pop’s decision; you’ll have to ask him.”

Gary Neal on the other hand, said though he wanted Jackson around, he knows a championship is the team's focus even if it meant losing a close friend of his.

“You know Jack’s one of my close friends,” said Neal. “I wanted Jack around, but Coach Pop decided for whatever reason Jack wouldn’t be a member of our team anymore.”
