It is very rare that a NBA player wants to get traded, but for 6-foot-11 forward Austin Daye that is what he was wishing for during last Thursday's trade deadline. His wish came true a little after 3 p.m. when he got a call from his agent, who informed him he had been traded to the Spurs. So how happy was Daye?
“I screamed into my pillow, I was so happy,” Daye said.
The San Antonio Spurs traded guard Nando De Colo to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Daye, who rarely saw the floor because of DeMar DeRozan and John Salmons playing at a high level.
So what can Spurs fans expect from Daye? Not much to be honest.
Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich made it clear after practice on Monday that he has currently has no plans for him.
“I haven't been around him long enough to know what his capabilities are,” Popovich said. “But he worked hard today. We threw him in the frying pan, and we'll just see how it goes.”
That isn't discouraging Daye, who says he plans to work hard, even in his limited time on the court.
“Whatever I can do,” Daye said. “It's trying to get on the court, wherever it's at. I just want to prove myself.”
Daye was the 15th pick by the Detroit Pistons in 2009. The Spurs will be his fourth team in five seasons. His best year was the 2010-11 campaign when he averaged 7.5 points and 3.8 rebounds.

Spurs have a track record of bringing in players who haven't figured it out and helping them mature. Both Bowen and Green bounced around a lot before they got here and found their game. Spurs coach up their players better than anyone in the league. That being said, I really hope they pick up Granger, he could really help Leonard a lot as a player/mentor.
Hopefully we sign Granger and Daye all the more is relegated to project status. That is my hope. I believe we have a real chance with Granger. We will know by Saturday either way. Daye has come to the right place. Pop is the "Down and out Whisperer". Daye will be given all the support and guidance to see if he can turn out to be anything of a real contributor. I had hoped for Earl Clark, but he and Shannon Brown signed with Knicks. We shall see. Go Spurs !
This guy may be a sleeper.. Look at bright side... He may be Bruce Bowen stopper for Kevin Durant. Look at bright side Austin is 6'll small forward playing against 6'9 Kevin Durant. Austin got a freak wingspan. That is a good news!! Just add some weight he'll be fine. No worries
As high as he was drafted, this guy obviously is nothing but a bust, I don't know what the fans and the team should be thrilled or excited about ?
I have no reaction because he won't even play. He'll come in during garbage time during a blowout. But he'll just be at the end of the bench looking on. He won't get a chance unless Kawhi, Manu and/or Green and/or Belinelli all get injured. That's most likely not going to happen, so Daye will just be an insurance policy. Basically, I expect NOTHING from Daye this entire season.
@Spurs rocks kawhi has a bigger wing span than daye and he is 4 inches shorter
