Don't trust highlights thats why they call them highlights because their the best plays for the player. I recommend looking at old tapes of when he was in memphis the year they "upset" the spurs in 2011, even though manu played with a broken left hand timmy was injured, he played fairly well had great d and hit on his shot.
I watched Sam Young play at Pitt. He plays ugly, but he can be really effective when he takes the ball to the front of the rim. From behind the 3 pt line...not so much. He's athletic, strong and can grab a few rebounds. Check some youtube highlights to see what I mean.
I get the frustration wanting bigger names and or talents. Just want to encourage you guys with a few things to think about: 1) When the Spurs signed Bruce Bowen (heck, Fab Oberto and several other guys over the years), a lot of fans were really frustrated. Bruce WHO? When we signed him, Bruce was known as an energy guy who played tough D but offensively he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, not the corner 3, and anything more than 4 feet from the basket was an adventure. I'm not saying Young is Bowen. I am saying over the years I've learned to trust the Spurs Brain Trust. They often see things in a guy that most teams miss and also seem to pull things out of guys most teams can't. 2) This could be, as the article stated, a training camp signing. There will be other guys signed for training camp. One of them could be a guy the Spurs keep-and the Spurs could keep NONE of the guys. I think with our now very close ties to Indiana, the Spurs know and see something in Young that warranted the signing and at least giving the guy a shot. 3) We know Kawhi needs a reliable backup. The backup doesn't have to score-just be a solid defender. That's all we need. 4) I still think all indicators point to the Spurs making a trade or trades either before the season, or before the trade deadline. I fully expect to see a vet added to the pg mix, someone Pop will trust to spell Tony not if, but when the Spurs get deep in the playoffs, and I fully expect a big to be picked up-nothing spectacular, just a guy who can bang and grab boards (one of our other weaknesses). For those things to happen, trade(s) must happen. All this to say: Don't evaluate by what you see on paper now-that's my 2 cents.
Open-minded. Let's just wait and see. Have always liked Young's potential, but never seemed to develop into the player I thought he would be.
I'm 50/50 on this signing. If he does what he did in Memphis great, but if he plays like he did in Indy then no.
Hopefully its just a camp deal. I'd like to see some competition for the spot if they are really filling 15
Good pick up for training camp. Hope Spurs fill out their training camp roster with guys who are 'energy-type role players off the bench,' and guys who can play more than one position. I'm stoked about all the smoke that's been coming (unusual for the Spurs) out of the rumor mill regarding the Spurs interests in point guards, some bigs and swing players. They are doing their due diligence. I expect moves to be made as the Spurs do all they can to be as locked and loaded as possible and as deep as possible for the closing out of the TD era next two years. Looking forward to seeing who else they bring in for training camp
@mdeleon If i remember correctly he had one diabolical flop and missed dunk during the playoffs..
@gymbear Now I'm betting it'll be C Magette. It was strange seeing him with the French guys in that last charity game, now it makes sense seeing that CM will be in camp now
@gymbear Well said. I'm excited to see what Pop, RC, and the rest of the front office have planned up their sleeves.
@El_chingon just chubby ones
@Disgruntled_SpursFan_ what don't you like about the move?
