San Antonio Spurs' Tony Parker cemented himself as one of the All-Time best basketball players in France after he led the French national team to EuroBasket gold this summer. A first for any French team. Add the fact he has an NBA resume any basketball player would want including three NBA titles, an NBA Finals MVP trophy (2007) and several NBA All-Star appearances, there is no doubt Parker is one of the best European players ever to play on an NBA court.
Paving the way for Euro players in the NBA was Vlade Divac. During his time in the league and proved Euro players can make an impact. So it goes without saying, he might know what it takes for a foreign player to be considered one of the greats in basketball.
During an interview with the Huffington Post, when asked to list his all-time Euro team (after being reminded of Parker's accomplishment this summer with Team France), Divac's team lacked No. 9.
Thought Spurs fans? Should Parker be mentioned as one of the best Euro players ever or does he still have more to prove?
well with the exception of pau, the guys he picked are all eastern european like himself. (though germany considers itself central europe it can be called eastern more then western)
I think what people are missing here is that Vlade saw guys in their prime before the NBA. Sabonis in his youth was Olajuwon like.
before I finished reading the bit about Peja being left out I was thinking the same thing. On that list its tough to take out Drazen because he was just lights out from behind that 3. but his NBA career was missing some glory, no? my all time euro team would look different. 5. Pau Gasol 4. Dirk Nowitzki 3. Detlef Schrempf 2. Drazen Petrovic 1. Tony Parker call me bias if you want, give me these 5 and I'm winning games
Vlade is also the one who said the Lakers were contenders this year. The more the flopping smokestack speaks the dumber he sounds.
Peja doesn't belong on this list. Many here are probably too young to remember Drazen, but that kid was special. Sad ending to his life.
I'd put Tony, Drazen, Nowitzki Gasol and Marcuiulonis as my starting 5. Marcuilonis was a BEAST, and even though he played same position as Drazen, I'd put those guys there. TP, Drazen and Marcuiulonis would be quite a handful for anyone to handle.
Then I'd probably roll out Detlef Shrempf and Peja, Kukok and Sarbonis. Then I guess Vlade. By the time Sarbonis made it to the NBA, his skills had diminished because his wheels were worn down. Wish he could have been here when he was in his prime.
Not sure Manu qualifies as a "Euro" -he's a South American player. But if we're counting him as one, then by golly he's taking Drazen's place :)
no tony, no manu? thats alittle disrepect considering manu and tony have had way better careers than all of those guys combined
No reason to get mad this is just another dumb Vlade opinion. When Parker's career is over he will be on everyone's list and Vlade will be on no one's. Drazen Petrovich was a great shooter for a very brief period of time before his death but I always thought of him as the Kurt Kobain of basketball. They where glorified after their deaths but when you put them up against the greats there is no comparison. Also they played on the same team so his opinion is skewed.
Parker gets edge on Peja because he does more than just score, but you can't be too mad a Divac, since he was humble enough to not include himself. I would start Parker and make Peja the Sixth Man.
@JeffProjectSpurs My team: SF Detlef Schrempf; PF Dirk Nowitzki; C Arvydus Sabonis; SG Drazen Petrovic; PG Tony Parker. I gave Schrempf the slight edge over Kukoc and Stojakavic because he was athletic and played defense. Sabonis was the best passing big man of all time, could hit 3s (!!), and was pretty much the best defender to play against prime Shaq (with apologies to the Admiral, who was too skinny to bump Shaq out of the post), so he beats out Pau & Marc Gasol.
@JohnAbney Manu's not european !!!
@Frenchtouch i didnt see anywhere on this where it says the players had to be european by birth, i see EURO players and manu was very much a euro player before being brought over to the nba. and in addition manu is a duel citizen of argentina AND italy so even if you want to nitpick manu is legally a european!
