San Antonio Spurs' Tim Duncan is a physical specimen.
At age 37, one would think he would be a shell of his former self but he is still one of the premier big men in the NBA and is still producing at a high level for San Antonio. Last season, he averaged 17 points and 9.9 rebounds and helped guide the Spurs to their fifth NBA Finals appearance.
But before his impressive performance in the 2012-13 season, he felt he was on the decline and that his best days were behind him.
In an interview with ESPN, Duncan spoke about how staying in shape staved off the ravages of time on his body and spoke on how much longer he will play in the NBA.
He's so hard to read. It's certainly clear he knows the end is near, whether it's after this year or when his contract expires.
If I were in his shoes, I would be looking at the guys backing me up, and certainly the backup pg situation and I'd be in RC and Pop's ear asking for a vet big who is only asked to bang,play D and grab boards-rebounds are a big concern if Spurs are to get another ring for TD, and I'd be asking for a vet pg to back up TP-some guy who can drive the bus and be trusted.
Spurs have enough guys they can bundle-guys Pop isn't going to play in the playoffs, guys who are bottle necked at the 1 and 2 positions. These guys have value because they are young-value to teams who are rebuilding or lack depth.
Even Bonner has trade value. A guy who can knock down 3's (regular season only of course) and has an expiring contract and is a good 'locker room guy'-if packaged with a young guy, a team will take him.
TD deserves the best shot for another ring. Spurs are, on paper, better than last year-but still need to upgrade at 2 spots.
@JohnxDiaz i suspect you might be gearing up to pour one out for TD soon
Man I don't want to think about the Post TD Era. Spurs have to add a couple pieces to make sure when TD retires there can be no question they did all they could to give him one more ring. Our city has been blessed to have watched him play so well for so long
@projectspurs now when the day TD is done, then I fully expect you to be holding a candle light vigil, balling your eyes out. LOL
is it me or when he says he has 2 more contract years it is like he is saying he will be done after that?
He certainly looked rejuvenated last season looking like a 27 year old Tim Duncan. I wonder if it will last into this season.
@tatyana521 we all will. u see the vid? it's like he knows it is over.
@sa2ny2004 I'm going to set up a candlelight vigil up and down the Riverwalk. It's the only way.
@gymbear Don't sell your Spurs short. TD is great, but they will still survive without him. Thyey will not be a championship contender, but they will still win fifty odd games and make the playoffs.
@JeffProjectSpurs Ya, to me it sounds like he's saying two max and possibly just one.
@JeffProjectSpurs That's what I've been assuming for awhile now. I think he basically said unless I get seriously hurt or we win a ring this year I'm done after this contract.
@sa2ny2004 The vid doesnt work on my comp or phone, hope some1 posts it to youtube. am i going to cry when I see it?
@JohnxDiaz as long as you light them up in a fundamental fashion
@tatyana521 yup. but no bites
@sa2ny2004 lucky you
@tatyana521 yeah i was on press row for the finals in sa and those postgame conferences are interesting
@sa2ny2004 lol, if u watch it again, u'll see what I'm talking about. Timmy's reaction was priceless.
@tatyana521 no biting. peace peace!
@sa2ny2004 No, I liked it! Shows he's gonna keep fighting. He wanted 2 bite the guy who asked if he was sure about coming back. All fire!
@tatyana521 yup. painful
@sa2ny2004 He doesn't want 2 stop playing, ever. He'd do it 4 free if they didn't pay him. did u see the post-finals conf?
@tatyana521 it's just the look on his face when he is asked how much longer he can go. it's written all over it
@sa2ny2004 aw, maybe I'd better wait. Well, at least we should get 2 more yrs & he looks motivated 2 stay in top shape & win. GSG!
@tatyana521 you sure are
