It might be the single moment in San Antonio Spurs franchise history that may hang over like a dark cloud for years to come - seeing a lead in Game 6 of the 2013 NBA Finals slip through their fingers as well as title number five.
San Antonio was up five points with 28 seconds remaining on the game clock in the fourth quarter and the rest, as they say, was history. Miami would tie the series at 3-3 only to go on and win the championship in the decisive Game 7.
Since then, many Spurs player have been haunted by what could have been. It has been weighing on their collective minds and as the team enters a new season, head coach Gregg Popovich isn't letting the players forget what happened.
During Tony Parker's French radio show, he stated Pop showed them video of Game 6 in a long video session if anything to supply them with motivation heading into the new season.
Via French site BFM TV:
"[W]e watched the Finals again. Gregg Popovich has shown us Game #6 during a long video session (laughs). The coach was not happy. He wanted to anger us, motivate us and remind us that we had come very close last year. If we do the same this season, we can, of course, return to the Final and finish on a better note. "
This is some motivational tool Pop employed here. Nothing like getting a veteran team like the Spurs riled up before the season gets underway.
This is exactly what San Antonio needs. They need to play with a chip on their shoulders the entire season. So what better "chip" than to show them Miami celebrating a comeback win which eventually led the Heat to back-to-back titles.
In a Western Conference with hungry, young teams, such as the Thunder, Rockets, Warriors, Nuggets, Clippers, San Antonio needs every advantage they can get. It doesn't have to be a roster move, a change in lineups, or a winning streak - a simple reminder of what could have been may end up being all the Spurs needs to redeem themselves comes June.
I think some of you are in the running to be on the panel of my Dwight Howard, Vlade Divac, DeJuan Blair, GM who Wants to Play Jordan 1 on 1 Guy....PPV Event. Seriously? All of our IQ's dropped 30 points reading your posts. You know who you are.....I think MYSA (Under Spurs Nation) would really appreciate your much needed insights and thoughts. Check them out. Post your thoughts! Please
The only idiot is the person calling people names on the internet. Dumb ass well i have never been that. I graduated from Full Sail University. Shut up no thats ok. I am en ex marine; and kid you should grow up. I was only having fun with my comment you genious. Rick Barry is not the only one who pointed that out. The announcer in the game pointed it out as well as a million other. Like I said it is what it is. If you so gun hoe and ready to jump down people on the internet why don't you Join the few the proud and you know the rest. You get an espn COME ON MAN!!! lol
MIami now has two * * by their Finals wins. The first being the shortend lockout season and the second is this one. I hate to say it but Rick Barry was right 'Ray Allen traveled". Anybody else notice how many traveling calls have been made in the preseason so far. Oh well . It is what it is.
Dimitri, No offense, but the more you try to make points, the worse your arguments get. Just about everyone on here gets it. It was a team loss and there were MULTIPLE factors-both SPUR factors and HEAT factors and just the way the ball bounces factors that contributed to the loss of the series. We all hated and still hate that loss.
But it is very simplistic and illogical to lay the blame for the loss at the feet of Pop when multiple guys (guys I LOVE) from our team made mistakes and also as much as I HATE the HEAT and that whole model for 'buying' a team, they made plays when plays needed to be made and we didn't.
You need to slow you're roll. We get it. You think Pop is solely to blame for the Finals loss. Most of us disagree and most of us would say the facts (not feelings) are on our side. Move on.
Let's get ready for this years' run.
now that the dust has settled, how much blame did manu deserve? lots of sas fans were pointing the finger mainly at him among other players.
Good. The Spurs have a huge target on their backs and all of these young teams are going to come hard after them. Very good.
Dimitri-Blame all around. Pop made some decisions I'm sure he'd like to change, but the players also made their share of mistakes.
Jack wouldn't have been a factor. In case you hadn't noticed, his shot wasn't falling all year, his knees are shot and his lateral movement basically gone. He's playing where now? Exactly.
Jack was cut because he was 'negatively affecting some of the younger players on the Spurs by his actions"-if one of the players being negatively affected was Leonard, you make that cut every time. Jack was and is a headcase who thought his game was still what it was 5 years ago. I'm guessing Pop was sparing Kawhi and his locker room a lot of stress.
T-Mac was nothing but an insurance policy. His wheels are gone as well. He's playing where now? And during the brief times he did hit the floor, his shooting stroke wasn't that great. Neither T-Mac nor Jack would have made a difference.
What would have made a difference: Danny Green not going from red hot to ice cold (and imploding under the stress), Manu not being physically dinged up and trying to do what he could not do physically (overreaching). Having a reliable backup point guard to save TP's legs, someone who could have produced and given solid minutes. Having a stretch 4 Pop could actually trust in Big Moments who could have stretched the floor, opening up the lane for TP and TD. But that guy never shows up in Big Moments.
Having a big who could rebound besides Tim. Kawhi was carrying too much of a load playing small ball and TD was the only legit big Pop had who could rebound. Baynes could become that guy this year. He was not ready for that last season.
The Spurs could have used another 1/2/3 with length like Manu who could produce when Manu couldn't-signed that guy this year (Marco). Spurs could have used more physical play because their most physical player was DeJuan Blair who is listed at 6'9" but is 6'5' and would have been a huge liability. They addressed that with Ayers.
Pop played with what he had. The team got there as a team and with his great coaching and the team lost as a team with Pop making every adjustment possible and yes, some mistakes. But man-this was an everybody thing.
Show them game 6 during the All Star break and show them game 6 before the playoffs.
Locked, loaded, ready to roll.
The fool should be mad at himself not the players for that loss.
Popovich really wrecked his resume here. He got rid of Stephen Jackson who would have contributed and played for Tracy McGrady who he never used.
He started every 4th qtrs in game 4-5-6&7 with both Diaw and Splitter and Miami always made a run! or extended their lead
He kept his best defensive player (Duncan) off the court in key defensive situations late in game especially in game 6 then they make excuses he would have played the P&R not boxing out Bosh.
Sits Parker late in 4th qtrs. I don't know if there's a coach anywhere with a brain in his head that would have his best offensive player out in the most critical situations only to trust a washed up Manu Ginobili who has 1 good game in 8 at this stage in his career. Not to mention how he has always been reckless vs a team that is throwing out the supreme perimeter players in the game that force more turnovers than anyone else in the league.
Memphis forced the Spurs into turnovers you think it would have been a priority to focus on that vs Miami? and limit any decision making or ball handling Ginobili would have. Yeah game 5 was great the other 6 games he sucked!
Players missed FT and didn;t box out but coaching in key spots takes away any extra opportunities given to the team as a make up and to capitalize on it.
His players lost confidence and aggressiveness. Neal, Green were lost. He can say knock the stuffing out of them early in the series he needs to say it 4th qtr of game 6 when Miami is playing with desperation and the Spurs were barely clinging on.
I hope Pop shows it to them again just before the playoffs. There is absolutely nothing the team can do about that loss right now and I would hate to see some guys burn out late in the season because they were trying to make up for it in October/November
Are you telling me we lost game 6? I switched over to Ophrah with about a minute to go ... because we had it won.
But that now explains why I was the only one that showed up for the River Parade.
I believe they will make it back to the finals if healthy. Tim, tony, manu and the rest of the spurs cast will show the world once again why the spurs are the best franchise in sports. The odds are not in they're favor, but that's how san antonio likes it.
@unyke210 well lets see. You are a dumb ass idiot mentioning asterisk to describe the Heat Championships. That means the Spurs have an asterisk also. Who cares about Full Sail University. Prior to you mentioning it I have never heard of it. Is it a school for sailors?
Also hate to tell you if you're a Marine you are incapable of thinking for yourself. You let others do it for you. "embrace the suck"! What is a genious , genius???? I don't sit there watching "come on man!" in fact I immediately shut it off.
Do not come on here mention asterisk again. as for your idiocy there's nothing that can hold it back.
@unyke210 Wow, this is almost a stereotypically troll response. Sorry, just wanted to say that. There's nothing else to reply in this post.
@unyke210 are you a Spurs fan? if you are shut the fuck up!
1999 was a lock out season but the Spurs won and everyone competed. That asterisk talks is bullshit from Phil Jackson just to talk shit and act like no one else can win but him.
Ray Allen traveled but it took 90 days later and Rick Barry to point that out . No one on the court signaled it. ?If you were the ref you wouldn't have seen it let alone call it and unless someone gets mauled they are not calling a foul
it is what it is and your an idiot with dumbass excuses
@gymbear Ginobili should not have been in the game! There are NO circumstances that Duncan and Parker should not be in the game in the last 3-4 min of a close game to decide a championship. What happened in game 6 and 7? Both Duncan and Parker are on the bench in the most critical of possessions both offense and defense! Basically stripping the team of having the best possible chance of making a play on either end. Why? because Pop!
What great coach takes his best players out of key moments late in a game? NOT ONE!!!!!!
I think Pop and his faith in Ginobili blew the series! especially the game 6. and lets be serious game 6 was everything. I thought they would win in 6. If anyone thought they would win game 7 on the road they dont know jack shit about basketball! it doesn't happen it won't happen unless the home team is so inferior and in the NBA Finals it will never happen EVER.
lets hope this year he doesn't over play the reckless fading talents of Ginobili gain. I get his love affair and all the Ginobili has done for this team. To me the 2005 Finals MVP but he has to let go. and he can't have BOTH his two best players sitting on the bench during big stretches of the 4th when Miami is making a run and in the most critical of possesions
@JeffProjectSpurs I don't blame Manu because we don't get to the finals without him. I have never believed at blaming one player or another. Basketball is not tennis or golf it is a team sport and this is on the whole team including Pop.
@gymbear Exactly right on every point. I would like twice if I could.
@gymbear If Boris Diaw can come in and give quality minutes in the finals S-Jax can also. Shot or no shot. Diaw did pretty damn good defending Lebron, S-Jax could do the same and he would contribute more than T-Mac.
There are great coaches in all sports that deal with headcases. You dont cut someone who does play does some contribution for someone useless.
Green could not get an open shot because they were not doubling Duncan anymore. They let him go 1 on 1 and they would not leave shooters. Danny Green is not a player who can get his own shot period! but I wont complain too much about him, considering how bad he was vs OKC he made huge strides.
agree with show them and show them again and again and again. The worst finals loss ever. Worse than 1988 with the Pistons. They had them buried and Marco will help this team big time. I think they are better this year. I also think Miami will make the finals based on D-wade and how motivated and healthy he will be
@DimitriKoutsiaftis First, Stephen Jackson was cut because he felt he was better than Leonard and deserved way more minutes than him. He was being a bitch and was being too selfish. That ain't the Spurs way. And regarding sitting Parker, the guy does get tired playing the whole game and being guarded by the best defenders (ex. Allen, LeBron). Parker goes full speed and hard to the ground all game, he needs some time to recover.
@frank_mosqueda The odds haven't been in our favor in 7 years. It's fine.
@DimitriKoutsiaftis @unyke210 Your life must be an asterisk. Judging by your pic, dumb ass sums you up. If you don't know something you should look it up. If you had a brain you would have noticed i said ex marine. Charles Hamilton. look me up on facebook you can see my dumb ass excursion with lambo doors on 28s. and my grand prix on 23s. And i RUN my own corp now buddy. So go flip some burgers. My rims sizes are larger than your age and IQ...You might need to look that up as well Genius. Why don't you go check and see if mommy made your dinner...
@DimitriKoutsiaftis @unyke210 Well that's kind of a harsh reply. And even if you do get mauled like Ginobli did, you're not getting any ref calls that late in the game. But yea, Miami won Game 7 fair and square. We had a chance to win it as good as they did. And if we'd won the series, Miami fans would be crying for TP travelling in Game 1.
Refs are just always going to swallow the whistle. It is what it is.
He played well once in every 7 games. He was picking up fouls by reaching in aggressively on players. He was forcing bad shots and as he's been his entire career he was reckless. Only this time the other teams players he's matched up against have more talent and he can't hide his mistakes.
How Popovich let him play 33 min in game 6 when he piled up 8 turnovers is unforgivable.
How do you design a play with Manu and Tim Duncan late in game 7 only for him to drive under the basket vs better, more athletic talent and throw a hideous pass to Duncan with Parker ONCE AGAIN ON THE BENCH in a key spot!
Popovich should watch that game everyday! watch the series and eh will see he got worse just like Manu
As for Parker's fatigue cop out, then the coach should have planned his rotations better because when you take your best offensive player at the most critical offensive possession of the game not once but twice! there is no excuse!
@unyke210 @DimitriKoutsiaftis oh now you are insulting. Yes I am an American even though my last name is not something you would be familiar with. That comment though is borderline racist but I expect nothing less.
I own a car and probably pay more on insurance in a month than you do in 10.
Why do you feel the need to mention "you served your country. went to war and came back". Who asked you if you did or not? who asked you to go? who put you in war? did your attendance improve the world? did you build communities or wreck them? did you pick up a gun and shoot at guilty or innocent? was it for peace or war?
No one gives a fuck if you went to spread war and came back. no one asked you and no one gives a shit but you! but keep on mentioning your "service".
I haven't argued with anyone. I have made a complaint about the coach. You got on this thread talking nonsense about asterisk and bullshit. Now you were kidding. so fitting. you never said "i was only playing".
I'm glad you could spell "Genious" this time.
i will respond to you "genious". you and your service to your country. Your "lambo doors" doors on your Excursion and your "28s". with your "cussing" and your complete ignorance about Americans having a particular name. Like the inherited slave name you walk around with every day. Handed down by your masters master master.
I'm not a young Spurs fan. Been a fan since 1989. I'm hiding behind a PC.
I do hope the Spurs redeem themselves this year though but it pains me that you root for the same team I do
@DimitriKoutsiaftis @unyke210 Look Klustrfuck are you even American you sound like some quickie marts son. Do you own a car that your parents have not bought. And I served my country went to war and came back. What have you done but act like you know any and everything about basketball. Once again you have argued with everyone on this thread like you know more then They do.. Hiding I gave you my face book if you are so bout it my address is there we can youtube your ass whooping. But boss i guess you didn't understand when I said I was only playing about the 2 * * next to Miami. Well just incase you need me to translate " I was joking " Hope that was clear. Also smart guy you see the 210 in my name and I'm on a Spur web site. You seem like a Genius do the math.
The only disgrace is you kid. Arguing with any and everyone speaks for itself. Go Spurs Go. Honestly you responding to everyone by calling names, cussing and what not, makes you and your parents look bad. They raised you. I pray for you ignorance young spur fan. Feeling protected behind your CPU is fine but at least I know most of your hate will go towards non Spurs fans.
2014 is redemption year for the Spurs. Coming so close the last two years hopefully puts them over the top this time.
hmm mm go flip some burgers because you run a corporation. How about we go own a burger stand that makes more money than "corporation" you own.
you're talking about IQs you can't spell genius and no intelligent person would stake his claim to like on his "lambo doors" and his 28s. A real success would actually go buy a Lamborghini and shut the fuck up about it.
its obvious what gutter you crawled out of , got a free ride in the Marines now run some small business and blow all your money on car and then turning it into an abomination. They must love you when you drive by in the hood but no where else in society does your car matter.
what matters is that you got on a basketball post, have no clue about basketball, made a comment that makes no sense. then went on to misspell your intelligence only to come back talking shit about peoples picture and how you have some car and rims no one cares about.
Semper Fi jackass! disgraced to the uniform and to society
@gazfather @DimitriKoutsiaftis @johngiang3 dude he was out of control! he took 4 steps and flopped! Parker MUST be the one with the ball there not someone out of control trying to set a finals record for turnovers.
its been 6 years since the last ring. And the previous teams were more built on defense than they are today.
I dont know if this is our (i hate saying that since I dont have a jersey with my name on it) year. I thought for sure we were going to the Finals up 2-0 vs OKC. We were playing better than anyone I can remember and boom! its all collapsed.
I know this though, that is as close as any team in the history of this league has come to winning a championship! they had the trophy literally right by the bench!!!! and the collapse was self inflicted.
Poor substitutions, poor game planning, lack of execution, missed FT, not boxing out. To listen to Popovich, scoff at the idea of fouling up 3pts to put them at the line and saying "thats what they do over in Europe" when he himself has ripped talent and coaching styles from there should piss people off.
what you got out of these Finals is hopefully Kawhi progresses into something great. Tim Duncan is still the best PF in this game. Best big man period! Parker is an elite player and MVP candidate every year. Ginobili is 3 degrees short of being well DONE! and Popovich who I used to think he was on the level of Phil Jackson, Riley, Daly as being one of the great modern coaches in the NBA took a massive step back and I will never put him in that class ever again because he doesn't deserve it.
I meant Kawhi missed that crucial game-winning FT at the end. And my point is that any ONE of those things could have won the game for us. Ginobli did get fouled - it wasn't flagrant but I thought it was obvious. At any other time, it would have gotten called. Sure, Tim could have gotten a rebound. But EVERYONE's 3 point defense could have been better when 3s were the only way for the Heat to tie it up.
And I'm sure Pop has watched it. Many, many times. I'm saying that whatever he's done and whoever he's had faith in has gotten us 4 rings. We didn't get this one for many reasons. You're right though. I think we'll be back this year. And if everyone stays healthy, this is our year.
@gazfather @DimitriKoutsiaftis @johngiang3 my point is that Pop should be the one watching that game and series over and over again. His substitutions and faith in certain players, especially Manu was horrible.
They lost game 6 because of TWO rebounds. and THREE free throws. But Duncan was not in the game on the rebounds and Parker was not in the game when Manu decided to take 6 steps and beg for a foul.
The Spurs had them beat! dead to rights and they let them off the hook.
They are still the bets team in the West. No one else has proven jack! OKC is not as talented. Clippers and Grizzlies dont scare em a bit and Houston who's increased the talent greatly has to prove it.
We can't just say we got beat by great players and thats it. Lebron sucked! he played well for 2 games and 8 minutes.
We lost because of luck and because we faced a superior team in Game 7. Yes, Manu had many TOs. But he was the sparkplug that helped us win game 5. We lost because of a missed FT, a missed rebound, two fantastic 3 point shots (one to the greatest 3 pt shooter of all time).
We lost 1 in the best contested finals series in a decade facing a generational talent and a damn good team.
We won 4 championships doing it Pop's way.
Let it go.
@DimitriKoutsiaftis @johngiang3 If a guy is going to sulk on the bench and be a problem to the chemistry of the team, then clearly that isn't the Spurs philosophy. He put himself over the team. Sure, he could of been useful, but he thought he should be deserved more minutes over Kawhi and was actually arguing with Pops.
Why would you compare Eurobasket to a grueling NBA playoffs, which is completely irrelevant. Why would I watch Eurobasket, I'm not even a Spurs fan. If you even look at the Final play were he had to run all the way up court for that game winning layup and he missed it, he was dead exhausted. It looked like he had nothing left. The guy is 31, and being guarded by LeBron in the fourth and trying to get a shot is exhausting. There were some mistakes by Pop, like taking out Duncan for that rebound that led to that Ray Allen three but you have to roll with Manu in this situation. They needed another ball-handler.
If Boris Diaw can contribute S-Jax definitely could. Regardless of attitudes. You act like championship teams in all sports don't have misfits on their rosters.
You think Parker asked out of game 6 with 10 sec to go? or Game 7 with that disgusting play where Ginobili is handling and passing the ball under the basket? Or did you bother watching him in the Euro championship playing nearly every minute and demanding the ball.
Popovich must take a massive hit for this loss. He is not bulletproof, he screwed up royally. Coaching and his faith in Ginobili.
@DimitriKoutsiaftis @johngiang3 Yes, I know for a fact S-Jax wanted to play more than Leonard. He felt he was better and was pissed that a younger kid was passing him by. But everyone knew Kawhi was better. Jax is just not a team player and that is not part of the Spurs philosophy.
As for Parker, you manage a guys minutes depending on the game as well. If your team is down in the third, you can't really bench him as well or you would be even more behind. Parker even asked to be out taken out. And with Parker being a older player guarded by LeBron and a good defensive player in Chalmers, you could tell he was exhausted as well.
