The 2013 NBA Draft is rapidly approaching which means news and rumors are flying about on who might be going to which NBA team and at what spot come this Thursday night.
As for the San Antonio Spurs, they have pick No. 28 and according to NBADraft.net, they might have made a promise to senior guard Erick Green of Virginia Tech.
Sources have indicated Spurs may have a promise with Erick Green at 28. #draftrumor— NBADraft.net (@nbadraftnet) June 26, 2013
Green is a 21 year-old, 185 lbs., 6'3" combo guard. He led the nation in scoring at 25.4 points per game in the 2012-13 season and handed out 3.9 assists while shooting 51% from the field and 39% form the three-point line in 36 minutes per game.
For an in depth look at Green, here is a video scouting report from Draft Express.
This all could be simple posturing from the Spurs if true but what do you think Spurs fans? If this draft rumor is true, do you want to see the Spurs use their pick on a guard or does the team need size or something else to improve the team as the draft nears?
Better than Corey Joseph in offense. But been saying this always before the draft, they need an athletic big that can really defend and rebound. It's time to part ways with Bonner and DB.
Watching the film, he looks a lot like a young Tony Parker. Get the ball, jet up the court and take it to the basket. Maybe Pop is trying to find Parker's backup so the offense dosen't change when he's out? Looks good to me. I'm not going to argue with Pop and Buford if they draft him. They know what they are doing.
@ugotlo That might be the case. Throughout the season, ESPECIALLY IN THE FINALS, the spurs' offense absolutely lagged when Parker was off the court. As soon as he got off the court, the scoring stopped, ball movement ceased, and the other team would usually come roaring back. I remember all year when the spurs played on national tv (TNT, ESPN), the commentators would always point out how the spurs don't have a true back up to Parker and have to resort to 6'6 Manu as the primary ball handler. This was always brought up and in the Finals, it was exposed. Manu is a shooting guard who plays better off the ball. He's better moving around, and receiving the ball on the perimeter where he can make plays by passing, shooting, or penetrating. But actually bringing it up the court and running the offense? No, he tried that for a while now and it backfired as soon as the Finals came along. Manu truly showed he can't play point guard and be the primary ball handler because of the incredible amount of turnovers he had in the Finals. If the spurs get this guy, at least I'll understand why, and it does have some credibility. None of the current undersized guards have proven they can take the load, and it seems the front office is looking for someone who can create their own shot, an ELITE scorer, someone who can CONSISTENTLY put the ball in hoop at the guard position other than Parker. Neal is too inconsistent, and as of right now, Danny Green can only shoot 3's, but at least he proved he can defend well. I don't know about Joesph, he's still young and improving. What about De Colo, why bring him on the team if we will never use him? We have sooooo many small guards, what are we going to do with all of them? I've known this for a while, but never paid much attention to it for some reason......we really don't have a true scoring guard on the roster other than Parker. Parker is getting older, he can drop 20 in a game, but uses a lot of energy to do so nowadays. Having a guy who consistently dropped 20+ points a night in the freakin ACC shows the guy can score and score big. So, after some solid meditation on this (not really:P) I think this could be a valuable pick. I just hope we can at least get SOME SIZE at the 4 or 5 position in a trade or something. If there is a time for the front office to do some draft magic, now is the time.
I'm calling BS. Maybe the Spurs will take him, but there's no reason to "promise" a senior anything. You take them if you like them, but they're not pulling out of the draft.
1 more day and we'll see. We do need other help, but maybe he is the best player available regardless of position ?
If we don't overspend on TS, or Manu, we have room for a sf, and maybe a 4-5 player. The next week will be fun. Summer league will be even better. We just shouldn't stand pat and tie up our future with paying over $6mil to TS or Manu.
The kid's offensive game is explosive and versatile. Kind of like combining the styles Gary Neal and Tony Parker. He appears lacking some focus on defense and some strength physically. Other than that I'd be very pleased especially if Neal walks. I know we probably dangle our 28 and DeColo or someone to move up for the right player. Jamal Franklin perhaps?? Spurs have some money to go after bigs in FA or trade or our look among our own. I still like J-Mike Green from Toros. He can play 4 and defend 3's even. Good range on shot and rebounder and very long and athletic. Al Jefferson especially if Tiago walks! Go Spurs !!!
What is going on here? We already have FIVE guys who are undersized guards. Why do we need another? i
he put up 25 a night against elite competition - ACC - which is pretty impressive. look at a lot of those clips in the video, duke was the opponent. he's actually a few months older than corey joseph.
Really??? Why again a PG? What will happen to DeColo, CuJo, Marcus Denmon, already at backup PG. Why do we have to draft a guy at 6'3" at pick 28 when he is expected to go mid second round. Our pick 58 will be garbage as we all know.
@nish21 Of all teams, you say that (we all know) that the Spurs pick at 58 will be garbage??? You cannot consider yourself a true Spurs fan if you don't think that the Spurs organization can draft a diamond in the rough with even the last pick in the draft.
At first I am not liking this but could start out as good replacement for neal if he goes. Then later he can work himself in playing next to Leonard. Looks like he can handle the ball and create his own shot. Wouldn't cost too much could pay off down the road. Then we can spend our money on a back up sf and pf/c.
sometimes i dont understand my spurs, we obviously need more talent and more size and a backup small forward for kawhi, but the team insist on adding more guards. i just dont understand.
