i'm an ohio state guy here keeping an eye on deshaun. his draft spot was indicative of poor nba management. very spurs-like to get this guy. it seems other franchises perhaps don't have the time to watch games. deshaun will make big time pivotal plays in the nba playoffs very soon. it makes me wonder where guys like dirk and bird would get 'projected' in today's game. i'll take the guy that wins huge games. his pedigree is clear.
I cannot help but think of robert horry when I see this guy play. Granted Horry is light yrs defensively ahead of Thomas but his offensive game reminds me of horry during the Houston years. Probably the most under rated part of thomas's game is his ability to allow the game to come to him. He is not looking to take over but play within the team concept. fitting for pop's system.
if you look at his pre-draft work outs, not very impressive. I'm not surprised he went so late, he's really nonathletic lol I mean there's a huge difference for instance if Kwahi's vertical was like Lebron's he'd be number 1 of the draft, so these "athleticism factors" go a long way in determining one's value. They typically call it talent but it's more of how NBA ready your body truly is, if Thomas was as strong/athletic as Carmelo, he could probably score just as well in the league, the thing is, he's not. So he's much more easily exposed especially on the defensive end. There's a reason why this guy played against PFs in college, he's not quick enough to even stay in front of 2s and 3s in college, so at an NBA level he has no shot. Do not get your hopes up based on this video!
deshuan could be the next chandler parsons, a guy who stayed in college too long according to some people, anyway they said the same about parsons, thats why he was drafted in the second round instead of the first round, they said hes not that athletic and isnt that great of a defender, but they left out the part that he has a very good IQ, knows how to play and is very skilled. thats basically what they are saying about deshuan thomas
you dont have to be a great athlete to be successful in the nba, its a plus, but it doesnt make or break a guys career. thomas has the skills to stick in the league, its gonna have to be on the defensive end, if he was a better defender he would have been a first rounder, to me hes like a marcus thornton, marcus fell to the second round a couple of years ago because he wasnt a great athlete and he was a poor defender, but boy can marcus thornton light up the score board, i think thomas wont ever be a good or great defender, but he will be at least an average one playing under coach pop. this guy is a teller gary neal but also can score inside and rebound a bit too. he has all the makings of a second round steal. go spurs go
