LAS VEGAS -- Summer League is for three things: Improving your game, competing for a roster spot or experimenting with someone's game. For example, Cory Joseph is working on improving his game, particularly the floor leading aspect. Everyone not named Joseph, Aron Baynes and Nando De Colo are competing for a roster spot, be it with the Spurs or another team as there are coaches, general managers and scouts from all 30 teams here watching games. Meanwhile, Nando De Colo is experimenting with a new position, shooting guard.
We should say it's not completely new. De Colo often plays alongside Tony Parker on the French National Team. However, when it comes to the San Antonio Spurs, it's a new position. De Colo spent a considerable amount of time working off the ball. While he didn't shoot particularly well, De Colo showed an ability to get his shot off well if the space was there or use a screen to create for himself or others. Summer League coach Ime Udoka said the team thought De Colo looked good in the role despite his low shooting percentage.
"We really want to see him work off the ball. Also defensively he’s guarding bigger guys, two guards," Udoka said. "We want to see a little bit of that so it’s a benefit for him and we think he did a good job."
The Nando shooting guard experiment would give the Spurs another shot creator off the ball. Whether that will eventually create some playing time competition between he and Marco Bellinelli. If De Colo does develop an off the ball game, his skill set will start to look very similar to the newest Spurs guard.
I don't see Nando as a starting PG, SG or 6th man. Maybe not even the best second unit guy. I also don't see Baynes as the replacement for a retiring Timmy in a couple of years. We've got Splitter but still need a dominant big on the other side. If a proven center (maybe a backup from another team) can be obtained with a sign and trade for Blair and using Nando (and/or), Baynes as sweeteners...I'd pull the trigger on it...but the Spurs have yet to hire me into a decision making position and I doubt they will!
Nando and aron baynes suck trade them waive them, but do something with them we need roster spots if gary comes back and maybe to sign oden if he so chooses. Just a thought. Or sign desaun thomas his pretty good
So far, Nando is 7/27 for 19 points in over 60 minutes. In summer league. For a SG. I think Gary Neal is more deserving of this roster spot. Maybe Danny Ferry will take Nando off our hands ...
It seems to me that they may be shifting postion of players this year. Maybe Tony, cojo and mills at pg. manu Marco and nando at sg and kawhi and Danny even manu at sf. Which is why the experiment. Just a thought.
@TomArmstrong I think this maybe. Bellineli removed some of the need for a creator on the wing. We are both PG and SG heavy now. No question Green is going to play some time at the SF spot, but I still think our roster needs a little rebalancing. Nando is looking for minutes this season, and we may well be using the summer league to show his versatility to clubs that can provide them. If that's not the plan - hell, expanding your game never hurts I suppose.
