On Wednesday, a report was released stating the San Antonio Spurs were one of five teams interested in New York Knicks free agent forward Kenyon Martin.
Now two days later, the Martin-Spurs rumors continue as Jared Zwerling of ESPN New York describes.
Hearing the Spurs are in hot pursuit of Kenyon Martin. #Knicks still in play, among others.— Jared Zwerling (@JaredZwerling) July 6, 2013
As discussed in the previous article, Martin is already entering the tail-end of his career and can be a decent forward in limited minutes off of the bench. He’s no longer the leaping-speedy forward that made him a one-time All-Star, but he can play established minutes as help defender and he knows how to work in the pick-and-roll.
On whether or not the Spurs can afford Martin remains to be seen because even though the team has verbal commitments from Tiago Splitter, Manu Ginobili, and Marco Belinelli, no deals or actual financial figures can be released until NBA contracts are signed beginning on July 10.
Martin is the type of veteran-player who could take less money for a chance at a championship with San Antonio, and he did just finish in New York earning $437,470.
Though the Spurs’ frontline core will be back from going all the way to Game 7 of the NBA Finals, there is a vacant position on the roster as DeJuan Blair is expected to sign elsewhere during free agency.
What do you think Spurs fans, should the Spurs look into adding Martin?
T wolves just released Geleble and Steisma. We might be able to get them cheap. Greg can block some shots
I don't think we can afford AK47 now. I am surprised that we havn't looked at Carlos Delfino. Houston cut him to make $ room for Howard. I would like to see him in the silver and black. Still need a big as well. Not sure if we can afford them but Dalembert and Kaman are still out there.
That's the problem if you put Kenyon martin it's gone to be 5 guys 30 years old or more so you talking about 45% of the team is old when that happen you lose the tracks of the game when you have to send the big guys to the bench because they don't have the energy to play. 2 or 3 veterans it's good for the team experience it's necessary in the teams but 5 old guys I think is to much but I am still 100% spurs fan...
bunch of haters in the house ehh? old teams win championships; Lakers, Celtics, Heat, Spurs, Mavs, Pistons all of those teams were up there in age every year they one and that's just the past 14 years of champions the rockets were old and the bulls for at least the last 3-peat were up there in age so now I'm going back 19 years and all the teams were old. Martin's a good player an upgrade compared to dejuan blair so yes I'll take this and for really cheap too?? thank you very much good deal if we get him but I'm not too sure I see him as a spur
I think Kenyon Martin has wagged his finger at the Spurs in the recent past. I find this rumor to be humor.
I think the spurs going to need more doctors. to much old man's playing in the team.... they look like a retirement team...
@raly1977 Well, since the Spurs came to an agreement on Pendergraph, I think the Spurs' pursuit of Martin is over.
@raly1977 old teams usually win championships
@raly1977 Duncan, Ginobili, Parker, Diaw, and Bonner are the only ones over 30 years old. Everybody else is either 28 or younger. So, how are the Spurs as a whole "old"?
