Garnett's trash talk tarnishes reputation

Written by Kyle Boenitz on .

Kevin Garnett’s fondness for trash talking is no secret around the NBA. The Boston Celtics power forward runs his mouth as much as anyone in the league.

Most recently Garnett’s alleged comment about Carmelo Anthony’s estranged wife tasting “like Honey Nut Cheerios” inspired Melo to seek him out in the Celtics’ locker room after the game and even wait by the Celtics’ team bus to settle things.

Anthony’s actions after the game cost him a one game suspension, so it looks like Garnett gets the last laugh, even if he is a total… (insert your own special word here).

This isn’t the only time Garnett has gone too far with his insults either. San Antonio Spurs fans will surely remember Mother’s Day in 1999 when KG allegedly told Tim Duncan “Happy Mother’s Day, mother******,” knowing perfectly well that Duncan’s mother had died when Tim was a teenager.

Garnett and Duncan are both going to the Hall of Fame, and they’ll be remembered as the two greatest power forwards of their time. People will debate until the end of time who had the better career when all is said and done.

But how much is Garnett’s legacy damaged every time something stupid comes out of his mouth?

To me, it’s sickening. Talking trash about a member of another guy’s family is cheap and tacky and Garnett should be embarrassed by his childish behavior.

The history books may only remember the numbers that KG put up over his career, and that may draw eternal comparisons to Duncan, but people who saw the two play will remember TD being in a class by himself just because of the class act that he is.

As fans, we don’t get to know most of the things that are said on the court, so we only know a few of Garnett’s outrageous comments. It’s a shame he never has to answer to anyone for some of the things he says, but he’ll always have to deal with the blemish on his reputation that comes from being a classless jerk.

What do you  have to say Spurs fans? You know about his alleged remark to TD about his mom on Mother's Day so what say you about KG's trash talking?

it just makes KG nothing more than a fake tough guy.  now that is not to say he is not a physically tough as a player because he is, but in my book that's what makes him a fake.  with the god-given skills he has, why he thinks trash and mental intimidation is his best weapon is beyond me.  being one of the best in the game apparently isn't enough for him.  trashtalking must be his way of making sure the world knows it, and people seeing this is apparently not as good as people hearing it.  too bad he feels that way, because that's how he'll be remembered.

"allegedly".... "allegedly"..... blast him as if it was fact.

I simply ask the following questions:

Where is there proof that Kevin Garnett said that to Tim Duncan?  There are unsubstantiated rumors that he said something, but no one has confirmed that.

Where is the proof that Garnett said the Honey Nut Cheerios line?  Because some idiot online said he heard it from someone and it took off on Twitter... does that make it true?

KG says some outlandish shit, I'm not going to pretend he doesn't.  But I do have a problem with hiding behind "allegedly" but then trashing the guy for things that may or may not be true.

@jjkaralis What are you talking about? As the article says, we don't even get to hear the other things Garnett says on the court because other players aren't calling him out about it. He obviously said something to Carmelo that was extremely offensive. I remember Garnett hitting Duncan in the head to try to start something earlier in his career. That is not an "alleged" hit, it's on YouTube if you want to go see it.

Bottom line is your boy Garnett is a punk. Talking trash about deceased family members and girlfriends is childish. How about instead of trying to get in people's heads by delving into their personal lives, Garnett does so through his game? Now when he tries to intimidate people, they're usually white, foreign, and usually smaller players he picks on. He's nothing more than a grown bully. Garnett should have fun watching Ray Allen nail 3's in his face as the Celtics lose in the second round of the playoffs to the Heat.

@CraigThomas you can call him a punk if you want.  But get the facts right.  And look at you.... in the same paragraph as you trash him for what he "allegedly" said to TIM DUNCAN and CARMELO ANTHONY.... you then turn around and drop the "usually white, foreign and smaller.  Tim's the same size.  Melo's almost the same size.  last I checked, they're black.  So's Channing Frye.  So are half the guys KG messes with.

Check yourself man.  Hate KG all you want.  I'm not trying to change your mind.  What I am doing is calling bullshit on why you're hating him.  You don't even know what he said.  You just choose to believe rumors because it somehow justifies you hating him

@SpursG "Duncan have to lessen his money to get guys like Manu and Tony" What I meant on that is when the time those two guys became free agents after their rookie contracts got expired. TD had to chip his pay cut to accomodate those two important guys. Something KG never did in MIN. Something that kept him from winning titles.

@jjkaralis  @JimmyPriour  @CraigThomasSorry but KG has and always will be dumpster juice! He is not even close to being compared to TD. Only TD has been called the best Poward Forward ever. For Karl Malone (who is the only other who should be compared to TD) to adimit it is obvious. Timmy is in a class all his own. KG is good maybe even great, but not one of the all time greats.

@jjkaralis  @JimmyPriour  @CraigThomas KG didn't get titles as many as TD for one reason. Greed. KG want al the money allthe attention. Minnesota was penniless to nab quality players to surround him. Duncan have to lessen his money to get guys like Manu and Tony. And that mentaliy made a domino effect on Manu and Tony. KG never got those titles because he wants more money. And that's the bottom line.

@jjkaralis  @JimmyPriour Maybe not, but KG would definitely not have won anywhere close to 4 titles with Timmy's teams and the punishment of being fed literally every play down the court from 99-06. On top of that is KG is not a remarkable passer like Timmy so having Manu or Bowen spot up while KG goes to work would not have been successful.

I say KG wins one, at the most two rings in 2007 with Tony Parker's breakout and Manu being the 6th man, and possibly in 1999 with D-Rob still a force. But KG could not have carried the Spurs past the Lakers or Mavs in the playoffs like Timmy did every year.

While I have not heard about the comments KG made to Tim Duncan before, it is widely reported just like the Charlie Villenueva comments. Why would people just make up stories about KG if they didn't have some truth to them? Duncan definitely has animosity towards KG which says something because he RARELY holds a grudge.

Spurs fans respect KG and his intensity (I'm glad he didn't shake Ray Allen's hand this year), but the excessive trash talk and the intimidation against smaller players is classless.

@jjkaralis  @CraigThomas Hed have more than 1 I guarantee that.  The 03-04 Minny team was nasty, and he played with Marbury in his prime and Cassel in his, so its not like he didn't play with good players.  Not to mention KG has been playing with 3 other HOFers since he arrived in Boston with only 2 finals appearances to show for it.  Timmy makes everyone around him better on both sides of the ball, KG only does that on D.

I never made anything up to hold against him either.  It doesn't matter what he says to me, its all about what I observe.

jjkaralis
jjkaralis

@JimmyPriour  @CraigThomas Flip teams and you think TD wins all those titles?

Timmy's the best, but don't play off KG like he's not right there with him.  How many Hall of Famers did KG play with in Minnesota?  Basketball is a team game... there are 8 or 9 other guys who play, and have impacts.

I know what KG is.  I know what he does.  But I'm not making shit up and holding it against him.  I've been critical of things that have actually happened.... but not rumored comments.

Just because things are believable, doesn't make them true.

@jjkaralis  @CraigThomas Lots of players talk trash in the NBA. Melo and every other NBA player has had to deal with it their entire career.  To make him try to confront him afterwards not once, BUT TWICE? That HAD to be an extreme comment.  Arguing otherwise makes you look like a KG apologist.  I don't even like Melo, I could really care less what KG or anyone else says to him, but when you brush 90% of the trash talk off your shoulders, and react the rest of the time ON the court like Melo is known to, it had to be something extraordinary to make him react on the court, and then twice off it.

What hes done on the court is win a fraction of the championships and individual awards and had to jump ship from where he was drafted to win a championship.  TD took over playoff series after playoff series getting his team to the championship through teams KG couldn't defeat.  Regardless of character concerns, TD has separated himself from KG a great deal.  The truly great ones always do.  KG to TD is like Clyde to MJ, cool story, but no way

jjkaralis
jjkaralis

@JimmyPriour  @CraigThomas Right, because Carmelo has always had a cool head an no history of losing his temper?  Gimme a break.  People are making it sound like only the worst possible comments are necessary to piss Melo off.

Again... reality, people.  It's not like Melo's a choir boy or the epitome of cool nerves.  And watch any basketball game closely enough... those jabs happen everywhere, with everyone.  Wake up.

I love TD and have crazy respect for the Spurs.  But let's be real.  KG is right there with TD as one of the all time greats.  Don't let your hate cloud the reality of what he's done on the court.

@jjkaralis  @CraigThomas You don't have to hear what he says to know he runs his mouth constantly and tries to get under players skin, definitely in a way that reminds you of a bully.  You can see him doing it nearly every game.  Regardless of what actually came out, it had to be pretty nasty to make Carmelo go to the lengths he went to try to confront him.  Not to mention the dirty jabs to the ribs and stomach he likes to give when hes setting a screen.

As to if the other party was accused.. thats the difference.  Timmy has class, and never has anything like this pop up where accusations can be made.  Just another one of the reasons why KG doesn't belong anywhere near TD in the annals of greatness

jjkaralis

@CraigThomas Humph?  Zaza?  They're the same freakin' size as KG.  I know.. I know.... the reality doesn't fit your distorted view of KG as a snarling, evil, Disney cartoonish villain.

I know he's no saint, that's for sure.  But I'm also not going to blast him for rumors  or some made up racism the fuels who he picks on.  And that's all I'm asking of others.  There is NO confirmation that KG said that to Duncan.  None.  Not in SI, not anywhere.  But it's played off as fact.

I ask you.... if it was you that was accused of saying it and there was no confirmation anywhere of  it... how would you feel about people just accepting it as fact anyway?

Hate him for what he's ACTUALLY done... and ACTUALLY said.  That's all I'm saying.

@jjkaralis I was talking about physical intimidation on the court rather than trash talking. Kris Humphries, Jose Calderon, Marco Bellini, Zaza Pachulia, Rudy Fernandez, etc... The list goes on of smaller, white, and mainly foreign players tough guy Garnett has gone after.

And when he went after Tim, he did it like a girl by smacking him on the back of the head while he wasn't looking instead of being a man and taking him on face to face. Garnett always has been and will be a punk. I respect his intensity, but useless trash talking and fights with smaller players don't impress anyone.
