Delfino blames food poisoning on Ginobili; may seek revenge

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

NBA teams will do whatever it takes within the rules to make sure they have every advantage against an opposing team.

Whether it be some advanced scouting, film break down, or statistical evaluations there is much NBA teams will do to ensure they are fully prepared. However, maybe San Antonio Spurs' Manu Ginobili went the "extra mile" for the team when he had his fellow countryman and friend Rockets' Carlos Delfino over for dinner the night before the two Texas teams squared off last week in San Antonio.

Delfino sat out of the game thanks to a bout of food poisoning he blames on sausage served to him, and only him, when he had dinner with Manu's family (via Houston's Chron.com).
“It’s funny,” Delfino said of dinner with his friend and Argentina National Team teammate. “I went to his house and everyone eats the same, but this little piece of sausage I get. Then when I get to the hotel … by the time I take a shower I ate a little piece of M&Ms. That was the only things I ate different from Ginobili’s family. I’ve been down for 72 hours and they are everybody healthy. He was blaming himself."
"Maybe next time we play against them I will talk to my wife about putting some sausage for him, or something like that.”
The Spurs beat the Rockets 122-116 without having to deal with Delfino's 9.3 points per game and the next time the two teams play won't be until March in Houston.

Though I am sure it was purely an accident if Delfino's illness was to blame for the food served by Manu but perhaps it will behoove the Spurs and Ginobili to decline any dinner invitation from Delfino the night before the next Spurs-Rockets contest.

"So and so said he got bad sausage from one guy... so next time he gives him sausage, he's going to give him bad sausage as payback"... ugh too much sausage being swung around, hard to keep up.

Actually, I think this story is funny.  Carlos and Manu will be poking fun of each other over this for a long time to come.  These guys are sharing a little piece of themselves and their friendship with everyone and I like it.  I miss Carlos in Milwaukee this year.  Miss that smile from ear to ear during interviews, even if I couldn't understand a word he said.

how horrible;when so called sports writers have to come to such a  "low" subject matter to get paid.  Might just as easy to explain away as something he ate on the plane or at the hotel.  Enough other germs are going around he might of caught it that way also.  I know many of my family we are not around each other to share a meal yet have the same problem.

Oh and Delfino...I have gone out to eat and had the very same thing as everyone else and no one got sick but me.

By just reading the source (Delfino's comments) and the way this article is being presented, I have a very good notion that this writer is seeking selfish attention for the sake of having something interesting to read.  Bad move...this only initiates misinformation to the innocent fans of both great players.  Stop making up stories. True friends don't come up with such nonsense.

@train1 This is called "Argentine humor" and indeed Delfino did blame it on the food he'd had at Manu's. He was joking, of course but in his tweets in Spanish he said stuff like "What sort of food do they put on the table in San Antonio?", "The menu at the Ginobili mansion was undoubtedly not fit for my liver" and "Finally beginning to feel better after the potion the new Yiya Muranos gave me" (this one was @manuginobili and will only be understood by Argentines over 30. Yiya Murano was a lady who borrowed money from close friends whom she poisoned with home-made cookies when she visited them to allegedly return the money. It became a sort of a national joke and whenever someone had an upset stomach or felt unwell after lunch/dinner at a friend's they'd ask: "Did you want to poison me? Who are you, Yiya Murano?"

To reiterate my point, it's not what goes on between these two fine gentleman. I am simply stating that this writer is creating a second hand story from the Houston Chronical. It has no viable connection with the game of Basketball.  Report something that matter to the sports world, please.

@train1 Actually you said the writer should stop "making up stories" and that "true friends do not come up with such nonsense". And actually, the writer did not make up any story and NBA players are human beings who do and say fun stuff off the court. As a sportsaholic, I prefer to get to know players better rather than read long, boring game reports. Once a game is over, it's over and there is nothing you or I can do to change the result or improve a team's performance. That is the coach's business.

@PattiRafalskiDavison Thanks for your feedback, Patti. I just went googling to find out if there was any information about this woman in English and found out the episode of  "Killer women" (a tv show aired a couple of years ago) about her could be watched here. I assume it is in English but don't have the time to check it out now.  www.watchfreemovies.ch/watch-tv-shows/2005/watch-killer-women-26564/season-2/episode-1/

OMG, and you'd better watch it guys, I spent like half an hour to copy the address haha. why can't we copy and paste here?
