Video: Ex-Spur Avery Johnson is honored by alma mater SU

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

Former San Antonio Spurs guard Avery Johnson made a huge impact on the Spurs' franchise when he wore the Silver and Black. Without him, perhaps there wouldn't be an NBA title in 1999 for the franchise.

However, aside from that memorable shot in the 1999 NBA Finals versus the Knicks, Johnson became a fan-favorite and would end up having his jersey retired by the Spurs. Now, he has gone on to become a coach in the NBA and accomplished much, but  for AJ, it all began at Southern University where he honed his basketball skills.

Recently, SU honored Avery by naming the court after him and retired his jersey number 15. Truly an honor he deserves. Check out video from the ceremony including footage of his college playing days, his time with the Spurs, the game-winning shot in the 1999 NBA Finals, former SU teammates talking about him and much more. Also, who knew Johnson might have been gone on to be a baseball player?

I love Avery. I had a huge "Little General" Avery Johnson poster on my wall growing up, I wish I could find it again!
