Richards finds new home with BC Zepter Vienna

Written by Jose Grijalva on .

The last time we heard of Ryan Richards, his Polish experience with Asseco Prokom ended with both sides going their own way. That's nothing spursworld.wordpress.comnew with Richards as his professional career so far has been filled with controversy and disappointment. It seems Richards as found a new home with BC Zepter Vienna of the Austria League.

BC Zepter Vienna decided to sign the British big man Ryan Richards. The 21 year old seven footer last played in Poland for Asseco Prokom Gdynia . Richards was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in the second round of the 2010 NBA Draft. (via Interperformances.com)

For Spurs fans, this is good news that he's getting a new opportunity with a new team with how rocky his past has been so far. It's a fresh start despite the fact the Austrian League isn't a marquee league nor a competitive one.

It's not for certain how long this relationship will last or how it will end, but it may Richards' final shot especially if he wants to make it in the NBA.

With management in the league and a new collective bargaining agreement that's forcing teams to be frugal with their payroll, Richards needs to prove he won't be a liability or lost cause on a team before he's given a shot in the major leagues.

Richards certainly has the skills to make it into any league. With his seven foot frame, he's an asset that will always be considered as a possibility, but that doesn't necessarily mean teams will gamble on him.

If Richards can keep a solid reputation from now on, the San Antonio Spurs may be calling up their 2010 second round pick for something more than a summer league invite. He'll have plenty to prove, especially with the team signing Aron Baynes to a contract in a scheme where they're trying to win a title now and also keep a bright future in place.

Ryan Richards will have to look at the big picture from now on if he wants to make the jump.

His first game with the club he played 34 minutes, scoring 33 points (8-12 2 pointers, 4-9 3 pointers 5-7 freethrows) to go with 10 rebounds (4 offensive, 6 defensive) 1 assist 1 steal and 1 TO.  Weaker competition for sure but if he builds the confidence to get him back on track thats what matters to me.

He's not on a track to make it in the NBA, going from weak to weaker competitions.

I hope it works out for both side and ultimately the Spurs because I could him being a LaMarcus Aldrige/Garnett type player based on the video i've seen of him of course he'll need to be a Timmy understudy.

LaMarcus Aldrige and KG are two different type of players... that's a weird statement.

@russman138 I understand they're different players but when you look at how  explosive Ryan is on film it reminds me personally of a young KG, but in regards to LA he is so fundamentally sound that he draws timmy comparisons, and I could see that being the end result for Ryan if he puts in the needed work. Explosiveness=Young KG potential of=LA.
