Greatest power forward ever to play the game. Hands down. No one is playing better than him at the age 37. Amazing!!! Offense, defense, rebound, assist, leadership. He is a complete total package. Flawless in his game.
Duncan's domination of the Lakers and Grizzlies "twin towers" definitively answers that question. What a player! And we're not even talking about 2003 Timmy. Greatest big man of this decade, of this era? Yes, without question, but for all times, it's hard to say. I have to include Duncan among the group I consider to be the greatest bigs of all time (Jabbar, Hakeem, Wilt, and Bill Russell).
Please don't mention pretenders like Shaq and Dwight Howard who get by more on size than skill. Duncan was/is flat out better than Garnett, Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing, and the Admiral. I was deeply offended when folks started ranking guys like Dirk Nowitzski and Pau Gasol ahead of Duncan. There was that period where plantar fasciatis and recurring ankle and knee injuries seemed to rob Duncan of his ability to dominate.
Duncan NOT winning his 5th NBA title a couple of months back is the MOST DEVASTATING LOSS AND BITTER DISAPPOINTMENT of my ENTIRE sports fan career, including college and pro, including basketball, football, baseball, hockey, golf, tennis, boxing, soccer.
I am not allowed to mention the likes of Shaq and Dwight Howard when speaking of about the greatest big man of this era? You know Shaq was considered the 2nd greatest player in the 2000 era by Bleacher Report? And Dwight Howard is consistently considered as the greatest big in the game today?
I'm not saying I agree with those statements -- but why call me out for mentioning them while saying "Tim Duncan is harder to guard than (insert name here)", according to Tyson Chandler? I doesn't compare -- Shaq is not a great player but an individual force to be reckoned with.. same for Dwight.
Which is why I stand by my greatest big man of all time remark... Even if there are some (Russell/Chamberlain/Jabbar) who are perceived as more talented -- they didn't do it with the consistency of Duncan over the same length of time against the same type of players. We have much better defenders now that those players ever saw. You can point out somebody from their era and say "this is a good defender".. but not night in/night out.
Its the classic "then vs now" argument but....
Put Tim Duncan in Wilts shoes (era) and we would probably be debating whether or not Tim Duncan is the greatest player of all time.
@russman38Don't know if I really disagree with you. Hard for me to rank anyone ahead of Russell and Kareem. Russell only cared about winning and did EVERYTHING for his team to win. He dominated games without hogging the ball or taking 30 shots. The NBA has never known a greater leader than Russell.
Kareem is the NBA's all time leading scorer and was great player for a very long time. The sky hook is the greatest big man weapon of all time, and Kareem played great in big games as well. I rank Duncan as a better defender and rebounder,
Only thing is that Russell's and Kareem's teams were ABSOLUTELY loaded with hall of famers. Yeah, The Admiral was still a top player in 1999. Manu and Tony Parker are among the NBA's top tier, but we have NEVER had the talent that those old Celtic and Lakers had.
Now, your idea of putting Duncan in Wilt's place is very intriguing. I'd like to think that with Jerry West, Elgin Baylor and Gail Goodrich, Duncan could have gotten those Laker teams over the hump against Russell's Celtics more than just ONE TIME.
Duncan has been my favorite player, since he first hit the scene. I repeated laugh every year when the experts call some of the lottery picks "franchise players". Tim Duncan is the true definition of franchise player; your team starts winning 50 games and never stops....
"Do Spurs fans think Duncan is still the best big man in the game today?"
When they asked Tyson Chandler about the hardest person he's had to guard ever.. he said TIM DUNCAN. Not Shaq/Dwight Howard/Yao Ming/Amare Stoudemire/Kevin Garnett/Chris Webber..
Greatest big man to ever play the game. Not the most athletic or maybe even talented.. but definitely the most sound and all around GREATEST player when it comes to big men.
Also top ten all time IMO
Gonna miss him when he's gone.. he is a one of a kind that we will never be blessed with again.
tim is gonna have a great season in 2013-2014 because he is still motivated to win another ring. we are still on a mission.
it was awesome watching this video, thank you. i miss watching the games, i did not miss one single minute of any game last season
