The San Antonio Spurs haven't had a dream season so far and the nightmare has gotten worse for its fans.
The team has released Stephen Jackson.
San Antonio has waived Stephen Jackson, league source tells Y! Sports.
Source on Spurs release of Stephen Jackson: "It's been brewing for a few days."
Gregg Popovich and Stephen Jackson have been sparring over Jax's role throughout season; disagreements resurfaced this week, source tells Y!
Spurs and Jackson discussed a release prior to trade deadline, but sides agreed to go forward together for rest of season, source says. (Adrian Wojnarowski)
This has to come as a huge surprise as the team and Jackson seemed to be on the same page, at least in public. Jackson and the Spurs seemed to keep a professional relationship in front of the cameras, especially during a tough stretch of Jackson's life this season where the team seemed to give him time to spend with his family during a tragedy.
Jackson's release is going to be a huge blow going forward into the postseason where the team is dealing with injuries to two of his top stars (Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili). It was also announced today that Boris Diaw would be out for 3-4 weeks due to surgery.
Losing Jackson also means that "toughness" factor is gone. Sure he may not have been putting up the points on the court but the fire was there when he was on the court. Now, who will be physical with the likes of Kevin Durant, LeBron James, etc.?
With the Spurs' bench spread thin now (Manu Ginobili out with injury, Boris Diaw out of action for 3-4 weeks due to back surgery) one has to think the Spurs may be looking at the waiver wire to find some much-needed help.
This move will certainly have an effect on the Spurs' championship hopes come the postseason.
What do you Spurs fans think about the situation?
I think it is a shame that with Duncan playing like he is now and at a super level we cannot get him consistent and quality help. I love the Spurs and always will but cutting Jackson when we need his tenacity and clutch shooting at this time of season was a bad call. Diaw, Manu, and Tony are hurt we just do not have the the group we need to get to the conference finals again this year or beyond for that matter. To me it seems the Spurs are moving toward a rebuilding stage. Our bigs are less than spectacular. I am also not too sure what Pop is thinking anymore.
You kidding me? The Spurs are shutting their own door to success. Manu should not resign and play else where because this team is not gonna win championship in TP era again.
Either the Spurs FO has thrown in he ttowel are they have someone in mind. They should go get Curry who they had in training camp at the begining of the year. I know Curry signed to play in China but maybe the Chinese seaon is over. I hate to llose Jackson he was such a clutch player in big game but I always question his charater. I just hope he does not sign with playoff bound team in the west.
SJax is good but not enought to stop SA from winning a title. I'm gonna miss him. But he might have said something that made the office press the button. Not just playing time. Blair has been complaining for the same thing but never got a release.
So with this bit of news and the injury bug hitting the SAS, is it time to face the obvious that this team isn't winning a title this season?
Great now we can use Bonner for defensive purpose since Coach POP likes him so much. This really blows its so hard to defend great players and to release a good defender with toughness is ridiculous.
ok we all like Captain Jack cause of who he is, but to be honest, he has played very poorly all season long. There's no reason why we should even pay a guy 10mil who's not even in our top 10 most used line up. We'll be just fine!
Looking back on it, maybe the mild ankle sprain and DNPs was Jackson's respond to all this disagreements with FO.
His toughness is far-outweighed by his desire to ruffle feathers including Pop's ! His minutes were significant and it is an unfortunate time for all this with all the injuries. This is war-time, so no excuses !! Let's sign some veteran and Jamichael Green from the Toros since Diaw is out also. No problem! Let's truck on! We are on a mission ! If anyone is not onboard. See ya ! We have just begun to fight !! Suck it up and let's..... GO SPURS !!!!!!!
The waiver if Jackon is ok. He didn't fit into the system. The Spurs, right nw, are not a playoff/champion team. En the season and rebuild.
If Jackson was really that mad about his role, why couldn't he have said he wanted a release earlier? The Spurs could have at least added somebody else before the March deadline. Sad that it had to end this way for Captain Jack.
A huge blow for our toughness factor and depth at defending the likes of Durant and James. tsk tsk tsk!
@WOWWOWBAD Manu shouldn't resign cause he is done, your crazy we are a center away from being legit, Jackson is great for what we got but he is also done. He couldn't even get playing time on the Bucks...This season is not were we want it to be but this is a team that still has the 3 best record in the NBA we are not in the lottery. We have 25 mill free this year and will bring in a quality big...Manu and Jackson are not even relevant as we make it out to be, big loss yes i agree but only cause of what we have at that position as a back up... but positive changes will come.....
@UsernameAlvin Yes, from my understanding, we can still sign free agents who weren't waived and they would still be eligible to play in the playoffs.
@JeffProjectSpurs Im always a realist on this site and sometimes makes me look like a spurs hater. I love my spurs, but some move have been too questionable lately. I just hate to see us not get a quality big at the deadline and splitter, Bonner and Diaw are not even close a quality big. We gave up too much to get rid of Jefferson to get a player we waived but couldnt or choose not to make a move this year. I hope we are going to make a huge splash during free agency and lock up an athletic big. It would be a shame to have Duncan play at this level next season and the front office only keeps this front court.
Are we winning a Title not this year, and thats a Shame with Duncan playing at this level. That draft and stash is getting old we have Duncans window closing fast but our gaurds and small forward can compete with the best of them, Duncan is still a force, Bench Deep...ray Charles can see that we need a big athletic quality center...
@JeffProjectSpurs I won't say it, but it is obviously in the back of my mind now. It sucks. However, I'm not turning my back on this team.
@LiveSpurs no kidding then put splitter and his laughable defense in after that
@Spursforever69 I'm still saddened though.
@DavidMasters1 Well, they certainly are a playoff team. As far as being a champion team, the Spurs are among the top 5 in the NBA, so I think they are a championship contender as well.
@Emicris Maybe the FO has a contingency plan for that. OR NOT!!! This really BLOWS.
