Report: Spurs Working Out Jason Kapono

Written by Trevor Zickgraf on .

I hope you're sitting down for this, because Yahoo!'s Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that the San Antonio Spurs have been working out former 3-Point Shooting champ Jason Kapono.

Free agent Jason Kapono has been working out with the San Antonio Spurs this week, league sources tell Y! Sports."

Kapono was last seen riding the Lakers' bench a year ago.  He appeared in 27 games and shot 30 percent from 3, you know, the thing he's known for.  Good news though, he made all four of his free throws last season.  If anything, this is probably a work out for a training camp invite.  It just seems odd that the one thing Kapono does well, shoot 3's, is the one area the Spurs don't need any help in.

I'm going to try and not read too much in to this otherwise my head might explode.

@jhhein There was a rumor that Spurs would get Patrick Patterson in a trade that sent out Neal/Blair and/or Bonner in 3 team trade

@Spursfan66 @jhhein yeah that Patterson trade looks like its dead in the water if it was ever afloat at all. I still think there has to be a trade somewhere because patfo has to know we are gonna be stuck playing small ball against the bigger teams...

@jhhein Its a few weeks old now and nothing new..Doubtful anything will happen b4 camp, if then. But Houston cant head into season with 10+ "bigs" I'm not so sure Jazz will move bigs or even if they have too many.. I only really see 4 PF/Cs and one is milsap at 6'8"..but there has been talk that Jazz should think about trading him before his deal is up.

Does anybody have any idea who the spurs might be after?

@jhhein I'm starting to wonder about Spurs waiting to see what Magic are going to do with Ayon. They were interested in him before he came to NBA, and now, if I'm not mistaken, since Magic just signed E Moore, they now have 17 under contract, 15 guaranteed, with Ayon one of the 2 players not guaranteed, I'm wondering if Magic would be more likely to waive a guaranteed player or let Ayon walk, or try to trade him. They obviously have chosen to tank for at least a couple years and try to build a'la OKC, so maybe a pick or two could get the Spurs Ayon. Personally, I would like GA over a blatche any day. I think he could fit nicely.

@jhhein Ya, Magic do have 17 now and FIVE PFs and 3 post players.  http://www.nba.com/magic/news/denton-magic-add-backcourt-depth-sign-moore_090612

There is also a rumor by a poster on orlando sentinel of a JJ/Ayon trade to SA involving Neal  http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2012-09-01/sports/os-magic-brian-schmitz-sunday-0902-20120901_1_nikola-vucevic-justin-harper-ish-smith (although I have no idea how JJ could be involved given he's got 1 yr 6+ mil owed unless one or two other players were involved, and then it doesnt make sense if Orlando would actually still have too many guaranteed contracts) But given that Ayon is only 1.5 mil per for 2 yrs, I think we could swing that and still be under lux tax with Neal's $ gone. And as seen here Ayon is non guaranteed this yr with team option next.  http://www.hoopsworld.com/orlando-magic-team-salary  But looking at that link, I see Ayon as the ONLY Non guaranteed there now (although Moore isn't listed there yet which would bring a total of 17 players, and all I've heard is he's PARTIALLY guaranteed @ 2 years) It's interesting anyways, especially considering Magic have 2 ex spurs staff (Jacque, Henningan) and that makes me think they may be more open to dealing with SA. That's why I actually like the fact that so many teams have poached Spurs staff..teams like Jazz, Hawks, Magic etc may now be actually more likely to be open to moves with SA.

Any thoughts?

@jhhein It definitely couldnt hurt..and the price is definitely right. I cant think of a single other NBA big that is possibly gettable at his price. And magic have said pretty much straight out that they will listen to any offers on almost anyone they have. I wouldnt mind Harrington or even Mc Roberts either frankly, but they obviously would come at a higher price.

@jhhein Thanks..well imo I dont think an athletic big can be had unless we trade jax or TP since athletic bigs go for big $. MAYBE a euro project type is out there, but a project cant really help us now. That said, Ayon is 4" taller than Blair, a good defender, actually can hit the jumper, solid passer, will bang, gets 3x the blocks, shoots better % more assts and steals and half the TOs than Blair and about the same rebounds. But you have to remember Ayon has had only 1 yr in the NBA compared to DJB's 3 to post those #s. And we would have an extra year with Ayon at same $ as DJB makes now. I actually think Ayon would be a better fit and much more likely to help in the POs. Check out the stuffs he got on Favors and La Marcus Aldridge..Blair doesn't even come close to bringing that.

The Spurs are SO INTERESTED IN unathletic spot-shooters.

If the Spurs do sign him, it will only be for a year or two on a small contract. And it might very well signal a trade especially if the Spurs are looking to offload Bonner and possibly, Joseph and Neal as well. Either way it feels like something interesting is brewing within the Spurs.

I included CJ because he will be the 3 or 4 spot point guard if you discount using Neal at pg. I think if the Spurs could get a 3-4 team deal going, using Bonner, Blair, Neal, Joseph in the trade then maybe we could get a couple serviceable bigs in the process. It makes a possible Kapono signing have a little more sense.

@OzSpur Why would they unload Joseph? We literally just drafted him a year ago...

Spursfan66

@russman138  @OzSpur I doubt Spurs are shopping CJ, but since he had a good SL and Dleague, teams will have noticed and possibly inquire about him. Spurs are in win now mode so if CJ + can bring in someone to fill a need, they would consider it.

@Spursfan66  @OzSpur Yeah, me thinks the trade winds are a brewin'. We have plenty of 3 point depth, so why look for someone else with the same traits? I have to think that they are looking at moving some of their 3 point shooters (maybe Neal?). I really can't wait for the season to start already...

Yeah, I won't read too much into it either. For some reason if he does make the roster, I will sense that a trade is in the works.

If this news is true then there is something majorly wrong with PATFO. They are too much after 6'8" guys and guards. They should go after a backup big and I can see a trade happening (hopeful)
