Report: Spurs, Derrick Brown agree to non-guaranteed deal

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

The San Antonio Spurs have signed forward Derrick Brown (via CSNNW.com) to a non-guaranteed deal, training camp invite according to his agent Calvin Andrews.

Brown averaged 8.1 points, 3.6 rebounds in 22.2 minutes with the Charlotte Bobcats last season. His best season statistically in his pro-career.

With the Spurs needing size to contend with the bigger teams in the West, Brown may not be what the team needs. Brown is 6-7, 225 lbs. and although he may be athletic and have a motor, San Antonio does have Kawhi Leonard and DeJuan Blair so Brown might be buried on the bench.

Here is what Project Spurs' Trevor Zickgraf had to say about Brown.

Brown has also shown some offensive versatility and has a couple of skills that would fit well in the Spurs system.  According to NBA Advanced Stats, Brown shot 66 percent in the restricted area, which is incredibly good when you consider Brown's size.  He also shot 40 percent from mid-range which is good for the floor spacing.  Another interesting note: Brown shot 30 percent from the corner three (granted he only took 20 attempts).

Overall, this signing is just training camp roster filling but if Brown shows he can consistently knock down his outside shots while heading to the rim, he may just make the team's final roster.

What do you have to say Spurs fans? Think Brown should stick on the team?

I just thought about it, now we have Green and Brown. Not only are we an international club, we are becoming a crayon box too!

ok i'm not getting all the Jackson out of here talk. it's not like he's done, anymore than gino. tim are done. He does not have to even play 25 min for us with Lenord/ Green playing in front of him. As good as the young guys do well in the season; Jackson is the one checking somsome like Durant at playoff time at the end of the day. So what if he raps, he's a person like me and you and dispite what people think don't awake and sleep in the gym.

@mfxmachine It's simple and has NOTHING to do with rap (no idea where that came from) Jax has a HUGE expiring contract (and he's not worth but a fraction of it as a player), of 10+ mil and that can help a team looking to shed salary. (to possibly get under tax this year or get cap room for FA next year.) Think of it this way, we could have Andy Verajao AND Omri Casspi for Jax alone...or Josh Smith for Jax and Matt. Jax is a nice player for Spurs, but not 10 mil nice.

"IF" this guy makes it through training camp and finds his way on to the roster and proves himself during the first part of the season, then in may be forseeable that he may pave the way for Jax to be traded around the deadline. A package of Jax/Blair and or Bonner may net the Spurs a good solid big that they are needing. Otherwise if they don't, it shows how hard it is to truly find a good dependable and productive big.

I'm pretty cool with this signing. We weren't going to get a decent big in free agency after passing on blatche. We're going to have to do it via trade or maybe next year if we have a lil cap space left if we are going to get one at all. Brown could be promising!

Were really stacked at that position, but I think it might be worth to see what he can do in training camp! I have a feeling Spurs might have something up their sleeves, probably  involving jackson or blair! I truly think spurs are good at all positions except a solid center! I would try to see what we can get for bonner, blair, and jackson or any combination of these players for a solid center! Just my thoughts....

I might add neal on the trading block too? so neal, blair, bonner, and jack are the expendables!

@SONofSAN Jax contract is surely a great trade asset, but I sure want him on the team in playoff crunch time! That Mario Elie/Robert Horry nasty is hard to find nowadays.

@spursfan80  @SONofSAN  @imwithstupidI wouldn't be at all upset if Spurs actually did target every one of those guys and about 15 others as well..lol No harm in tryin'..

And NOH OKC and I guess BOS (doc)..(athough doc is a notoriously greedy trade negotiator)

Spursfan66

@spursfan80  @SONofSAN  @imwithstupid lol ya..I was just using them as examples that make between 11 and 13 or 14 mil (which equals salaries of spurs I listed). Many of those guys are practically untouchable.

But ya, a trade with Danny in ATL is definitely a possibility. They are obviously looking to get cap room enough to vie for Howard this summer (or one of several other FA studs available then)..I think J Smith would be the one more likely to go though because his deal is expiring and I doubt Danny F expects he will re sign in ATL.

This is one reason why I actually like so many ex spurs staff are being poached by NBA teams..more and more teams that will be more likely to do deals with Spurs...

@Spursfan66  @SONofSAN  @imwithstupid Like I said I think if we can get a good big guy I'm down for trading Jackson, otherwise he might be worth more as a keeper. But I don't think we'll get Hibbert or Ibaka as much as I would love them on the team since they just inked big contracts, so why would OKC or Indy trade either? Hoford could be a plausible pickup, as they may want the cap room for signings as they seem to be reworking their roster.

@SONofSAN  @imwithstupid ya, the 11-13 mil big we could get from jax + Blair or Bonner Or Neal could EASILY end up being WAY more impactful than us having kept them and not went for a big. Think Horford, J Smith,T Chandler, Bargnani, Noah, Hump, Verejao, Granger, West, Hibbert, Nene, McGee, Ibaka, Bogut,  D Jordan, Gortat (is only 7.5 mil), etc..(And I didnt even mention any young ones on smaller rookie deals)

@imwithstupid yea, I like what he brings and I really don't want him to go, but  I'm thinking about the business side and what we truly need (a decent solid big)

pops thinking about defense with this pick because this guy is a super athlete who could guard multiple positions and that that means he could be another guy we can throw at durant and lebron if we mee them in the playoffs, I personally like this guy, and for all those spurs fans crying for big guy we can't get one because there's no one out there they're either to stupid or can't play ay defense.

CraigThomas

So is this guy another SF/PF tweener? If so, does anyone know if he can guard 3's and 4's effectively? If this guy shows potential, I believe it will be the deathknell of Blairball. He is obviously more athletic, versatile, and with any luck more mature than DeJuan. Hopefully that means some sort of trade involving Blair and others.

I'm wondering what exactly the FO has in mind working out and now signing a SF/PF tweener? Unfortunately, I believe it has to be in anticipation of a Stephen Jackson trade. Why else would they be so intent on working out all of these SF's when we are already more than solid at SF position? I love what SJax brought to the team last year, but if we can flip him for a solid big man, we gotta do it. Kawhi is coming into his own, and $10 mil backup SF are a luxury we cannot afford. I just pray we get a great deal per usual.

I'm excited to see the athleticism Brown brings to the table. He looks a lot like Durant from what I've seen actually (without the amazing shooting obviously). Could be another diamond in the rough? Let's hope.

@CraigThomas Looks like he has always played the 3, but is said to be able to D 2s- some 4s. Might be a sign of jax trade, or might just be insurance at the 3/D "specialist". Agree that if jax could get us a good big, gotta do it..but I think thats not likely to happen until close to deadline.

CraigThomas
CraigThomas like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@Spursfan66 You're probably right. I just wish we could have some more team chemistry and make the trade pre-season b/c a SJax trade would entail a new starting center or power forward. I just don't think our FO would needlessly emphasize getting a 3rd string SF who is NBA proven when we already have basically 2 SF who can start on almost any team's small forward position.

@CraigThomas  @dannyholloway  @nish21  @Spursfan66 Well said, I would go as far as to say he was the best rim defender/board crasher left available. Once TD leaves the game we got nothing but sparkles, now that is a truly sad state of affairs.

@dannyholloway  @imwithstupid  @nish21  @Spursfan66 I think it speaks to the desperation Spurs fans are in right now. Literally anyone above 6'11" who can play defense and rebound is wanted. So long were the days of wanting Kaman and Scola and now it's just anyone with a body that we can throw at Dwight come playoff time. Timmy needs help! Darko is a body which fills up the lane and not to mention he isn't too shabby defensively. As illustrated last year, it's definitely not our offense which needs help. WE NEED RIM DEFENDERS.

@imwithstupid  @nish21  @Spursfan66  @CraigThomas No offense, but Darko? You would have loved to have Darko?

If the hopes of Timmy getting his 5th ring rest on the signing of Darko Milicic, it's a sad state of affairs in NBA land.

Darko Milicic. The signing of the summer. Like I said tho. No offense :) lol

@nish21  @Spursfan66  @CraigThomas Yeah, the De Colo signing would have been much better next year after we loose a couple of smalls, but with Euro contracts sometimes it's now or never. But we are actually closer to being 3 deep at every position, just a little guard heavy. It just feels like we are only one trade away from being serious championship contenders again. I would have loved Darko... If we wait all the way til the deadline I will have a stroke...

@Spursfan66  @CraigThomas Jax is over this season. Don't know how mush is he focused  this season as he is out to promote his rap album. I hope he is traded for a decent big. Spurs could also had a look at D J White, someone who fills our need. I still do not understand why was DeColo signed even for cheap. He doesn't justifies his BB IQ at 25, must have been signed to please Tony Parker. How are they planning to give Duncan some night offs? What will be the lineup (in case of injury to TD or TS)? Anyways none of these signings are going to get TD his 5th ring.

Spursfan66
Spursfan66 like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@CraigThomas Deal is, no team is likely to be trading for jax as a "player"..much more likely to want his big expiring deal. And its probably smarter for those teams looking for expirings to wait until the deadline.

And honestly, I get the feeling that FO isnt confident Jax can play extended mins in a full season and still have much left in the playoffs. They also might be thinking they will have to play more small ball than they have in the past. Most likely imo is that FO thought he was the guy available most likely to make a difference. The bigs out there that could be had at what we have to pay are not exactly enticing, and Im pretty sure TS will be playing good mins this year.

I almost wish the Spurs weren't so good at finding diamonds in the rough, and finding guys just as their skills come together. It makes us Spurs fans think everyone they invite to camp could be a future DGreen or GNeal. Now I watch these camp and workout invites, and I know they are just camp invites, but I get sucked in anyway! I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football....

@Spursfan66 Right, but since they are so good at finding that player that every single guy (established or not), they workout could be the next big thing. The bloggers go crazy and I drink the juice every time. Brown, Aguilar, Fresenko, Kapono, R Terry, Butch, W Carter, T Wilkerson (Tmac too i think), just in the last couple of weeks, and I know they are just workouts but I still believe and go running up to that football every time (ok, not with Kapono). I am starting to feel like a crackhead and CIA Pop is my dealer, but he is not answering my calls....

By the way Darko Milicic is headed to Boston. So that is good management as they addressed a need.

I like this signing too. But if he is signed for the next season then spurs need to send Jackson or Blair and get a big. We cannot have all PFs 6'8". If he is better at PF then Blair must be released since it is right now impossible to trade him and if he plays SF better then Jackson must be traded. A player should be given a contract if he fills a need and not to fill in a roster spot. He is neither a very good rebounder nor a blocker. So not too happy. And what happened to Kyrylo Fesenko?

according to his agent, the Spurs really like him, and if you looked at the bottom of the page at CSNNW.com, they mentioned that Brown has a good shot to make it past training camp, according to sources. i think the guy's got potential. even though he doesn't have enough size, as you mentioned, he is athletic and looking at the league right now, with LeBron, Durant, and other young, athletic guys coming in, this could just become an athletic league. size might still matter, but not as much as we think. look at the defending champ Heat. granted, they have LeBron, Wade, and Bosh, but they didn't have much size, and they still kinda don't. would i still like another big man? of course i would, and there's still time between now and the trade deadline to find a big, but right now, i think this is a decent signing, and if Brown shows improvement during camp, that'll be great.

@Spursfan66  @RG8907 Thank you for the youtube links! Of course its hard to tell from a few videos, but he seems to have a good knack for moving without the basketball on offense, knocking down midrangers, and finishing hard at the rim. Who knows how good this guy could become with a few minutes, and I feel like the opportunity to play for a title contender might even stoke this dude's inner drive a little more. I'd be cool with this guy potentially.

Also as much as I love Stephen Jackson, it sounds like having this guy around might put us in a good position if an opportunity to trade for another big has to or should be made. And of course, that trade would likely involve CaptainJack/(insert:Neal, Bonner, Blair)
