Chalmers thinks he’s a Top-10 point guard like Parker, Rondo and others

Written by Paul Garcia on .

Don’t you just love it when a multimillion dollar athlete let’s a lot of hype get to his head and he says things that aren’t necessarily true? Well, that is the case with Miami Heat point guard Mario Chalmers.

In a recent article, Chalmers went on record to say that he’s definitely a Top-10 point guard in the NBA and he doesn’t think that Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo is the best point guard in the NBA.

I agree with Chalmers’ assessment of Rondo, however, I’m not so sure I believe him when he says he’s a Top-10 NBA point guard.

When I think of NBA point guards, first I think of the standouts. That’s usually Chicago Bulls’ Derrick Rose, Los Angeles Clippers Chris Paul, Brooklyn Nets’ Deron Williams, San Antonio Spurs’ Tony Parker, Rondo, Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook, Los Angeles Lakers Steve Nash, Washington Wizards John Wall, Cleveland Cavaliers Kyrie Irving, Minnesota Timberwolves’ Ricky Rubio, Memphis Grizzlies’ Mike Conley,  and even Milwaukee Bucks’ Brandon Jennings.

There are still guys out there like Sacramento Kings’ Tyreke Evans and Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry.

All in all, Chalmers might crack the Top-20 list, but there’s no way right now in this stage of his career that he’s a Top-10 point guard. Yes he may have just won a ring with the Heat, but if you watch the fourth quarter or most quarters in their games, LeBron James or Dwayne Wade are usually the two players dribbling the ball down the court, not Chalmers.

Maybe Chalmers has a huge season coming up in October, but for now he’ll still be known as a role player to the “Big three” of the Heat.

Rondo has never lead a team to the title, paul pierce kg and ray allen have, rondo wasn't near the player that he is now back in 2008, right now rondo is th best player on the celtics and he hasn't led his team to the championship since pierce did it in 2008, so with that said d-will can do everything rondo can do, but he has a jumpshot.

Rondo is one of my favorites, but I have to go with d-will, now he can pass, rebound, play d, post up, and definitely shoot better than any point gaurd in the nba, aside from steve nash or maybe stephon curry, nah he shoots better than curry

@JMattHicks I understand where you are coming from. Rondo CAN do it all...but in spurts. That ECF game (game 2 i think?) where he WENT OFF is a perfect example of his upside. But he's SOOOO inconsistent with his shooting. Sometimes he's straight up a liability, in terms of jump shooting. Now, he has amazing passing instincts to make up for it, but I'd still take D-Will over anyone else. He didn't have a healthy Brooke Lopez last year (his first full year in NJ) and hasn't had a good cast of players around him in a very long time. I think next year could be the year D-Will reminds everyone just how good he is. W/O, him, I can't even see how NJ would have won games last year.

@JMattHicks I wouldn't disagree with you about building around him as a PG. Not in the least. But I also think it's a little silly to just declare him the best PG in the NBA, hands down.

I understand the stats you threw out there. But lets not forget that he's also been dropping dimes to THREE FUTURE HALL-OF-FAMERS. KG is one of the best PF of all time and Ray Allen may just be the best pure shooter in NBA history. Meanwhile, D-Will has avged almost 10, 13 and 9 ast per game the last 3 seasons with players that wouldn't even make an all-star team. Let's not count D-Will out of the discussion completely. That's a total slight if you do that.

I guess if you score 25 points in one game of the finals that automatically makes you a top 10 player at your position... Mario Chalmers needs to learn a lesson in humility, let others say this about you first before you go out to the public and say it. Oh and by the way I think Rondo would probably already circle the dates he plays against the heat but now its almost a guarantee he's gonna come out for blood now that Chalmers thinks so "highly" of Rondo.
