Spurs waive Brown, Curry

The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have waived forward Derrick Brown and center Eddy Curry.

Brown was signed by the Spurs on Sept. 27.  He appeared in five preseason games, averaging 6.6 points and 1.0 assist in 15.4 minutes.

Curry joined the Spurs on Oct.1 and saw action in five preseason games, averaging 8.4 points and 3.6 rebounds in 15.4 minutes.

Previously it was reported that the battle for the 15th roster spot was between Brown and Curry, but now only Josh Powell and Wesley Witherspoon remain out of the camp hopefuls.

Most Spurs fans expected Curry to make the roster considering the Spurs could use some size on the front line and he showed up to camp in great shape. Theres still an outside chance Witherspoon or Powell could make it with Powell looking like the frontrunner, but Spurs coach Gregg Popovich could elect to not fill the 15th roster spot like he's done in previous seasons in a cost-cutting move.

Witherspoon had one standout 17-point performance against Houston, but he is looking more like he could be an outstanding pickup for the Austin Toros over being a third small forward for the Spurs.

Powell has averaged seven points and 4.2 rebounds in three preseason games and was given the most playing time he's seen against   Orlando.

Curry will likely find a spot on a roster pretty quickly with reports earlier in camp that other teams were interested.

I knew it. The FO can't really get rid of bonner and use amnesty of him I wonder why. -_-

@SPURSALLDAY Amnesty deadline passed long ago for this season, and FO STILL possibly could trade him this year..or just waive him after the season and only owe him the 1 mil he has guaranteed then..Amnesty would be COMPLETELY wasted on a smallish contract guy that is essentially expiring anyway

I think it is now safe to conclude (assume) that the Spurs will not fill the 15h slot. Practically, they are opting to play the same line-up. Or, are they still hoping to trade Bonner and Blair? Or, is the coaching staff hoping that someone will be waived whom they like to have? Whatever, good luck. See you next year Spurs!

Wow. Pop and RC hit the Spurs die-hard fans with a punch straight to the gut! Not entirely unexpected because that's their MO. The fact that we could have had 2 proven offensive big-men looking for a 2nd shot (Curry or Blatche), but chose to decline speaks volumes to what the FO believes we need. I will put down money that we are going to stay with Witherspoon instead of trashing all of the pre-season hopefuls. That would mean that all of the summer reports about looking at SF's were true. The FO is completely determined to trade Stephen Jackson's expiring contract and others (please Bonner) for a big around the trade deadline. I guess we will have to wait until that time or come playoff time to see how this decision panned out. As always, us Spurs fans must remain patient with the brain trust. Let's just hope this move wasn't a brain dead one...

@CraigThomas where i think the fault is in this, the spurs do not need an offensive big. they need defense over anything, and neither of these guys can offer that. currys defense and rebounding numbers are now and always have been terrible. so while its true you cant teach size, you also cant teach a dog to guard the yard if he doesnt have any teeth.

This frustrates me solely because I like Brown in almost every way compared to Powell.

Wow, I did not see that coming. I honestly thought one of them was going to get that last spot. Maybe the front office really sees something in either Powell or Witherspoon OR there is a waived player out there somewhere that the spurs might want to add. At least we got rid of the unnecessaries. Derrick Brown was good, but we have Leonard and Jackson. As talented as Curry is on offense, he is a no show on defense, and that would come back and bite him in the ass. I'm kind of relieved now, to be honest.

Like JA, I'm not surprised... Curry is just not made of Spur DNA, we already have Brown's 6'8" talents, and we can't settle on the best of the scrubs. Many guys are being released throughout the league that could have potential, as well as FAs. I'm glad we aren't being like the Mavs and wasting our Best's (TD/Manu) best years on half-measures and stop-gaps. Lets keep our core chemistry tight and only add someone if they fit like a glove (not OJ's).

Not surprised at all, I said it before, curry wasn't a fit, he doesn't rebound, or defend. He just liked offense and the offense he provided takes away from the offense we already had. Looks to me like Powell is the guy.

I'm actually pretty surprised by this, but if Pop and the front office decide to keep the 15th spot open, I won't be opposed to this because there will be teams who waive players throughout the season that the Spurs could go after.

@Emicris I have a strange feeling that they are keeping Witherspoon. Why would he not be waived as well if our sole purpose were to find a serviceable big this off-season? All of it points to SJax being trade bait unfortunately.

@CraigThomas You make a valid point. I saw a few people write the same thing on Pounding The Rock. We'll have to wait and see.
