So his comments during ESPN’s Monday Night Football game between the St Louis Rams and the Seattle Seahawks, the “Round Mound of Rebound” gave a halftime interview shouldn’t come as a big surprise. When the topic of the upcoming 2013-2014 NBA season came up, he had this to say about the silver and black.
Via Biz Journals:
“Barkley made it clear during his halftime interview that, in his not-so-humble opinion, the Lakers won’t make the playoffs and the Spurs are, at best, a middle-of-the-pack team in their own conference”.
It appears that Sir Charles believes the Los Angeles Clippers, Oklahoma City Thunder, the Golden State Warriors and the Houston Rockets are ahead of the Spurs in the Western Conference pecking order. Barkley went on to state that he expects the Clippers to be playing in the NBA Finals.
With a healthy Russell Westbrook, a case for the Thunder being placed ahead of the Spurs can be made, the Clippers and Rockets are at best equal footing in the Western Conference. Anything beyond that is laughable.
The Spurs being looked over by members of the media is nothing new. These are the same folks that have been calling the team plain boring at the beginning and during the season for the past six years or so.
Along with the bad taste of last June still lingering in their collective mouths, the Spurs will respond in the usual way by playing fundamental team basketball and grind out the wins. Then at the end of the regular season, they will end up making serious noise in the playoffs and the Finals.
So Spurs’ fans, how do you think of Sir Charles evaluation of your San Antonio Spurs?
The Rockets? Maybe. The Clippers? With BLAKE GRIFFIN? not so much. The Spurs will probably finish 1st or 2nd in the West, and fail again at the Final. They just cannot win with TP is the guy leading the team.
its spurs and warriors and thunder. Clips a ways behind that first group. Injuries always determine these things, but spurs have to be favorite. Oh, and Rockets are lucky to get 6th seed.
I am so sick of hearing about the Clippers. The players are still the same players. What has the great Chris Paul done other than get past the first round? Rivers is not going to turn Griffen into Garnett and Reddick is not becoming Allen. They are who we thought they where. I wish I knew Barkley I would definitely enjoy taking his money.
Sir Charles should be surprised then when playoff time arrives as he thinks the Spurs will be in middle. once again, he is a dummy.
actually he's delusional to say that Spurs are behind those four teams yet he also says Tony Parker is the best PG and Popovich is the best coach in the league today.
It's just Charles being Charles, but "middle of the road" team is way off. Barring a couple of major injuries, the Spurs will be among the league's elite again. I'm just not sure why the pundits continue to undervalue how good the Spurs team is.
The teams touted as the next big thing (e.g. Thunder, Clippers, Warriors, Rockets) all have significant flaws. Thunder have no depth and are too dependent on Durant and Westbrook. Clippers have no heart or size. Warriors lack size and can't win a title as a jump shooting team. Rockets will not win a title with Dwight Howard as its lead. Of all of these teams, only Rockets really got better on paper. Doc is an upgrade over Vinny, but the Clippers don't scare in a 7-game series. Everybody else exchanged some pieces but are basically the same core teams with the exact same flaws.
By the way, the Spurs match up better with the Heat than all of the above opponents. Run and gun small ball and hero ball are EXACTLY what the Heat wants, and that's what these teams excel at. Thunder, Clippers, and Warriors are built to lose against the Heat. Rockets should be a good match up, cuz they now feature some size and scoring. I just think the Spurs are a more complete basketball team than the others, minus the hype.
he says idiotic things, and that leaves us wondering why we often think of him as one of the better commentators. of course the answer to that is simple: he's far superior compared to idiots like shaq, magic, jalen rose and bill simmons, but still...
i think he's just going to say the same thing every year until his prediction ultimately comes true, then he'll praise himself as a genious even if he was wrong the previous ten times.
