Could Spurs be interested in Varejao on trade block

Written by Michael A. De Leon on .

Anderson VarejaoTake one look at the comments section on recent posts on Project Spurs, specifically the one about the San Antonio Spurs possibly calling up James Anderson and you'll find an ongoing meme.

Spurs fans want some size at either the power forward or center position.

It seemed like a bad joke when Spurs coach Gregg Popovich mentioned Cory Joseph rejoining the team with Stephen Jackson joining Kawhi Leonard on the Spurs' injured ranks. Spurs fans feel the team already has enough six foot nothing guards so it seemed like the return of small ball until the news that Anderson could be called up and the Spurs' interest in yet another Frenchman, Mickael Pietrus.

But for those Spurs fans looking for another big to join the team, and I'm not talking about Eddy Curry here, there are a few players on the trade block, according to HoopsWorld.

Apparently, regardless of the fact that Anderson Varejao is having a great season, averaging 14 points and 13 rebounds per game, the Cleveland Cavaliers are still looking at moving the Brazilian big man.

The Cavaliers feel rookie Tyler Zeller can take over at center, but bad news for Spurs fans, the Cavaliers are looking for some value in return for Varejao, especially in the variety of younger players on rookie contracts. It also seems like Luke Walton would have to be a part of any trade for him.

League sources said bluntly, that anything involving Varejao is also going to have to move out Luke Walton and his $6 million ending contract and return youth and draft picks.

But fret not, Spurs fans. Another player both Trevor Zickgraf and I are high on could also be available as the trade deadline gets closer.

The Bobcats would love to move Tyrus Thomas and, believe it or not, there were some teams around the draft that at least considered it as part of a bigger deal, mainly because the Cats were dangling the draft pick that became Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

Thomas has put up pedestrian numbers in a reserve role for the Bobcats this season, but you can't teach athleticism or height and Thomas has both of those. Thomas' current contract could scare enough teams away, but a creative GM could find a way to make it happen, even though there are better odds on Antonio McDyess coming out of retirement for a second stint in silver and black.

The same HoopsWorld article also mentioned Spurs forward DeJuan Blair among the players that could be moved soon. Even though Blair has turned things around and has earned some starts, the site still says Blair's days are numbered in San Antonio.

Frankly speaking this trade won't happen. You know Pop and Rc they are not risk takers they don't want to repeat what happen in that trade again with jefferson. Don't expect any moves because pop and rc is just like that. They want to keep their core. Look they recall corey joseph and james anderson If varejao will join the spurs we are the greatest front court with duncan and varejao. Just sayin'

Of course they would be interested and the Spurs have the assets to get him.  They have an expiring contract in Stephen Jackson along with numerous young prospects (Gary Neal, Pat Mills, DeJuan Blair, and Danny Green to name a few).  Varejao would be a nice pickup along with Josh Smith and Al Jefferson as well.

Tyrus Thomas is a joke, can't believe he's still in the Asociation.

@SpurGuy yup, and he'll be paid 30$ million over the next three years?  Or is 40$ million for the next four.  Either way, the Bobcats could not even trade him for a chair of equal value.

lol getting James Anderson back... are we serious? Varejao would be a GREAT pickup. Trade Jackson plus DeJuan Blair and maybe someone else if they are willing to take them. Hell, I'll shake Luke Walton's talentless hands if it means Varejao coming on the team. He's a walking double-double and can defend the rim. He is exactly what we need to beat LA/OKC. Throw in one of our precious draft picks as well for all I care. We have to look at this as a 2-3 year thing and then we are done. WE NEED VAREJAO ASAP. GET HIM ON THE TEAM!!!

First of All Dejuan Blair's value is low first round pick at best, doubt any team would consider him a "valuable chip".

As much as I love Captain Jack and how great he plays, I would be willing to trade him for Varejao. I mean Captain Jack is our most valuable trade asset and since he'll be a free agent towards the end of this season, I'd imagine the Cavs be very interested in that trade.

Why they would want Blair? To form one of the shortest frontline with Biyombo? Believe it or not, Blair has little less value to the other teams; part of his ACLs issue and also his attitude and weight issues. As for Tyrus, I don't understand why the Spurs fan are always high on him. He's just a PF who can jump, that's it. There are reasons that the Bulls and the Bobcats give up on him. They thought he has some potential, but after years they found they were just wasting time. Stromile Swift has equal if not better athleticism as Tyrus. Eventually people will realize these two will walk the same fate.

Can't the Spurs STOP talking about short sized players? Why Anderson? They have an overabundance of guards. They signed deColo to do guard chores. Are they blind? What they need is a big man in the mold of Tyrus Thomas or Anderson Varejao. If he comes with Luke Walton, why should they object to it? He is not bad at all. He has some championship rings while with the Lakers.  and, Thomas I think is 6'10" ft and he can work the interior and guard players like Griffin. If he comes with Kidd-Gilchrist, fine. They don't need players who can shot but, a guy who can guard pf/c. Why talk of Antonio McDyess? His days are over. Why talk of Pietrus? They have several players who can make 3-pointers. Are they really out of options or simply loving so much their dimes? They have to move on. In the event of a trade, they can give Blair, Bonner, Neal, Joseph and draft picks. Come on coach Pop, GM Buford, Mr. Holt. If there is a way to trade with players, DO IT!

@rtesoro440 LMAO real twit..comprehend much? Nowhere does it say that MKG would come with Tyrus. And JA can play sf and THAT combined with his knowledge of the system is why JA was brought back genius. Do you even realize that ALL of our sfs are hurt?

@rtesoro440 yes Mr. Holt, if there are idiots who would take our garbage for their Superstars do not hesitate. Apparently rtesoro thinks you all are complete morons and incapable of realizing what our team needs or have too much free time to read our comments.
