Report: Spurs to sign guard Patty Mills
Written by Jeff Garcia on .
According to Yahoo! Sports, the San Antonio Spurs will sign guard Patty Mills.
Mills, 23, was recently cleared by the Chinese Basketball Association to return to the NBA. The contract is expected to be done within the next 24 hours after the Portland Trail Blazers renounce Mills’ rights.
Mills’ signing will take the Spurs out of the bidding for veteran guard Derek Fisher, who is expected to have his contract bought out by the Houston Rockets after the Los Angeles Lakers traded him.
The Spurs signing Mills means he will be backing up Tony Parker seeing how T.J. Ford recently retired from the NBA due to injury. Mills also played for Spurs assistant coach Brett Brown in Australia. He played for the Melbourne Tigers and averaged 18.6 points, 5 assists, 2.3 rebounds, shot 34.8% from the three-point line, 49.3% from the field in 33.4 minutes in nine game for the Tigers.
Mills also played for the Portland Trail Blazers from 2009-2011 and has an NBA career averages of 5.1 points, 1.5 assists, 35% three-point shooting average, 41% shooting from the field.
This will also mean Gary Neal will be able to move back to his natural position at shooting guard.
What do you have to say Spurs fans? Think the Spurs should have signed Derek Fisher or Mills is a nice, under-the-radar move for San Antonio?
so word is the nuggets are going to waive turiaf, any thoughts on adding him to the bigs rotation? he is also tony's buddy. a decent defender, and gritty.
@JohnAbney Having seen him play a lot, you are right that he is tony's buddy, a decent defender and gritty. However, I really don't like this guy. He makes a lot of mental mistakes like blair. Also he gets too addicted to shot-blocking over playing actualy defense. Moreover, he has no offensive game besides dunking on people. Also, he just outright sucks sometimes. He is very athletic and big, but not very mobile. We need a power forward that can keep up with guys like Z-bo, since well, we all know it would be a nightmare to see him shoot those jumpers at us. However, I just cannot see this guy closing out shooters. He has poor basketball iq as well. Tell me what you guys think though.
@antarescrane 1st we are not looking for a starter, not even a 20-25mpg guy, just a semi defensive big who doesn't mind banging. 2nd, if he isn't the guy then name me any other free agent bigs out there that will fit better.
@JohnAbney @antarescrane You are right. If diaw cannot get in shape, then there isn't exactly a better option. Hickson would be amazing, but he would be more of a long term solution and probably won't be any good this year. Also, we have no idea what ability guys like dawson or wright have, but I guess this guy at least has some size and length that we lack.
Good signing. Signing Fish made since on the surface simply because he has killed us in the playoffs before and is a vet, but honestly, looking at his stats this season, he might be done. I'm not sure anyone will sign him. Playing in the triangle helped mask his physical decline in recent years but he simply wouldn't be a fit in our system imo. I can't see him running a high pick and roll w Splitter and that being effectivel. I'll take the young guy with international experience.
More considered about the depth inside anyway. We need a backup point to get through the regular season, but come playoffs what we will really need is better inside defense. Blair is effective against offensively inept competition, but if you force him to defend consistently he fouls a lot to try to compensate for his lack of size. The team I'm still most afraid of in the west is the Lakers. Bynum and Pau would absolutely kill us inside (if Kobe puts his ego aside and lets them attack all game). A Turiaf signing seems to make since. Guy plays with some energy anyway.
Mr. Pastterson is a bit short by nba standards. He is NOT the player the spurs are looking for. With the trade for Jackson, the spurs surrended their ist round draft. The spurs would have the chance to draft a possible replascement of TD in the future. With no chance to draft a big man now, is the team ready to sign R.Richards? Will tghey bring in Davis Bertans?
@rtesoro440 Where are you from dude? You word everything so weird. Anyways, he is not an ideal signing, but he is a very good back up in my opinion. There is a chance that the spurs might move blair or neal to get back to the draft, so I would not worry too much about that. TD can still ball, and we are not gonna land somebody to replace him unless we are able to make a trade or draft in the top 5 or something like that.
He might be short, but that's because we needed him as our new back-up point guard with TJ Ford retired. He'll be a good pick-up for us. Now that we fixed that, I'm sure the front office are still looking for a big. Let's hope somebody worthy gets waived.
He's young. Has NBA experience, over-seas experience as well. A good add to the Spurs roster.
We signed a Austrailian with a Irish name to back up a Frenchman with a Italian name and help mentor a Canadian with Texas roots right?
@Joey Agreed however as we are talking PG's, i'm talking about parker, who because of his frenchy popularity got parkour named after him which in now the national pastime.
