Spurs bring back Jackson, send Jefferson to Golden State

Written by Trevor Zickgraf on .

Yahoo!'s Marc Spears reports the Spurs and Warriors have finalized a deal that will send Richard Jefferson to Golden State for Stephen Jackson. Spears adds that the Spurs will also send their 2012 first round draft pick to Golden State.  Jackson was with the Spurs from 2001-2003 and was part of the 2003 title team.

The story first broke about an hour before the NBA trade deadline, when ESPN's Ric Bucher reported the Spurs and Warriors are discussing trading Richard Jefferson for a familiar face.

"Source: RJefferson for SJackson being discussed."

Jackson was just traded from Milwaukee to Golden State as part of the Monta Ellis-Andrw Bogut swap.  Jackson and Jefferson make roughly the same money, with Cap'n Jack having only this year and next remaining on his contract. Jackson is averaging ten points, three assists and three rebounds.  When you look at their production, both guys are pretty equal and Jackson's shooting percentages are actually really bad.  But he's aggressive and still a pretty good defender.  He also has a very good relationship with Coach Popovich, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili.  The deadline is 2 PM San Antonio time.  Check back then to see if any other goes down.

The monies involved are almost at par only Jackson's contract is shorter than RJ. Jackson is even older, i think. I don't see  any gain for the spurs. Besides, after the 2003 season, Jackson left. Why? He is NOT the guy the spurs are looking for and they have to give up 2012 ist round draft. The spurs remain a "short guys" team. With only 2 legitimate big guys in TD and Splitter, they have defaulted the chance to draft a big guy in the 2012 draft, unless they plan to bring in Ryan Richards and Davis Bertans next year. I can't see the logic in the move. Let's hope Jackson can help.

%@#& yeah!!!

SJ was talking about playing before the season and how hungry he is for a ring. Bucks didn't seem as hungry as he was tho.. sitting him most of the season.

I REALLY like this trade. Pop keeps SJ in check like none other and SJ already knows the system. If we were able to get Okafor too I'd be outrageously impressed with our F/O

We did it guys.. we unloaded RJ's God awful contract!!!!!!!!!!! LMAO

@TylerCameron the spurs had to sweeten the pot. 100% with no pick no deal. so far no word on if its 2012 or future but if its late 1st round, its not as bad as it seems.

@JohnAbney I won't be so mad if its not 2012, super deep draft and there will be lottery talent towards end of 1st round. Heck give them 2013 and 2014 1 rd picks just keep the 2012.

i like it! jackson is a much better defender, and when motivated is leaps and bounds better then RJ. he has not been happy, and his minutes dropped almost 10 minutes per game. he would surely be the starting SF which would motivate him, and he has always spoken very highly of the spurs and how much he loved his time here. his 3 ball sucks BUT he does so much more that RJ doesnt.

all that said, if RJ ISNT traded, how is this going to hurt his game. i mean this would be the 2-3 time THIS SEASON the spurs have been like "sorry RJ we dont want you and we are going to do what ever we have to to get rid of you". he has played well considering but does he get effected by this?

PAAALEASE let this trade happen, if anything just so we dont have to watch RJ implode from rejection.

@JohnAbney We may have our disagreements John, but I am behind you 100% on this one. RJ's deal was awful as he became just a glorified 3 point specialist making nearly 10 Mill a year. Jackson's defense, size, and overall toughness are much better than RJ. Let's hope Captain Jack buys in 100% to our system and teaches Kawhi the ropes on the bball floor.
