The San Antonio Spurs needs size. Aside from Tim Duncan and Tiago Splitter, the team doesn't have much to contend with the likes of big teams like the Lakers, Grizzlies and Thunder.
So far during the offseason, the Spurs seemed to have stocked up on guards but not much as far as help in the frontcourt - much to the chagrin of Spurs fans.
However, once the offseason began, there were rumors Slovenian big man Erazem Lorbek was heading to San Antonio to join the team heading into next season but in the end, Spanish club Regal Barcelona made him a lucrative offer he couldn't refuse and chose to stay overseas.
But for Lorbek, the choice to not make his way to the NBA was easy but he isn't closing the door on playing in the NBA in the future.
Pointing to his health and style of play, here is what Lorbek had to say (via Mundo Deportivo) about signing with Regal and not San Antonio.
At the end, choose Barca was easy. I had the option of San Antonio but decided to stay here. It is a good choice because I still have a very good and I feel good with my style of play here, more European. That was important.
No, the [NBA door] isn't closed ever but now I'm more focused on playing here. My style of play is a bit more European and therefore decided to stay.
Lorbek signed for three years (the team's largest contract) and family had a huge part in his decision to stay overseas. However, he is 28-years old and should he come to the Spurs after his contract is done, he will be an old rookie with much wear-and-tear on him. Moreover, who knows if the Spurs are in a re-building project (considering Duncan may be retired) and if Lorbek wants to be a part of that process.
In the end, one can't blame Lorbek for staying overseas. Being offered more money than the Spurs can offer is something anyone wouldn't pass up.
What do you have to say Spurs fans? Do you think Lorbek will ever make his way to San Antonio?
Why lure him here? The Spurs don't need him and he doesn't need the Spurs, either. We need a DEFENSIVE BIGMAN and he certainly is not. Plus he will definitely be a bench warmer if he comes here, so why bother?
