Spurs extend qualifying offers to Green, Mills

Written by Paul Garcia on .

According to Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express News, San Antonio Spurs General Manager DGR.C. Buford said after Thursday's NBA draft that the Spurs have extended qualifying offers to both restricted free agents Danny Green and Patty Mills.

This means that when free agency begins on Sunday, July 1, the Spurs will have the option of matching any teams offer sheets they give to either player, before the players are allowed to sign NBA contracts on July 11.

Both Mills and Green were productive this past season with the Spurs, as Green was the starting shooting guard for the majority of the season, before having a rough Western Conference Finals series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, and Mills was a spark off the bench late in the regular season as he helped lead the team to back-to-back victories when the Spurs' big three of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker were being rested before the playoffs.

Thus far, the Boston Celtics have been one team rumored to be interested in Green, and our own Jeff Garcia caught up with Green in New York on Wednesday at Steve Nash's charity soccer game, where he said he would welcome a return to the Spurs, but he'll also be looking for the best situation for him and his family.

Here's a piece from the one-on-one Project Spurs exclusive interview with Green:

Jeff: July 1st is right around the corner. You're looking to hopefully come back to San Antonio?

Danny: (smiling) I am! But business is business at the end of the day. You never know what's going to happen and I got to do what's best for me and my family.

Mills on the other hand wants to see what his value is right now on the open market, because though he enjoys San Antonio, he said he owes it to himself to explore all of his options.

Several teams will contact both free agents when free agency begins on Sunday, and the expectation is the Spurs will match those offers that make financial sense for them. Should either or both players receive deals the Spurs aren't willing to match, then San Antonio has set themselves up with two backup plans, as they can bring in French guard Nando De Colo to play point or shooting guard, while they can also see the growth Cory Joseph has made over the summer, and they can possibly give fresh 2012 draftee Marcus Denmon a shot at the backup point guard slot as well.

i would try to get JR Smith, if not possible, sign Green. I like the way he played

I say yay! I think we need to keep Green at any (reasonable) cost. And I liked mills from what we saw of him. If they keep him I see him getting more minutes.

It comes natural for the Spurs to offer re-signing both Green and Mills. They are lovers of undersized players. Why they even have a pf/c standing at 6'7" in Blair!  Despite the shortcomings of Green in the western finals, the Spurs offered him to be re-signed. It boogles the mind or is it because he comes cheap? Just as suspected they are stingy. They did not trade to draft in the ist or 2nd round draft. NO takers for their assets? It appears to be so. Let's wait free agency which opens Sunday, July 1. But I doubt very much if they will make any move. Stingy as they are, they will NOT sign any free agent to improve their height, a high priority Instead, they will bring in Lorbek because he will be cheaper. Splitter and Lorbek come from the same team. "Birds of the same feather, plays together." What can we expect from the Spurs? If the changes made by the other teams is any indication, the season is lose for the Spurs.

@rtesoro440 you always have idiotic expectations from the front Office. You want them Bring Dwight Howard, lebron James, Chris Paul with minumum salary. It won't even happen in video games. You think it's easy to build a championship caliber team with having 1 pick in top 20 in the last 15 years? There's a reason we have undersized players who perform well, because other teams won't take a chance on them because Dentmon is yet another example, if he were 6 7 he'd be a definite 1st round pick with the efficiency he had. In case you forgot San Antonio is not exactly a heaven for free agents to come and play and we can't even offer money, we can only hope players who want to compete for a championship somehow pick us before the Thunder and the heat. Be realistic and stop positing stupid commments like this!

@Spursforever69If you not a moron, then you must be abonehead. Where did you ever got the idea that I wanted the Spurs to bring inHoward, James, Paul for a minimum pay. Better have you eyes examined illiterate!

@rtesoro440 yeah we are small market deal with it. The Spurs don't generate nearly as much as the Knicks or the Lakers and we still have one of the most expensive rosters in the NBA. So I stand by what I said, you're a complete moron for thinking otherwise.

Also a simple question, would you rather live in LA or SA? so stop with your platitude....

@JohnAbney not to mention a direct trade scenerio ripoff from bleacher reports. I've had this same argument with him about where players sign. It's not just money. There are many variables that are as individual as each player is....

@rtesoro440 @DavidSalazar @Spursforever69 Says the guy who repeats quotes verbatim from every other project spurs article. The man without an original idea or thought. Repetitious attack of an idea doesn't make it a good one. Your uchi Komi sucks

@rtesoro440 You have no idea what your talking about, once again!!! Butler almost sign and it wasn't money. Sign with a team nobody expected to do anything or take similar $ and sign with the flavor of the month in LA. Howard got over paid and the spurs did good by not offering him much. Batier was never gonna sign in San Antonio. He wanted to sign back with Memphis or Miami, he was never even offered any $ by. The spurs. He signed with Miami before just about any team could even get him in to talk.

U get tired with what I post? Then don't read them! I'm NOT complaining. If the other western conference teams can sign and trade, why can't they? "Small Market"? STOP mouthing what you read. Instead, post your opinion. I didn't begin bad mouthing others, they did. If you are for a status quo, you want the Spurs stagnate with the current lineup, fine but DON'T bad mouth me OK?

You aren't tired of hearing the alibi that the Spurs is a "small Market" team? STOP mouthing what you read and hear. Ever heard that Battier, Butler, Howard and some others refused to sign with Spurs  because the pay is low? If you are contented with their achievements trhat's ur right. It is also ur right to see the Spurs stagnent with players they have my friend.

@rtesoro440  @DavidSalazar you idiots don't understand sarcasm lol I'm talking about rtesoro's absurd expectations that our FO somehow doesn't pay enough to bring players. and noobie you commented here for the very first time, go read the plethora of dumb comments by rtesoro then come defend him. This guy has no concept of Cap or market size. He made the same god dam comment last year over 10 times saying "we need size". Like we don't already know that lol..

Everyone wants to see the Spurs get better, but overspend on so-so players and we´ll be just like the lakers or some other sorry teams with no cap relief in sight. Remember we´re a small market team where not many big time prized free agents want to play not cause we can´t pay, but cause we aint Hollywood or Miami beach.

@DavidSalazar @rtesoro440 @Spursforever69 besides he doesn't expect us to sign lebron, Howard & Paul for the minimum. He thinks the spurs have endless money and the salary cap is nonexistent. Because the only reason they wouldn't come to sa is cuz the spurs are cheap....

@Spursforever69  @rtesoro440 Where did he say that wanted to bring in Dwight, Lebron, or CP3? And what are you arguing about? He's giving his opinion about the Spurs upcoming free agency. Your blasting him about how undersized players do well in san antonio because no one takes a chance on them, and he didn't even mention anything about them. Some spurs fan you are. Be realistic and stop posting stupid comments.
