Should the Jazz and Spurs start talking trade?

Written by Trevor Zickgraf on .

One thing we know for sure about the San Antonio Spurs' offseason is that the team will re-sign Tim Duncan sometime on or shortly after July 11th.  After that, the Spurs' offseason is a bit of a crap shoot.  They have a couple of guys, Danny Green and Boris Diaw that we presume they'd like re-sign and a couple of European players, Nando De Colo and Erazem Lorbek, who reportedly would like to come state side next season.  That's four players and not a ton of money or roster space for all of them.  There's also news out of Utah, where Danny Green thinks he'd be a good fit, that Jazz forward Paul Millsap is looking for a contract extension.  This leads me to wonder if Utah would be interested in discussing some sort of swap involving Millsap if they thought Green was their shooting guard in the future.

Let's be clear, Millsap and Green are not equal players.  Millsap is a near All-Star who is in the prime of his career.  Utah is sure to re-sign him, right?  Maybe not because Utah already has two big men in Derrick Favors and Enes Kanter that could end up being better than Millsap (Favors maybe even next season).  Woudln't Utah rather trade Millsap to improve their team in other ways?  The Spurs don't want to lose Green, but if Utah offers him $4 or $5 million a year should the Spurs match?  Wouldn't make more sense to engage Utah in a sign and trade package revolving around Millsap.  Utah needs some reliable shooters badly.  Would a Danny Green, Matt Bonner and future first round pick be enough for Millsap?  Bonner would be more useful to Utah than most because he could play with Favors, Kanter and Al Jefferson and Green would provide perimeter shooting and defense that Utah just didn't have last season.

Millsap is in the final year of a contract that pays him $8.6 million and he's looking for an extension in the four year, $40 million range.  This is something the Spurs could do because they'll have plenty of cap space starting next summer and there are worse ways to spend $40 million than on a 27 year old power forward who can score and rebound (see: Jefferson, Richard contract).  Millsap could play with Duncan or Tiago and is a decent pick and roll and isolation defender.  It doesn't solve the Spurs' shot blocking problems, but it would be an upgrade over Boris Diaw (assuming they can even re-sign him).  If it doesn't work out next year than the Spurs have another $8 million in cap space, which isn't a bad thing at all.  First things first though, you have to get Jazz GM Kevin O'Connor to agree to this sort of thing and he's no dummy.

If the spurs have to get anyone from the jazz it might have to be AL JEFFERSON! He is 6'11, 280 lbs., and 27 years old! he is an assest to the spurs roster! He is a good starter with Duncan! The spurs shud trade Bonner, Blair, Neal, Draft pick, Cash, and Cory Joseph/James Anderson for Jefferson and Milsap... Just saying?

I would love to have Milsap but we would have to find some more shooters because Danny Green and The Red Rocket are two of some of our best shooters and all year the Spurs relied on their perimeter shooting. Now if we could trade Danny Green and some draft picks for Millsap then I'd be cool but trading away all of are shooters doesn't help plus we'd still need to find a replacement for Danny Green. That said I love Paul Millsap, hopefully we'd be able to find another shooter or two.

so the jazz traded harris for marvin williams, green is not going to be of interest to them. well he might be but it wouldnt make much sense.

i would love for the spurs to trade for any big EXCEPT milsap on the jazz. al jeff, kantor, or favors would all be up the spurs ally but i dont expect the jazz to part with any of them. milsap though is just a much better blair. he is still under sized, and cant defend bigger guys. blair is a better passer and just as good a rebounder and much cheaper. i say veto to milsap.

So, who is a wishful thinker now? You want al jefferson, Kanter or Favors. And who will you give, Blair, Green, Bonner, Splitter? Not for your life! Come on, post "original" and "close to truth" comments, dude.

@rtesoro440 @WOW HA! Somehow I get the image of a pot and a kettle in your comment. Your so cute rtesoro. My 9 yr old thinks your an uneducated idiot but I think your awesome. Sonny boy, your boring me. You have yet to give a compelling argument or even speak of the spurs in 2 days. You need to come stronger and/or speak on the spurs because your wasting band width with your existence.

You are a Mongoose! Dreaming while the sun shines. Anyway dude, by any stretch of imagination Milshap will be an upgrade over blair, bonner or green. But dream on, sign Al Jeff, Kanter and Favors in your dream. It might just happen.

George Hill will be in an Indiana Pacers uniform for the next five years. The team has come to terms with their defensive specialist. No word yet on the financials involved. We would expect a deal in the $5 million range.

With Blair, Bonner and possibly Green, the Jazz may give Milshap. No future draft picks please.

I like your thinking on this, particularly if millsap is not in the jazz long term plans. Heck, they could have Blair as a cheap one year rental to replace him. Don't like the first round pick though. Green/Blair (or bonner)/2nd round pick for Millsap is pretty appealing for both teams, no?

sign and trade Green for Alec Burks, make him study under Manu and eventually take his job when Manu retires.

I wouldn't mind Derrick Favors:P

The guy plays NASTY.  I do remember him dominating Splitter in the 1st round.

I much prefer Millsap to Josh Howard, so if we do trade with them, that would be the way to go. This trade scenerio sounds pretty good and somewhat realistic, but do the Jazz want Bonner? Oh, Trevor your title of this article gave me a headache...

@spursfan80 Nice catch, not sure how we missed that editing mistake. Can I blame the iphone auto correct if I wrote it on a PC?

Probably not likely now as the Jazz are trading for Marvin Williams.
