Report: Lorbek re-signing with Regal Barcelona

Written by Paul Garcia on .

After it was reported on Saturday that Slovenian Erazem Lorbek was going to be offered the most ELmoney in Regal Barcelona history, a new report has surfaced from Solobasket.com that states Lorbek has agreed to re-sign with the Spanish team and not join the San Antonio Spurs (who traded for his draft rights in 2011) after all.

According to the report, it is speculated Lorbek will be offered approximately more than 2 million euros, roughly $2,457,757 U.S. dollars per season.

As you recall, a recent report had Lorbek being considered as more of a plan B for the Spurs because the report said the Spurs were first targeting a physical center before negotiating with the Slovenian big man. Now, if the report is true, Lorbek will stay in Barcelona where he just won the Liga title and is set to be one of the richest players playing in Spain.

If this report is true that Lorbek will re-sign with Regal, then that means the Spurs' frontcourt is currently headed by Tiago Splitter, DeJuan Blair, and Matt Bonner. Tim Duncan is in the process of re-signing with the team while the expectation is the team will look to re-sign Boris Diaw, though no talks have been reported yet.

The Spurs have reportedly been targeting centers like Marcus Camby and Chris Kaman so far in free agency. If Lorbek is out of the picture, they'll have to rely on either free agency or trades to make changes in their frontcourt.

In addition, Mundo Deportivo is reporting Barcelona offered Lorbek 3 million euros (3,686,635 U.S. dollars) per season.

Now with the Spurs having to sign Tim Duncan, Danny Green, and the rest of their own free agents, one has to wonder if there will be financial room to sign Lorbek.

Keep in mind, this is the only news report claiming Lorbek will stay with Barcelona but what do you have to say Spurs fans? If the report is true, can you blame Lorbek for cashing in on a huge payday or would you have rather see him play in the NBA?

In some way, it's a good news. Don't wanna see another unathletic, slow, no-defense guy here. He only got almost mini-midlevel and rather stay there so why bring him out? I don't think his service will be better than our D-leaguer like Eric Dawson.

Plan B, guys, or are we contented with runnerup western conference or worse? The Spurs were outbidded $3m Euros by the Barcelona group. Cheap if you ask me but, prohibitive by Spurs' standard. So, how will they compete in free agency? Are there free agents available that cheap? Possibly! Let's wait and see how the Spurs count their pennies. Ha ha ha.

I have no problem with his decision whatsoever. I think the majority of spurs fans didn't want him to come over anyway. He's 28, now going to spend at least 2 more years in Europe, so he's never going to jump the pond. I guess he doesn't want to prove himself against the world's best talent. I never liked him that much anyways, he's 28, that's just too old to be coming over to the NBA. Approaching the end of his prime, he might as well just stay in Europe where he's now going to be one rich dude. Now that that's out of the way, the spurs can finally start browsing for what they really need, a YOUNG and athletic big man. There are a handful of them that went undrafted and some cut loose from a team. Anthony Randolph is one. Big body (tall and long but not heavy, he could gain some weight), freakishly athletic for a guy his size with good ball handling skills, but needs to work on his post game a little. Henry Sims is another guy who has a big body, long, a pretty good shot blocker and young. He didn't have the best first 3 years of college, but he could possibly be another diamond in the rough the spurs could mold. I don't want the spurs to go after players like Camby, Kaman, Josh Howard, or anyone like that. Camby is way too old, Kaman is not athletic at all (I do remember him getting abused by an older Tim Duncan every time we played the hornets), and Josh Howard just plains sucks now. There is no Duncan 2.0 out there right now, and we obviously won't see one for a while, unless Anthony Davis makes true of all the predictions on him. So the spurs need a big body with a good deal of athleticism with young legs. They are out there and hopefully we can snag one before it's too late.

@ajd21 An older Tim Duncan with adequate rest can abuse many bigs out there still. Lorbek is done forever with the Spurs now. That's ok. Now Bonner or Blair or both will be packing their bags for sure. I'' still take Kaman over 38 year old Camby. If we can get Randolph very cheap and squeeze Kaman in as well then a front court of Timmy, Splitter, Kaman, and Randolph is way better than the the front court we had last season. Tall, Tall, Tall, Tall. Some can shoot, some have good footwork, some can block shots at the rim but they can all rebound. O'll take that any day.

He's 28 now. Plays for two or three years more in Europe. Forget it!

I for one want to say, "Thank the Lord". I cannot deal with another Euro stiff in our lineup! Rasho did it for me. I remember some of these clowns trying to sell us on him. F%$& that!

@dcarlock Dude Rasho played well enough to give Timmy help  and earn his ring. I saw it all.

@dcarlock Yeah and at least Rasho could play defense and rebound. I want a blocking rebounding center instead of another big shooter.

No big deal. Why not get T Murphy. He rebounds, shot 42% from 3pt, is almost 7ft. There is also DJ White, a good rebounder, mid range shooter who can block a few shots or Shawne Williams from Port. Hit over 40% on 3's with over 300 attempts, can drive to the basket and block a few shots. Many low profile options, not counting the J. Thompsons, Randolph. Jianlian, Arthur group. We have a core, so the skills need only support the core and improve our athleticism without giving up last seasons adavnatges. Bring back Diaw, and add a Murphy + DJ White. Lorbek was never needed.

@jojo707 Murphy is a good rebounder but he's no much a defender in the post, he will be a better version of Bonner, but that's pretty much it. DJ White is a slow and undersized PF, don't think he's any better than Blair despite maybe 1 or 2 inches taller. Thompson will be an ideal option but I don't think we have enough budget to throw at him and the Kings will match that every dollar.

So Lorbek has decided to re-sign with Regal Barcelona. So which Center is spurs pursuing? Camby might sign with the Knicks and Kaman will definitely find better suitors. So, are we actually trying to improve our frontcourt? I see them signing Boris and maintain the same frontcourt like the last season. Nothing is going to change much.

@nish21 Kaman has no where else to go and he wants to go somewhere. His situation might be in the Spurs favor. I don't like Boris he is too undersized as well. You want more of that in the playoffs next season going into the western Conference finals? I don't and I'll pass on Diaw.

@TitletownX4  @nish21 Diaw is not only undersized but slow, very slow, maybe because he's over-weighted. He's too soft to guard the league's PFs, way too slow to guard the league's SFs; despite making passes, I wonder what he can actually help? Are you sure you wanna use him to guard Nowitzki, Randalph, Griffin, P.Gasol, Ibaka....etc??? For Kaman, he's not coming, he won't accept offer less than the full MLE; and MLE probably will make him only sign a 1 yr contract, then he will look for a long one after this season.

@nish21 When Sam Presti is gone, the Spurs' FO seem like don't know how to run the organization any more.
