Report: Spurs interested in guard Bo McCalebb
Written by Jeff Garcia on .
The San Antonio Spurs certainly have an abundance of guards currently on the roster with Tony Parker, Cory Joseph, Patty Mills, Nando De Colo, and Marcus Denmon to name a few. So perhaps the last thing the Spurs need to do is look for another guard, right?
According to Sportando, San Antonio is interested in guard Bo McCalebb and have recently offered to buyout his contract with Montepaschi Siena in Italy. However, according to the report, the buyout offer was rejected by Siena.
McCalebb has an out clause at the end of the upcoming season and is drawing interest from other Euroleague teams such as Fenerbahce who can offer more towards a buyout than the Spurs can.
Bo (5'10", 180 pounds) averaged 16.9 points, 1.3 steals, 2.6 assists, 2.2 rebounds, and shot 63% from the field in 27.4 minutes in 17 games for Siena last season.
As mentioned above, San Antonio has plenty of guards who can be on the roster next season so why the team would be looking at yet another guard is interesting if the report is true.
Many fans feel the team should be targeting big men, however, the team is in a financial pinch after the recent signings of Tim Duncan, Mills, De Colo, Boris Diaw, and Danny Green so acquiring a top-tier free agent big man is out difficult which makes McCalebb affordable.
What do you think Spurs fans? What do you have to say about the report San Antonio is after another guard?
Someone knows something I don't. Tony Parker is a proven playoff player. His points and minutes where up in the playoffs and his TO's where up a little as well. He also shot 49% from the field and 80% from the line. So I guess you're right, if you want to trade Parker now I guess his stock would be high with the exception of the Night Club situation. The only problem that leaves is Manu for dribble penetration. None of the point guards on the team now can penetrate like Tony Parker. Even with Parker and Manu, Spurs need one more player who can dribble penetrate. Lenord, Green, Jackson and Neal cannot dribble penetrate. Mills likes to shot jumpers and the other guys are unproven. I never seen Bo play before, So I do not know what he can do in the NBA.
@PopKat I agree with you on TP..that being said, if Bo WERE to come over, that in no way guarantees TP is leaving. Could be that Spurs plan on CJ going to Toros 1 more yr, Neal (hopefully) never playing PG again, and Bo just being TPs backup. Look at youtube for many good Bo highlights. Seems to me he's actually FASTER than TP and dribble penetration is his forte..At LEAST as good as TP's and maybe BETTER considering he's definitely more athletic than TP. He dunks regularly. My bet would be that Bo could easily be Spurs best dribble penetrator. Also it actually looks like KL has already improved that as well. He's certainly working on it. He did a lot of it in vegas.
Anderson is not on the roster and RC Buford said he Anderson was at the summer league to showcase his talents to other teams. If Anderson makes an NBA team for the upcoming season which I doubt, it will be with a team where the GM and/or coaches have an affiliation with the Spurs. Anderson looked out of shape in the summer league and did not play that well.
The only way they may be able to get rid of Bonner and Blair is with a Jospeh and/or a Neal. I hate to see Neal go because he is a cold-blooded clutch 3 point shooter, like Jackson.
@PopKat Actually, EVERY team has reps at summer league looking at every teams players, so any team could be willing to take a flier on JA, not just ones that have ties to SA. But you ARE right that he didnt impress much. Could very well end up overseas, and that may not be bad for him because I think he just needs to play more to get over his obvious confidence issue.
And ya, VERY likely Blair would have to be combined with at least one other player to get moved because he has tiny contract. Unfortunately, I think we are stuck with Bonner. Doubtful we will get any takers for him this year, and Im not even convinced that Pops doesnt still think he works well on spurs. Good news is that he can be cut outright next year..lol I dont really want to lose Neal either, but if it brings back at least equal value, Im ok with it especially since his deal would have to be guaranteed in a few months anyway. If Neal could do even ONE thing besides shoot well, I'd be against it.
I believe the Spurs will be making a trade involving some or all of the following players on the roster: Bonner, Blair, Jospeh and maybe Neal.
@Spursfan66 @PopKat same i want to get rid of bonner blair neal i like jospeh but get rid of anderson
@Aj72198 @PopKat Anderson is pretty much already gone (no contract), Blair is already on trade block, Neals deal has to be guaranteed this year so he may be gone by then, Denmon hasnt been offered a contract, Mills is actually solid as a backup for the $ we paid, and Im thinking CJ is likely going to be toro again this year (at least some of the time) Beyond that, since Spurs were just 2 wins from finals, its unlikely wholesale changes would or SHOULD be made
i think he is just what we need a slasher and i think he is better and has more potential then mils, and neal.
@Aj72198 DEFINITELY better pg than neal..that failed experiment is over..lol Bo MAY be better than Mills now, but not sure he has more potential than PM because Bo is several years older already. Seems to me that Bo and PM are VERY similar. Except Bo seems to go to the rim more while PM seems to like the jumper more
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAamJml1VLQ I think Bo isn't 'just another guard'....
@Spurs 4 life Thanks for the youtube link! He looks to be super quick, and I'm sort of surprised he has the ability to dunk it! I'd really be curious to see his performance on defense against longer and stronger guards though.
You welcome! I'm from Europe and believe me,Bo is a walking explosion...;)
Enough with the small guards. This guy may be good, but come on, he's 5'10!!!!! Trust me, he would get crushed trying to penetrate with Serge Ibaka, Anthony Davis, heck even Tim Duncan in the paint. Judging by the way the spurs are working their offseason, I highly doubt the will grab a young big man to help out duncan. How lame, they are not going after the ONE piece that they desperately need.

Answer to your question...They first need to catch him...
@ajd21 Ty Lawson has to be an exception. He's 5 11" and makes people look silly. Wouldn't mind having a player his caliber.
McCalebb is best european guard at this time, much better than De Colo...trust me, I am from Europe and I watching european basketball constantly...
I like hassan whiteside. he can't score but he can block shots. I would rather take a chance on him then blatche or anderson.
With all these undersized bodies the Spurs seem to be holding onto or seeking out, I'd certainly pay to see a squad of basketball playing hobbits go head to head with this Spurs team somewhere in Middle Earth.
Certainly, hobbit fans would distract Bonner with the smell and presentation of a fine elven sandwich, and he'd likely would disappear into the woods or that magical far away land of aloofness and bliss he annually ventures to in the postseason. Bilbo Baggins would then out wile the wise old wizard himself, Poppovich the Kind of Grey, from the bench as he utilizes a fat hobbit to clog the lane thereby limiting Tony and Manu's penetration to render the entire Spurs offense completely useless. In the paint, despite the heroic efforts of Timmy, Frodo Baggins, Pippin, and Merry would precede to out-rebound and get the best of Splitter, Diaw, and Blair after which Blair would take to Twitter in a series of 17 tweets sent one after another in a time span of 37 seconds to complain about something from the game in what appears to be nonsensical jargon ending in SMH.
In the waning moments, a frustrated Stephen Jackson, after being insulted by Samwise Gamgee about his funny looking headband and making fun of his rap album, would precede to burn the Shire to the ground and later record his next single about said conquest (And how he has no regret about it. Kind of.)
The End
If true, the Spurs are just acting true form. McCalebb has the right height and maybe age. He stands at 5'10" and yeah ideal for the Spurs kind of player. They have the shortest center, now maybe the shortest guard. Halelluyah! Long Live Spurs!
I think they should trade Blair, Splitter, and definitely Bonner for maybe a first and second round pick next year and they should sign Hassan Whiteside, Jerome Jordan, and Ryan Richards. that would a very defensive oriented team similar to the teams that won multiple championships. The rotation of PG: Parker, Mills, De Colo SG: Ginobili, Neal, Denmon SF: Lenard, Jackson PF: Duncan, Diaw C: Jordan, Whiteside, Richards (all good defensive players and can score if needed) I think that is good enough to win a Championship or two.
Bo McCalebb is a great player, very very good penetrator and for sure, better player then De Colo and Mills at this stage of their careers...No,we aren't talking about playing 'small ball' here,we're taliking about finding penetrators other then Parker nad Ginobili...If we had one more penetrator, outside Manu and Tony in the WCF, we would go by OKC...Thats my opinion...Also,don't forget, Bo led Macedonia by himself to top 4 spot in last European basketball c'ship...
@Spurs 4 life Then what is the game plan? Having penetrators and shooters? But someone needs to defend the rim. This technique has failed for three consecutive years. Why not try something different? And, then why did we sign De Colo? This move does not make any sense at all.
@nish21 @Spurs 4 life De Colo is a combo, remember..could end up being spurs top assist guy. And really, you almost have to assume this move would come in conjunction with at least one guard getting moved
@spursfan80 Imo TP hasn't been bad at ALL. Pretty much our best player now in fact. My main point in thinking it COULD be TP is only in part because of the drama stuff. Ultimately it would absolutely only happen IF Spurs could get a comparable player whether big or small or medium..lol (ya i hope big too)
But TP has been the subject of trade speculation for years. I for one thought it would be tp, not George hill that was traded. But with CJs maturity in SL and mills resigned we have 2 you pgs who know the system. The time could be ripe for trading tp...
@Spursfan66 @Spurs 4 life @nish21 I think its more of how do they fill their needs vs drama (in the scope of athletes, tp hasn't been thaaat bad). They don't have the cap space for a quality big, but trading arguably the best PG in the league should yield us a decent big if we desired. I'm sure any teams interested are following him with team France to see how his eye effects his game.
@spursfan80 @Spurs 4 life @nish21 Im with you here 80..where theres smoke theres fire. Im also not really comfortable with losing TP right now, but that could easily change depending on who comes back. Honestly, after the whole bottle incident this summer, I immediately felt like TP may go. I made this same view on SN and some twit acted like TP had NEVER done anything that could possibly have tee'd pops off.. But truth is, pops has next to no patience for drama like this..ESPECIALLY after the Sexting drama AND being quoted as saying Spurs window had closed. This could easily have been the last straw
@Spurs 4 life @Spursfan66 @nish21
Maybe De Colo is going to play more of the 2? I'm in agreement, PATFO have to see how the roster looks right now, and have something up their sleeves if they are going to sign McCalebb. I'm going to go on a limb and make my call. I'm going with Parker getting traded (although I'm not at all certain or comfortable making that call). He is our greatest trade chip, and was up on the trade block the year before last. I know he was the floor general last year, but if spurs are looking at more PGs, I'm at a loss....
I'm thinking in same direction...If we acquire Bo,we have trade in place which will include Neal or some other guard... ;)
We were 1 penetrator away from NBA finals...OKC had 3,we had 2 and that was difference in my opinion, because our bench was better then theirs...I may be wrong, but im pretty sure Pop's thinking is somewhere similar...Yes,thats our game plan until TD and Manu retire, because they dont have enough yrs left to change game plan again...De Colo can play 1 and 2...If we don't sign another penetrator, then we must believe in Kawhi's progress on that area or in De Colo...Don't see other choice...
@rtesoro440 @Spurs 4 life @nish21 lol rt..you should be surprised at optimism..you've never felt it before
I certainly am surprised by your optimism. Hope these players will not let you down.
Because it's a team sport and you need time for your team to gel....Thats where I see our chance. It's not about superstars in makeing,it's about team in makeing! You can't expect Green to be perfect in his ONLY full season ,in Splitter's 1st serious PO and KL 1st!They will be matured too and our bench is still better then theirs . Btw Fisher is gone. He def. had impact in series....Jack and Diaw will have full year so we can have some new sets on our offense and defense...Having said all that,we still won 2 games, had them in game 6(which is controversial in many ways)didn't we!?So many things can happen, for example, they can run on LAC which is tough matchup for them and be eliminated, just like we have against MEM...I'm not a fan of radical changes, neither is our FO...You just need time for something to be real good and I honestly think we have all right pieces to win title in next 2yrs...
@Spurs 4 life Then let us be practical that TD will retire with 4 rings and Manu with 4. TD, Manu will be older by one year and OKC will be more matured. Remember we have one star in making in KL and they have three Durant, WB, and JH. Right now Ibaka is as good as KL. These guys can play for the whole 48 minutes bcoz they are young and more athletic than the spurs. They improved by adding Perry Jones. Last year we had all the players healthy and still we could not find an answer. How do you think we will be able to beat them this year?
