According to ESPN's Ric Bucher, the San Antonio Spurs still have a possible shot at landing New Orleans Hornets center Chris Kaman.
Bucher tweeted the Spurs, along with the Dallas Mavericks, Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings, and Utah Jazz are all still in contention to land Kaman.
Thus far, the only team to meet with Kaman has been the Pacers when they learned free agent Roy Hibbert was offered a max deal with the Portland Trailblazers. The Pacers haven't decided if they'll match the Blazers' deal on July 11, which means Kaman would be their plan B if they lose Hibbert.
Bucher didn't specify what kind of deal Kaman is looking for, but he could definitely get more minutes with the Mavericks, Pacers, and Spurs. If you recall, Kaman was allowed to play with Dirk Nowitzki and Germany recently, so he has the Dallas connection, but the Mavs look like a lottery roster right now with their three best players being Nowitzki, Shawn Marion, and Vince Carter.
The Spurs are currently in process of re-signing Tim Duncan, and they too have some room on their roster if they can't re-sign Boris Diaw, can't bring in Erazem Lorbek, or if they find a trade partner for DeJuan Blair or Matt Bonner. If you recall, the Spurs were one team rumored to want to pursue Kaman when word came out in March that the Hornets were thinking of buying out his contract.
The Kings and Jazz look to have log jams in their front courts with the Jazz having Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap, plus Derrick Favors. The Kings have DeMarcus Cousins, presuming Jason Thompson, and rookie Thomas Robinson, but they might have more money to throw at Kaman than say the Spurs.
@inmortal If that means trade Blair and Bonner it's a good direction to go anyway.
Spurs need to start making some kind of moves...to help us out...a big guy for sure, outside shooting for sure...someone who doesn't get scared in the playoffs...lol
@dtootall The Spurs' FO are not smart anymore, after Presti went to Thunder. They just grab Perry Jones III at 28 ! Lost both Dell Demps and Sam Presti together exposed Pop and RC's clueless.
Guys, the writers here at ProjectSpurs are just doing their jobs. Who cares if it's a long shot or not? It's still worthy to write and post about it.
The Eighth wonder of the world is the spurs fans. We are always over excited, speculating big spurs moves in the free agency knowing nothing of that sort has ever happened in the past.
This just in, Spurs interested in Dwight Howard. Kidding. I doubt we can afford kaman, but I would like to have him.......although he does seem to be injury plagued.
@Coxcr20 HA, im sure the spurs are interested in howard. kaman would be a very good upgrade on our blair/bonner/thiago trifecta but at what cost? now a sign and trade for blair and/or bonner and say gary neal or a pick? that would be worth it. hornets would likely be more interested in neal then the pick.
I love the spurs they my team but all this spurs interested in this guy or that guy the spurs don't have the money to get these players we might looking at the same team for the upcoming season I wish they can make some good changes or something surprise me
