Report: Barcelona to offer Lorbek largest contract in team history

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

If forward Erazem Lorbek is going to head to the San Antonio Spurs next season, he may have to choose between playing on basketball's highest stage or accept one of the largest contract in Barcelona team history.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Spanish team FC Barcelona will offer Lorbek the largest contract in team history. See image below, bottom right corner.

Again, if the report is true, it would seem Lorbek will have to decide between playing against the best basketball talent in the world or accept a huge payday.

However, this won't be the first time the Spurs had to face this situation. When Tiago Splitter was mulling over a decision to play in the NBA, teams offered Splitter huge offers to remain in the Euroleague but in the end, he passed up on the money and is now a contributor on one of the NBA's best teams.

And with reports that the Spurs are looking at other big men before negotiating with Lorbek, it seems it will be a 50-50 shot Lorbek will make the leap to the NBA next season.

What do you have to say Spurs fans? Think he will take a huge payday or come play with the Spurs?

ANYONE BUT BONNER PLEASE. He has not performed consistently in 3 straight playoffs. Charles Barkley predicted that Bonner would have a "breakout" series against the Thunder. So what happened? Bonner averaged less than 1ppg with 14% three-point shooting in 10 mpg. For 4 mil a year, I can honestly say that he is the biggest waste of money I have ever seen. Why do we bother going over this every year with his +/- stats and the fact that he spreads the floor? The fact is, he can't rebound, he can't defend, and when the moment is its biggest, he is no where to be found behind the arc. HE IS A COMPLETE WASTE OF FUCKING MONEY AND SPACE. I don't really care if we waste our amnesty on him, I do not want to see him in a Spurs uniform next season. We can put that salary to much better use on another big or anyone else who can play basketball. Please R.C., don't waste Tim Duncan's precious last seasons with Matt Bonner at his side.

And that's why we're looking for another big instead of him. Obviously they get the news before any of us do.

A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.  FO needs to do something.

Players generally choose money over any other consideration. Lorbek just as well choose the first. The least that the Spurs need is a shooter. What they need is a strong presence inside the perimeter. Shooters are dime a dozen but, finding a good rebounder is not easy. $ is scarce, they may as well spend it elsewhere and they are known to pinch their penny.

I hope Lorbek takes the contract. He won't do anything good for the Spurs anyway. He doesn't block shots and he's not athletic and he is soft. All he does it shoot. Thats the last thing I want to see on the team is another big man who doesn't know it

@sa2ny2004 @AirAlamo Lorbek would be choosing $$ over competing in the best league in the world under the best tutelage in the world. #Spurs

@arisports @sa2ny2004 I'm biased but I would go with the Spurs in a heartbeat. Then again I'm not sure I would pass a ton of $$ either.

Spurs should just amnesty Bonner (if cannot find a trade partner) and sign Lorbek. He is more skilled, younger and might cost us the same or less than Bonner. He is an instant upgrade over Bonner. And, then we should pursue another center.

@nish21 I like what your saying but I don't think the Spurs would amnesty Bonner's contract. The rule was brought in for monstrous liability contracts, like the ones for Gilbert Arenas & Rashard Lewis, as opposed to those for role players like Bonner 4-5 mill a season.

@sa2ny2004 Welp. They just won't let him go easily. Hah.
