Spurs interested in J.R. Smith?

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

While the San Antonio Spurs and several other teams await free agent Kenyon Martin's decision on where he will suit up this season, there is another free agent reportedly on the Spurs' radar -- J.R. Smith.

Smith, like Martin, played in China during the NBA lockout and is now trying to plead his case to make it back to the NBA despite the CBA's (Chinese Basketball Association) rule that no locked out NBA players could return to the NBA until the CBA's season is over.

However, once Smith is released from playing in China, could the Spurs be the next destination for Smith?

According to Yahoo! Sports, San Antonio has significant interest in acquiring the free agent swingman.

Smith is an unrestricted free agent, and Chandler and Brooks are restricted free agents, likely to re-sign with Denver and Phoenix, respectively. Smith has significant interest around the NBA, including the Lakers, Knicks, Spurs and several more potential contenders.

If true, then this is an interesting move by San Antonio. Currently, the Spurs have swingmen James Anderson, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green (who has been playing well for the Spurs) on the roster which means adding Smith would take away minutes from these players. Not to mention Smith isn't a "team-first" kind of player, is a gunner, and isn't a typical Spurs-type player on and off the court.

However, this isn't the first time the Spurs went after Smith.

Several years ago, the Spurs went after Smith when he was playing with the Charlotte Hornets. San Antonio offered Brent Barry but were unable to get the deal done due to paperwork not being submitted before the trade deadline.

I can't see the Spurs adding Smith to the mix. The more pressing concern is still adding size to the roster (Martin or Chris Kaman) and not another small forward-guard. Smith may be able to fill the basket but he may not be much of a defender for San Antonio and again, Green is playing well for the Spurs and I would hate to see his minutes decrease due to Smith being added to the roster. Not to mention once Ginobili returns to action, the Spurs will be more than set at the swingman spot.

What do you have to say Spurs fans? If the report is true, would you like to see Smith added to the roster?

Please say it isn't so!!! He is an idiot!! that would, absolutely, ruin our reputation for only signing character people.

I agree about the size but man oh man when Smith is hot he is one hell of a player to watch. When he's Hot that boy is Hot. He can light it up as a shooter but at the same time when he's cold he can throw up some real clankers but the Spurs with the depth at the wing position could always sit him once he's cold and ride him when he's hot plus that would give Pop another scoring option for the Sixth man other than Manu.

@NorCalSpursFan I mean, I know what you are saying and I agree. But JR Smith just strikes me differently. Sometimes he would just run up the court and jack up a three. While the others that you point to were certainly headcases, I also think they knew their role to some degree. JR tries to take over games. and sometimes, that isn't a good thing. maybe you are right tho.

How can any of you be in favor of this? Do you not remember he was benched for the playoffs last year cuz of his attitude (and it wasn't the first time). The guy is a headcase. Not worth the risk.

Maybe they know something about Manu's injury that we don't?

However, TJ Ford might be out a little longer than expected.

I doubt it. I heard that Manu is on schedule and should be back sometime during the Rodeo Road Trip.

J.R. Smith to San Antonio Spurs would be a blockbuster move. It's like taking candy from a baby. Needing the 3's from the bench nowadays, Smith can bring that to the team . . Pop changing his offense to a 3 point caliber team, it'll be a good significant move for San Antonio Spurs and the organization.

JR Smith won't fit the spurs' system. He is a one man wrecking crew and has some issues. If they did hire Smith, it will be to replace Anderson. Good for Anderson. He will be sogned by another team. The memories of Scola and Mahinmi will haunt the spurs. If they go for a trade for Kaman, give RJ, Joseph and Blair or Anderson. As for RJ he was almost Amnestied. Its just no small forward coming. Too easy to replace Joseph and Blair is too small to play pf/c. I hate to see Anderson go but he is unappreciated by the spurs.

I would love to see Smith in the silver and black uni! And this is how it will work, by trading for Kaman, and in exchange giving up RJ, Anderson, Joseph! This will the Spurs some much needed attitude. And if it doesn't work Kaman has an expiring contract! JR can't possibly play any worst than Garbage R.J.

The reality is that Green has been good but for how long? Will he play this good in the playoffs? JR is a stud that has plenty of experience!@JeffProjectSpurs

@JeffProjectSpurs @NorCalSpursFan not if by picking up smith you use kawhi in more of a combo forward role, which is more natural for him. In addition to that I see pop playing green as more of a combo guars depending on who he's in with. But tge only way I see this pick up happening is doing the trade mentioned above ^^ but sending tj. Instead of joseph cause if we pick up smith then the only way to fit all our 2s is to have a second unit combo of neal and green and have them split both guard duties between them so kawhi plays at 3 in the 2nd unit but if that's done there's very few leftover minutes at the 1 and id rather have a learning rookie have those sporadic minutes to boost himself rather than a vet who could become very disgruntled if given that role
