According to Sports Illustrated's Sam Amik, the San Antonio Spurs have signed journeyman forward Ike Diogu to a one-year deal.
Diogu played with the Los Angeles Clippers last season and averaged 5.8 points, and 3.2 rebounds in 36 games for the Clippers.
Diogu at 6'9", and 250 lbs. will help the Spurs interior and give the team the size they desperately need. Currently, the only big men on the roster are Tim Duncan and Tiago Splitter. DeJuan Blair is undersized (though has been playing great so far this season) and Matt Bonner is more of a perimeter player. With Diogu, they Spurs will have a "banger" in the post.
This move also coincides with rookie Cory Joseph being sent to the Toros today which may mean the move was made to make room for Ike on the roster.
However, with Manu Ginobili out 4-6 weeks due to a broken finger suffered in last night's loss to Minnesota, one will wonder if San Antonio will be looking at possible shooting guards to act as a stop-gap until Manu returns to the court.
Project Spurs' Trevor Zickgraf weighed in on the signing of Diogu:
"I like this pick up, even if it just gives the Spurs some extra size. At 6'9" he's not huge, but big enough. I feel like he's never had a coach give him a chance to succeed or that injuries have always screwed him up. I have no idea if the Spurs will give him a chance to succeed but with six games in the next eight nights I do think he'll get a chance to play."
What do you have to say Spurs fans? Think Diogu will help the Spurs or should the team have gone after another player to help in the paint?
The King's are not going to trade Cousins unless someone makes them a ludicrous offer...period. RJ, Blair and Green are not going to be spinning the heads of the King's front office. Regardless of what happens this season, it is time for someone to realize that the Spurs brain trust is not what it was 4+ years ago (although the decision makers are still the same). The downturn started with the Scola fiasco (wouldn't he be nice to have right now?), the Bonner and RJ extensions and it has continued this off-season when we could not attract a single player we wanted in free agency. Diogu? Seriously?
@Sofloridabred Glad someone is still awaking and speaking the truth rather than WORSHIPING everything the FO did as well as dreaming some ridiculous trade.
@shawnthefreak Thanks...I give the FO credit for their drafting at the positions we always have. I am also OK with the Hill for Kahwi - long-term will tell. But they have blown our cap to hell with the extensions and seem unable to make any trade of significance.
Id trade jefferson, blair, green for damarcus cousins.. not only will it save us some cap space it also will give the spurs more better options to be younger and be a dominate team
@spursnation670 What make you think the Kings will accept THIS offer?! Even they decide to trade him, they wouldn't want the players you mentioned!
@spursnation670 NO WAY! cousins is ok and all but dude is a head case like no other. on top of that, it would leave us thin at the 3 spot and with manu out indefinitely we are even thinner on the wing with green and rj both going. blair is playing better then cousins has to date and he is an easy guy to coach. all around bad trade
Great another undersized player.. Dont waste your time thinkin this dudes gona contribute i know the age is gettin to the spurs minds signin him id trade for someone like damarcus cousins rumors say his wanting a trade

@LFJeremy He ain't gonna do that. Sure he can put up some points. He is more like a Carl Landry type player, an offense-first bigman. The problem is he rarely being a rotation player these years, failed to play more than 50 games since 2006. In addition, like Blair, he is a serious defensive liability, not a good rebounder neither a shot blocker AT ALL. And now you guys saying he kinda looks like a SAVIOR to our front court and can average 8 boards and 2 blocks? Seriously! LOLOLOLOLOLOL!

Show me where someone said that this was a genius signing. He will help our team because we are very thin at the position that he plays. Also show me where anyone said he is a building block. Show me where someone had high expectations of him. All of those guys you have listed are not even an upgrade to RJ. I am trying to see past your ignorance, but it is just too great. No offense, but don't comment unless you have something worth while to say.@shawnthefreak @LFJeremy
@LFJeremy So your logic is basically just guessing? I guess so. Cuz you can put everyone here and say "if this guy can average ....." That's not reality man. You need to look at his past. If you look into this guys you will be wondering ' how the heck this guy can help our team?' I'm not trying to argue with you, but you guys are just too positive! You guys always make every Spurs signing looks like genius, and sadly it's not. Everytime the Spurs signs someone, even from D-league, you guys whining like he is some kind of future, talent, building block. Come on guys! Diamonds like Manu don't always appear, and even it does, it's not likely the FO would see that EVERYTIME. If this discussion is regarding guys like Josh Howard, Caron Butler, Vince Carter...etc. you should be exciting, but not IKE DIOGU.
I remember he had like a 25 point 11 rebound per 36 minute or something like that one season. Would he be able to get those stats? Sure he is able to. Will he though? Most likely not, since his defense makes him a liability, so his playing time has to be limited. No one is expecting this guy to be a savior, but why else would you comment than to show hope. It is a poor use of energy to just rant on how the spurs suck or whatever. I just think you should try to be more positive rather than knocking on people who hope the spurs would succeed, that is all. I hate the championship or bust attitude here. Shows just about how spoiled some spurs fans usually are. @shawnthefreak @LFJeremy
I mean, to be honest, this guy is extremely talented. His defense is what worries me. He puts up very good stats in a very short amount of time. However, he is very Ian Mahinmi like in some ways. That is what sucks about him. Given the playing time, he easily gets like a 15-10 or so, but like I said, he is sort of a liability. We will see though.@LFJeremy
The spurs is scrimping its budget. Well, Ike Diogu can help but not enough. He is a journeyman who never made good. Let's hope the coaching staff gives him the chance to prove himself and not taken in just a stop-gap. The situation is serious to be lightly taken. Unless the spurs sign a tall banger they may as well kiss the season goodbye. Of course, there is another possibility - next draft season. Hardly a thought. The spurs is fun of drafting shooting guards and small forwards.
@rtesoro440 Another undersized big?
@antarescrane If you ask me I would'nt want them all. :)
But the fact is Bonner is under contract and he is kinda of Pop's favorite because he can spread the floor no matter how terrible his defense is... oh my... If you're talking about bigmen I prefer Pryzbilla, even Kenyon Martin. We need to get strong, and we need to get MEAN. We need someone that is a threat inside that opponents' guys would dare if they decide to attack our basket.
@rtesoro440 You realize that this guy was the 9th pick right? People like him shows you why the spurs tend to stick to "smaller' players, because they are less bust-prone. The spurs do not necessarily avoid big men. Rather, they try to take the best talent available. I really could care less that the season might be in jeopardy. Nothing guarantees a title, and winning the championship is always a long shot because most teams lose. I think Manu getting hurt might not be as bad as some of you make it. Any team that makes the playoffs has a chance to win. If the spurs make the playoffs with everyone healthy, then I think they might surprise some people. If the spurs don't make the playoffs, then they get a lottery pick. Sounds like a win-win situation to me :). Try to be a little more positive. There is no way to predict how everything will play out in the end. I still think that the spurs will make the playoffs, which gives them a chance to win. Just think about, how often are the so-called experts right?
If he is a bust, why sign him at all?
Well, the thing is, he has some role player potential. He would be a star with the right awareness. Has some very nice tools though. @rtesoro440
@shawnthefreak@rtesoro440@antarescrane see you have me confused with someone else apparently. i am not a fan boy of the FO, i do feel they have been the shining example on the hill for the last 15 years, but yeah mistakes are made (scola anyone). kenyon martin can not be signed until mid march, after the chinese season is over. he received a buy out BUT his contract says he cant play anywhere else until their season is done. that said, what makes you think kenyon would want to sign with the spurs? he is most likely going to denver when he comes home though rumors of NYC have popped up. manu has NEVER been our best defender, his defense was/is ok but he relies on help more then any wing we have. hill was our best defender before being traded. i agree we need some sort of bruiser in the middle and ike is not that, BUT considering who is out there NOW (not in march now) who else would you take?
@shawnthefreak@antarescrane@rtesoro440 you do realize that the 2 guys you listed where called busts because they where #1 picks and where taken over player that went on to be better then them. not a little bit better a lot, not 1 player many. at the #9 spot ike has some players he is better then, and others he isnt, he falls a bit below where he should be but bust isnt a word used on #9 picks really. his biggest issue limiting his production and time on the floor is not his ability but he has been injured a lot. now for a very small (minimum) salary he is a "safe" signing.
You misunderstood what i said. I actually called the guy a bust. What I meant by "smaller" players was SG, SF, and PG. The person I was replying to was mad at why we did not keep Mahinmi and why we drafted, anderson, joseph, leonard, instead of a big. The reality is that big men are usually more bust-prone. @shawnthefreak @rtesoro440
@shawnthefreak@JohnAbney@rtesoro440 Nobody is saying that RC never makes mistakes. I just wouldn't say that not drafting a big men is a mistake at all. Who would you rather have, Dejuan Blair or Hasheem the bust Thabeet? Yes, we need size, but a big body alone is not the answer. Manu is old, he is not our best defender anymore. Please actually watch the game. Manu gets a lot of steals, but he also gambles too much, and gets smoked by quick guards a lot. Also, tell me who else is available right now? Kenyon Martin is in china, and it seems that he does not want to come back to the NBA? As a back up Ike is not really that bad. IMO it is a high reward, low risk signing. No one is saying that he will be the next shaq or something. Honestly, it would help that he keeps his current level of production. We really needed a back up big, and not we got it.
@JohnAbney@rtesoro440@antarescrane There are certain guys like you people thinking the Spurs FO does EVERYTHING RIGHT. Sadly, we make mistakes, because we are human, so does the FO. I'm citing that Diogu is a bad signing not because he is 6'9". At 6'9" I prefer signing Keyon Martin ( of course he may not wanna come here anyway) The current Spurs need defense, not offense. They have plenty guys who can score but rare guys can defend. One of our best defender, Manu, is down now. Kawhi is a good defender but he is still a rookie learning the system. Tim is not a elite defender anymore. Tiago is smart but kinda thin and still adapting the tempo of the NBA. We need an "enforcer" type of guy, no matter how tall he actually stands.
@rtesoro440@shawnthefreak@antarescrane so let me get this right, you have been bitching all off season (all month of it) that the spurs have to sign 2 pf/c and now they went and did just that and your not ahppy with the one they signed? beggars cant be choosers man. who would you rather have? big z? sure he is 7+ and ike plays more defense. or maybe erica dampier (see big z). or maybe mbenga, he is good for 6 fouls a night, fasenco? yeah he is young, and big, and is SUPPOSED to be defensive minded but then he could not get off the bench on any team he has been on and still wants 3 mil a year. maybe we can trade manus broken arm for d howard, that should solve our problems.
bottom line the spurs have a long row to hoe and while i dont think ike is the answer, he is a better choice then most every other option.
