Report: Spurs taking a closer look at Sanikidze

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

According to Sportando, the San Antonio Spurs scouts Dennis Lindsey and Claudio Crippa will be in Italy to take a closer look at forward Viktor Sanikidze.
VS_Project_SpursSanikidze was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2004 NBA Draft but his rights were traded to the Spurs on draft night. In 2007, he played for the Spurs at the 2007 Rocky Mountain Revue Summer League and scored 15 points.

Viktor is still set on making it to the NBA.

The main point for achieving success in basketball is to work hard but talent plays a key role. No matter how hard you train, if you don’t have talent you can’t achieve success. You should have both talent and desire to train all the time. Nowadays I am really content with what I have achieved in basketball, of course there could have been better situations at times, but taking in to account my trauma and injuries I am quite content with what I have done until now.

Also, according to Sanikidze, the recent lockout hampered him from coming to the NBA.

"I had quite a good season this year, and I had a chance to play in the USA but NBA announced Lockout, it’s a kind of strike and until February I’ll not have a chance to play there, however I am still in contact with one of the NBA teams."

Sanikidze is still young, 25-years old, and has recovered from a recent injury so it's not out of the realm of possibility he can join the Spurs in the near future.

Currently, he is playing with Virtus Bologna of the Italian League and is averaging 13.3 points, 62.5% shooting, 67.1% from the free-throw line, 10.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists in 31.8 minutes.

Of our overseas drafted prospects... would love to see more progress reports on De Colo and Ryan Richards (his athleticism reminds me of our beloved Admiral)... and despite his past injuries, wonder if we've considered bringing Javtokas over on the cheap for a 6'11" big body. Karaulov of course hasn't become the prospect we hoped... I see a Spurs champ team in the future with Parker, Kawhi and Richards as our new trio... with De Colo (and Manu?) coming off the bench.

@JeffProjectSpurs
Richards definitely needs a couple years of seasoning... look forward to Nano coming over. Cory Joseph seems to have a good head on his shoulders... hopefully Cory and Richards can be strong together. Forget when Lorbek's contract is up. Do you think McDyess might sign a late season contract for the playoffs... that it might be the plan all along?

@aespurs@Ironwill71@JeffProjectSpurs I couldn't agree more the thought of Splitter Richards and Hibbert would be INSANE. Sort of like the Lakers in their championship days. Would be an idea for the future especially if the Dwight decides to play in Dallas.

@JeffProjectSpurs it was retweeted by hoopsfix.com but from a Eurobasket site I think. RR's numbers dropped over the last few games he played with them but where strong up to that point.

@aespurs @Ironwill71 @JeffProjectSpurs Last I heard was a few weeks ago Richards left his Swiss team Luango Tigers for personal reasons. As a Brit and a huge Spurs fan I hope he can keep his career going forwards. With the way Splitter plays they could compliment each other nicely!

@Ironwill71@JeffProjectSpurs yeah i was wondering the same thing about mcdyess since he retired so quietly but i guess we'll have to wait and see. probably not though cause itd probably just throw off chemistry. and lorbek just signed a new contract this past summer for a few years i think so the only way for the spurs to get him anytime soon is to buy him out. as for richards im extreeeemely excited to see him play and hope hes developing nicely. do you know who he is currently playing for? i thought it was gran canaria but everywhere i look for him or any stats on him i cant find anything at all. but i have heard that hes still growing and is apparently massive for a pf at 7'1 now who can spread the floor. I was trying to think of ways to pair him with another quality center in the future. i highly doubt dwight would ever come to small market sa, buuuuut i did notice someone else that could be picked up. hibbert! now i know hes not a dominant big man, but hes still learning and growing and could become a very good quality center on both ends of the floor. and did anyone else notice indy didnt give him an extension?! we might have money to pick him up this summer once td contract is up while everyone else is busy with the dwight craziness. it would help us so much in the middle if timmy retires and if tim picks up another two years for cheap then it finally gives him a true center to play next to again and further down the road gives us a huge advantage. imagine having a 7'1 pf in richards and a 7'2 center in hibbert. HOW WOULD THAT BE FOR TWIN TOWERS?! sorry i just got really excited. i wish i could be a gm : /
