Report: Kaman to stay with Hornets

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

The San Antonio Spurs struck out on landing free agent forward Kenyon Martin and now it seems any hopes of acquiring New Orleans Hornets' Chris Kaman are dashed as well.

The Spurs were reportedly interested in adding Kaman to the roster to bolster their frontline but according to ESPN's Marc Stein, the Hornets are ending Kaman trade talks.Kaman_Project_SpursUnless the Spurs have any other big men in their sites to address their need up front, it seems the team will be rolling with Tim Duncan, Tiago Splitter, DeJuan Blair and Matt Bonner for the rest of the season.

Thankfully Splitter's game has improved and can be a force in the paint but like many Spurs fans know, after TD and Splitter, the Spurs lack the needed size to contend with other teams such as the much bigger Los Angeles Lakers or Memphis Grizzlies. Not to take away anything from Blair and Bonner but Blair is undersized and Bonner is too one-dimensional.

So now what Spurs fans? Are there any other bigs the Spurs should target?

I guess the front office is just banking on TD taking a dip into the hot tub time machine every few games until we win the chip.

I did find the "hot tub time machine" part funny. lol. That's a hilarious movie!

Well, like I said earlier, I think the front office is waiting later in the season because teams always waive some players before the deadline. So hopefully, one of those players will be a decent big that the Spurs can go after.

Like I said, the spurs will not be able to sign KMart or Kaman. Money is precious to them. The jazz has many big guys. Perhaps they are willing to trade Derrick Favors for RJ, Joseph and Anderson. It is good place for Joseph where they are short of pg and Anderson to grow. Hibbert is good now but the pacers may not let go. Maybe next season the spurs has a chance of landing one of the many big guys in the draft, Dummond or Oriacki of the huskies, Sullinger of ohio, one of the plumlees of the duke, Elezi, Leonard, Fab Melo, Dieng, to name some. Derrick Character of the lakers if available is good. It is mistake to let go of TP. TD can retire and join the coaching staff instead of signing for the minimum which is an insult anyway. Yes, Perry Jones of baylor.

Anyone else excited about the possibility of HIbbert this off season? He refused to sign an extention and worked out with a bunch of spurs during the lockout and we will have Timmys money off the books.

Didn't Hibbert make a statement that he wanted to be a pacer? But he would defentanly be a great addiction @TylerCameron

I like the idea of leon poe, but that doesn't look like that will happen so heres the drastic plan for the spurs this off season. Trade RJ and Parker to the N.O. Hornets for one of their lottery picks. Trade James anderson and Matt Bonner to the pheonix mercury for a ham sandwich with cheese. Sign Roy hibbert this off season with the extra money laying around or use the New Orleans pick to draft Meyers Leonard or Jared Sullinger. Use the other first round pick on Lillard or Kabongo or Teague. Use the second round pick on either Melo, Gobbert, Lima or Nogera. Re-Sign Timmy for the Veterans minimum or move on(sorry he's not worth a max contract any more). Let Ford walk and I'm still out on Blair(remember when he used to rebound?) Bring over Nando, Bertans and Richards and start rotating them on the spurs and toros. So the new roster would look more like this.
PG Nando de Collo, (Teague/Kabongo/Lillard), Cory Joseph
SG Manu Ginobilli, Gary Neal, Danny Green
SF Kwahi Leonard, Davis Bertans
PF Tiago Splitter, (Jarred Sullinger/Augusto Lima), D-Bear
C Roy HIbbert, Ryan Richards, (Nogera, Gobbert, Melo, or god willing Meyers Leonard)
So theres my spurs overhaul, Sorry Tony Parker, you were a causualty of rebuilding but with the late first round pg quality in this years draft combined with having Colo out there AND your our biggest trade asset. SUPER DEEP draft this year, I'm not sure who i wouldn't get rid of for a top ten pic.

I like some of your ideas, but the thought of Tim Duncan on a different team is just wrong. I can guarantee you he will retire as a Spur.

Ya, I don't wanna see timmy anywhere else either, BUT i cant stand the thought of a 2-3 year max deal even more. Look at his numbers this year. He is probably putting up worse numbers than any other max contract player. Sorry Timmy, it hurts, I still have 2 jerseys for my self and my 2 boys both have duncan jerseys.

agreed with Emicris and ljharris. yea, Timmy's not going to get a max contract, and i'm pretty sure he knows that, which led me to believe why he opted in after the 2010-11 season because he did have the early-termination option. i don't think he'll sign the vet's minimum, but it'll be a lot less than $21 mil he's making this season. no way will Duncan move on to another team. he's done so much for S.A., that just ain't gonna happen. anyone who suggests that again should not be a Spurs fan anymore. plain and simple. and ljharris is right, his numbers are down because his minutes are down. Pop's doing the right thing by keeping him fresh. if you saw the last two games, Duncan can still play better than some of these big guys out there.

@TylerCameron His numbers are down because his minutes are down!!!! But when he does get some decent run, TD can still bang with the best of them. After so many years on max money, I really cant see Timmy demanding a max contract.

@TylerCameron

Well, I'm pretty sure he'll take less money for sure. Not sure if it will be the vet's minimum, but it will be low enough to allow us to sign somebody decent. And we can always amnesty RJ this coming offseason since we didn't use the amnesty.

As for his numbers this year, I think it's at least better than last season's numbers.

I really hope we make a strong push for Hibbert!

Dang we need a big body down in the paint man were too much of a jump shooting team right now!! I seriously ask when's the last time a jump shooting team has won a championship? I can't remember? Maybe the Pistons??

I wasn't a huge fan of Kaman to begin with. In all honesty he would've been marginally better than say Nazr Mohammed in 2005, but the fact is, that as a low post threat and adequate defender, I don't know that he was THAT much better than Tiago is now. Our current rotational issues like generally in the fact that offensively, Tiago and DeJuan Blair are too close to do anything together (that and the obvious shot blocking/big man need). Andy Varejao is actually a legitimate option, but again, can we offer anything worthwhile? Though, while we're considering that, how about Ronny Turiaf, who was sent to the ailing Wizards? I know they'll be hesitant to part with him now that Andray Blatche is injured, but still worth a shot to me. What we're looking for is an improvement over (to me) ultimately DeJuan Blair. It's not that I dislike Blair, I just find him to be the most ill-fitting piece in the system.

There's Erick Dampier, Hilton Armstrong, Didier Ilunga-Mbenga, Melvin Ely, Jake Voskuhl, Theo Ratliff, Leon Powe & Etan Thomas in the free agency pool. Sign one of these players, have them practice an run the system for awhile an they'll eventually turn out like Green & Splitter, not that Green is a Center or plays 5 position but it takes time to adjust to a Spurs system. Takes time and dedication for plays to develop in someone's memory. Erick Dampier, Theo Ratliff & Leon Powe all would be a good addition but the roster is limited so one of these players are allowed on the Spurs roster.

Well, I think the Spurs are waiting to see if any teams will be waiving their players before the deadline. So maybe the Spurs can look for a big then.
