Video: Spurs' Popovich weighs in on Nets firing Avery Johnson

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

By now you have heard about the Nets firing former Spur Avery Johnson as head coach.

It came as a bit of a shock considering Johnson guided Brooklyn to an 11-4 start, but the team did go 3-10 since -- including two losses to those cross-borough rivals from Manhattan and an embarrassing 93-76 loss at home to Boston on Christmas Day.

Clearly, the Nets didn't want to exercise patience with AJ and expected a better winning-record despite the team being practically brand new and simply needed time to mesh. Also, AJ winning Coach of the Month honors didn't help his cause either.

Johnson's former coach, San Antonio Spurs' Gregg Popovich, weighed in on his firing saying he was surprised at what happened, said the Nets should have exercised more patience with Johnson, and much more. Check out what Pop had to say and leave your thoughts on the Nets letting AJ go.

This is the dumbest thing I've ever seen from a franchise owner. Why the hell would you fire AJ? That win loss record doesn't justify anything on firing AJ. He's a very good coach. Maybe Jay Z should fire himself for being impatient. You can't have overnight success in the NBA much more against MIA and NYK. That holds true even if Phil Jackson was hired. Unless you have Kobe and Shaq or Jordan Pippen in the line up.

Avery Johnson aka the "Little General" is like Pop said a "Very Good" coach. Avery didn't get his props in Dallas. Brooklyn didn't really give him a chance. It's unfortunate, but hopefully he'll get the appreciation he deserves somewhere else.

I agree with pop 100%. The "circumstance" is Deron Williams being a coach killer.  Hes gone through 1 HOFer and another great coach in Avery.  Avery proved in Dallas he could take a group of offensive players and instill a defensive identity to them that would get them to where they wanted to be.  Gotta have some patience
