James Anderson could be Ferry's next Danny Green
Written by Michael A. De Leon on .
It was reported last night on Twitter by San Antonio Spurs guard Danny Green that his fellow swingman James Anderson will be calling Atlanta home next season.
The Hawks, who could use some help at shooting guard with the loss of Joe Johnson, could be making quite the sleeper move here. Anderson is a capable scorer and slasher and at times showed signs of improving on the defensive end, but he lost his confidence with the Spurs after he failed to make an impression on the coaching staff when he stepped in for Manu Ginobii against Golden State last season.
Anderson had been the sixth or seventh man off the bench and when the Spurs started Green after Anderson's dissapointing performance, Anderson's time on the floor began going downhill and at times didn't come off the bench at all.
Anderson needs time on the floor, and Atlanta should provide that, so while he had a rough two seasons with the Spurs, the player many called a steal when he was drafted by the Spurs, could flourish in Atlanta.
Good on the Spurs for allowing Anderson to play on the summer league squad to showcase his skills. While i thought Anderson might actually have a shot tomake the training camp roster once Derrick Byars was waived, it's good to see him catch on somewhere.
The move by Danny Ferry to bring over a player he helped draft and that he worked with seems eerily similar to when Ferry was with the Cavs and Danny Green was signed on Ferry's clock in San Antonio.
This is likely a win-win for everyone involved. The Spurs still have an open roster spot and saved some money on Byars' waiving and if Anderson works out in Atlanta, Ferry could be an early season favorite to win executive of the year after unloading Joe Johnson's behemoth of a contract.
JA is WAY more talented than Green, he is just not the type of player Pop likes. Green might already is at his top ceiling but JA is a real deal to become an all-star. Pop just know how to use role players, and JA is certainly not his favorite.
@WOWWOWBAD wow..someone really likes assumptions. JA NEVER outplayed DG on Spurs..if he did, he wouldn't have gotten beat out. And JA has shown NOTHING to suggest he will be an All Star..that's pretty ridiculous. Did you even see him in Summer league? Pedestrian at best, and No, Pops wasnt coaching. And btw, if JA wasn't a pops type of player, why did they pick him?
spurs shold look to trade apg to jaque vaugn in orlando for a big...they re stcked at the moment an only have nelson and sh smith at pg.. but i would only look to move de colo or c joseph cos patty mills is on a roll (and im from aus anlovehim at spurs lol) and garynea even if one dimensional can shoot in clutch like game 5 against memphis even though i wish i could forget that... someone like kyle o quinn or nicola vucovic who spurs looked at drafting the ast 2 years could be a great fit
I don't know why some people are already bashing De Colo. The man hasn't even put on a spurs uniform yet and he already sucks? Come on, at least let him play a couple of preseason games before judging him. Yes his Olympic performance wasn't so great, but come on. He is now on a team with Tim freakin Duncan, Manu freakin Ginobili, and being coached by Gregg freakin Popovich. Come on, if BENO UDRIH was able to make it onto our team and help out a little (let alone win 2 rings with us), I think De Colo will be just fine.
@ajd21 lol Im with you..not ONE game with Spurs and some already saying bust. Pretty ridiculous. Expecting All Stars from late draft picks is just silly.
You know I must have missed those 6 games before his injury, but they must have been pretty good for ya'll to like him so much. In the games I saw him play even if he got decent minutes, he never performed well. He must have really shown something during those games I missed.
@spursfan80 He did shoot/play pretty well in those few games..but that said, theres been plenty of guys that suffered his same injury that never were the same again afterwards.
straight after he was drafted he was shooting 50% from 3 averaging 10 points and about a block per game i remember it and i still like him for it
Ha! So now we are confirming all this cause of a supposed tweet from D. Green? Interesting, sorry, but this is far from being spoken of as a fact until I see it on FB. lol. I hope it isn't true. There appears to still be a potential role for JA in SA especially if there is a deal / trade involving a two guard and possibly a big being shipped out. James appears to want to stay and any mention of him wanting a trade came from his agent or someone else i'd suspect. Good guy and his game is developing in right direction. He just needs minutes and confidence of which we can't promise. Wish him well, but I am not gonna start rooting for Atlanta just cause Ferry is there now!
@Boo-J i would think that DG got the news straight from JA. Can't imagine DG would send it out without being sure. I wouldn't have minded JA staying either. I'm pretty confident he will end up more well rounded than Neal for example. Neal does one thing great, and that's about it. JA could easily get his stroke back PLUS solid D and a slashing game. Hopefully Nando will help us get over JA.
@Spursfan66 Yea Danny doesnt appear to be an irresponsible tweeter. Hec the "rumor" still has us commenting about the situation which is one of writer's main goals. It's a business decision with JA and sometimes timing is everything. Recalling the Scola opportunities, $$ wise and roster wise it just wasnt feasible to sign him. By the same token, the "Mahinmi project" lasted years literally, with no real solid and consistent production on the court. Nando is intriguing, and he can learn some tricks from Ginobli, ya know that off speed stuff Manu does so well. He seems to be a gamer. Distribution of Mills and his minutes should be interesting.
@Spursfan66 Nando is just as awful and dude is SLOW. He looks like hes running through mud and how awful did he just look in the Olympics. Sacre Bleu
@Los6Morales @Spursfan66 lol Nando hasn't even stepped foot on an NBA court yet, so bust is premature. And people did knock NDCs speed before the olympics, but anyone that actually watched saw that speed wasn't as much a problem as some claimed. Very rarely did a player get by him. NDC will very likely benefit from playing alongside more elite players and coaching. No one is claiming he will be All star caliber, but could easily contribute as a role player. Btw, Brandon Jennings wasn't all that productive as a euro player, then came into NBA and played quite well. Stranger things have happened
@Los6Morales @Spursfan66 If you keep your expectations of De Colo dson par with JA's production last year you won't be disappointed. I joke I joke... lol.
James Anderson Is a Pure Talent. Scorer and Defender. If this report is true he should get a major increase in playing time. He will blossom whenever the minutes favor him. And unfortunately that was not with San Antonio.
Good Luck JA
@saspurs101 He will still have to fight for PT I think as Hawks are pretty guard heavy
Some of you guys who comment on here know more about the ins and outs of trading, salary, caps, clauses and all that. Can someone tell me if we are capable of getting 2 cheap guys? You know, one to replace Anderson and that big guy we desperately need?
@ajd21 yeah the way I understand it, as long as the salaries match up the number of players involved does not matter. Like carmelo going to nyc, Denver got a lot of less expensive players for him. The opposite of you scenario is rumored now, Blair & neal for Patterson from Houston. We are giving up 2 players for 1, but the salaries match up.. Like spursfan66 said nando is basically taking JA's spot. But JA was really a nonfactor this past season so him walking doesn't really hurt us unless he plays well when we play ATL....
@spursfan80 @ajd21 You are correct 80, # of players do not really matter in a trade..it's all about salaries being close enough. And in the rumored PP trade, I think all the incarnations of that deal have Blair going to a 3rd team as Houston is chock full of PF/C's. I heard they are just interested in Neal and likely a pick or 2. I would personally really like PP on Spurs. I don't think Blairs knees will hold out for more than a few more seasons, I don't trust his dedication to staying fit OR improving, and I think he would get a bigger offer from another team In FA next summer than Spurs would want to offer. I'd rather get something for him before the deadline (unless he makes some DRASTIC improvement at the start of the season..but I HIGHLY doubt that)
@ajd21 We can sign players to veteran minimum deals, I think we also have about half a mil left in exception..and could always make a trade or just waive non guaranteed players (blair and neal)
And Nando has pretty much already replaced JA
Idk if he will get plenty of minutes playing beind Jeff teague, Josh Smith, and Anthony Morrow in Atlanta. Best of luck to him because it was not getting any better in San Antone
@jtshoopsblog Isn't Teague a PG? And Smith is a forward so why would SG JA be behind them?
they have 3 scoring point guards with teague harris and williams so theyll probably play small a bit and they drafted that jenkins whos apparently a flat out shooter with morrow and kyle korver as well i think so hell have to work for his minutes..theyre pretty stacked as well but i hope he gets a mojor role sad to see him go really
@scottmer.. @jtshoopsblog ya, he will have work to do to crack rotation, but I think he has a shot to get in before a few of those guys.
Personally, I hope he does great in ATL. It just wasn't a good fit here. I've seen moments where this guy looks like he could be a legitimate role player. Like a poor man's Rudy Gay. But the Spurs system isn't really geared to his strengths. Good for him.
@dannyholloway Yeah, I always support former Spurs (even RJ) unless we are playing them of course. I do hope he can turn things around for himself and become more of the player he was projected as.
Its better than riding the bench. Well, hope he finds a comfortable home with the hawks.
It's too bad that it didn't work out for Anderson here in SA. Oh well. I'm certainly glad he's not going to one of our rivals in the Western Conference. Good luck to Anderson and hope he has some success in his career.
It will kinda suck if he really performs for ATL, but the spurs gave him a chance to show off a little when he wanted a trade and he blew it. He never really showed his potential to the spurs so its only right that they dump him. He wasn't in the spurs plans since December...
