Could another veteran small forward be coming to the San Antonio Spurs? Ken Berger of CBS Sports tweeted Tuesday the Spurs were one of six teams to express interest in the Dallas Mavericks' free agent Caron Butler.
"Six teams have expressed early interest in UFA Caron Butler: Nets, Clippers, Bulls, Heat, Spurs and Knicks, per sources.
Berger followed up that tweet by saying that the Mavs and Butler's agent have also talked about the forward's return. Interesting to see the Spurs mentioned as a team interested in Butler since they already have three small forwards on their roster. The Nets and Clippers have the most cap space for Butler, while Miami, Chicago and New York are all more appealing destinations than San Antonio, but all of those teams have other needs. Berger also tweeted the Nets and Clippers will first try to land a big fish whether it be via free agency or trade, while the Heat and Knicks are likely to chase a big man before a small forward.
It'd be a curious move for the Spurs to sign Butler while they have Richard Jefferson and Kawhi Leonard as well. As I wrote earlier, Jefferson could be a goner via amnesty to get the Spurs under the luxury tax, which would allow them to use the full Mid-Level Exception. But isn't the bigger need at the 4 or 5 spots? Is a Jefferson trade in the works? All that being said, Butler would fit the Spurs model really well if he were signed. Stay tuned, looks like the Spurs may be more active in free agency than some of us originally thought.
I know Danny Green is listed as a G but why not see how he and butler do at the 3. And anyway Spurs land Nene?
@totvilla13 argueably the hottest free agent out there? not a shot with our cap space.
I know everyone is hopeful that Nene will come because wants to win, if he does want to win, and would be willing to take MLE he will Join the Heat.
C. Butler in fact plays quite similar style like the RJ BEFORE COMING TO THE SPURS so he kinda has same package like 2 years ago when RJ cames. Then seasoned fans should know what will come next. The FO will force him to "adapt" to become a spot-up shooter and a defender at the perimeter as well as a 4 or 5 OPTION on the team. Butler's defense should be better than RJ's but both are natural born slashers rather than jump shooters. The Spurs will shoot themselves in the foot if they eventually bring Butler here. They will try to make him the 2nd RJ. Butler do have better defense instinct than RJ but also a weaker jump shooter. Not to mention the fact Butler already pasted his prime and just recovered from that season-ending injury. The FO just keep doing the same thing over and over! Since Steve Smith, Finley, RJ, now likely Butler; however, the difference is that Smith and Finley were already very good shooters before they came, so they fits that mold. In RJ and Butler's case, they would be FORCED to become the players they AREN'T. Even if they could somehow give you a nice looking stats sheet (especially on high 3pt percentage) they would not really help the team to win a title.
so not sure where to put this comment but i noticed Andres Nocioni is likely to get amnestied/waived. for a vet minimum or low end salary i would love to put him in, especially if RJ is gone. any thoughts? hell there has been some (minor) talk of scola being amnestied also. how about we sign scola to the mid, noch to a vet minimum to play along side manu, we would nearly have the whole gold medal starters on our team lol.
@JohnAbney Chapu will be a great addition to the team. A team player and a fearless competitor like Manu. He can play defense and hit from mid/long range, can play both foward spot. The only thing that bothers me is that he did not play much last season whether in the 76ers or the Kings. Don't worry about his abilities and desire to win, conditioning will be the major issue.
Come on,the spurs is not a team of "shorties". They have demanding needs and these are pf/c. Why not try greg oden? He might work. Who knows, he could be another robinson. The fellow has been unlucky. Give him a break. Besides, the spurs need height.
@rtesoro440 No cap space
@rtesoro440 The Blazers are rumored offering Oden approximately 8 mil so they seem still have higher faith in him than Brandon Roy. Since Oden is a restricted FA, don't think the Spurs can offer him bigger/longer contract.
@rtesoro440 NEVER say break around greg oden, his legs cant handle it.
well, i asked Larry Coon of ESPN that if the sources are true, are the Spurs also trying to trade or cut RJ? his answer: "Yep, they could be looking at Butler as a cheaper alternative. Jefferson makes nearly double what Butler would get as an MLE signing."
it does make sense, but still would like to get a big man first.
@RG8907 How come he can be so sure that Butler will be willing to sign the MLE?
@shawnthefreak well first, Butler's coming back from an injury, and second, he's on the wrong side of 30, but only by one year. but the main issue is that knee of his, and i'm not so sure a lot of teams would be willing to spend more than the MLE.
@shawnthefreak true, but Miami is too focused on tryng to get every big name out there, and i haven't heard reports of OKC having interest in him, and OKC fans have been hoping for Battier to come to their team. but i agree to the fact there are other teams like the Bulls and Clippers that would want to sign him, but the Spurs still have their shot.
@RG8907 You are right with the fact. But I still don't think Butler is goint to sign the MLE HERE in SA. I can believe he could sign MLE where in Miami or OKC though.
Im also worried about his knee. Im also worried about the fact that he was basically stealing from Mark Cuban for the majority of his contract with the effort level he gave.
yea, my thought is the only reason we'd have interest in Butler is if perhaps we are working on trading RJ. other than that, i would pass. Butler is great, but as we all know, we are all focused on getting a big man.
