Shaq lists Robinson among top 5 centers of all time

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

Shaquille O'Neal and former San Antonio Spurs great David Robinson had a rocky relationship stemming from an autograph incident when O'Neal was playing high school ball at Cole High School in San Antonio.

Then there was Shaq's autobiography, "Shaq Talks Back," where Shaq questioned how good Robinson and Tim Duncan would be if they were not paired, called Robinson a "punk ass," angered because Robinson won a title before he did, and was peeved Robinson won the scoring title in 1994.

Not to mention his dunk on Robinson during the 1995 NBA All-Star Game in San Antonio also added fuel to the fire.

Of course they had their personal battles on the court, reaching its apex during the height of the Lakers-Spurs rivalry, but now that Shaq is retired, he considers Robinson one of the best centers of all-time:

One of the game's greatest centers considers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to be the best to ever play the position. And, excluding himself from the conversation, O'Neal considers Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Hakeem Olajuwon and David Robinson to be among the top five centers of all time.

I'm sure all of the verbal shots and incidents were just used as motivation for Shaq on the court but it's good to see O'Neal listing "The Admiral" as a top-five center. Of course any top-center list must have O'Neal's named penciled in as well.

What do you think Spurs fans? Is it all "water under the bridge," or do you still harbor any resentments towards Shaq?

SHAQ IS TRYING KISS-ASS FOR HIS PERFECT RESUME FOR HALL-FAME.He always been jelious of David Robinson because he was main attaction in town he grew up in.He expected fans to worship ground he walked on because he went cole H.S. If you fans of basketball and u beleve in SHAQ put downs to players as Robinson,Kobe and others as just joking around,he FOOLED YOU ALL!! Did any other player ever show dislike for ROBINSON OR KOBE or they berated any other player, answer is NO!! Everyone SHAQ negative comment about has never has other problems with different players. He had a big ego that could not hanle KOBE being main star and DAVID being a great center as him in town he grew up in. SHAQ when u left orlando your stop should been SaA not L.A. and your journey could ben better. SHAQ u still suck at free-throws after 19yrs and you were never funny but goffey stupid on camera

All is fair in love and war, Shaq could have easily left Robinson off of his personal all-time list but he didn't. His sincerity and his time as one of basketball's game needs to be respected.

A top 10 player of all time and one of the best characters in the history of the game. In his prime he could have taken any all-star level wing player to the finals. We won't see another big man with his set of skill's come around for a long time.

i'd be lying if i said i had no anamosity towards Shaq. after caling five-0 a "punk ass", and the Spurs a WNBA team, Shaq left LA and became more tolerable, to go with my theory that LA sports corrupt people. Shaq was always a big, fun-loving goof. you can say what you like, but the NBA is wiorse off without him.

@coachb I have a funny story from that WNBA joke. A reporter called Shaq out in the lockeroom after the Spurs-Lakers game directly after that comment when the Spurs embarrassed the Lakers and asked how he felt getting blown out by a WNBA team. Shaq was fuming and started cussing at the media. I finished up my interview and got outta there.

Robinson didn't play for the Spurs until 1989 when Shaq was a freshmen at LSU. Shaq made it up.

@Dave_McNulla I don't know why more "media" folks do not acknowledge this bit of fiction on the part of O'Neal. Unless he was try to get an autograph from David's acadamy days, but he clearly referenced his Spurs days as the snub. Regardless, glad he's no longer playing (O'Neal, that is).

I'm sorry, Jeff. Shaq will always be on my list for most hated players. I will always call him "The Big Blob", even though he's retired now.
