According to HoopsWorld, the San Antonio Spurs had a deal with the Portland Trail Blazers for Tony Parker but the deal died when the Spurs wanted Richard Jefferson involved in the deal:
The San Antonio Spurs and Portland Trail Blazers nearly completed a blockbuster trade on Wednesday afternoon, but the deal fell apart in the late stages. San Antonio was prepared to ship Tony Parker and the #29 pick to Portland in exchange for Andre Miller, Nicolas Batum and the #21 pick. Other players would have been included in the trade to make salaries work. However, the deal died when the Spurs insisted that Richard Jefferson somehow be included. Since San Antonio's attempt to add Jefferson, talks have quieted, but they could pick up tomorrow if one of these teams has a change of heart.
Seems the Spurs are pushing more for Jefferson and his bloated contract in any Parker deal. But as said before, Jefferson's contract, coupled with his less-than-spectacular play on the court, makes any deal involving him difficult to sell to another team.
If the report is true, had the Spurs traded with Portland, they would have gotten older by adding Miller but Batum would have been a nice addition adding youth and athleticism. Plus the Spurs could have used the 21st pick to possibly select a player such as USC's Nicola Vucevic.
However, Spurs GM R.C. Buford shot down any reports the team was shopping any players and I spoke to Parker at Steve Nash's Showdown in Chinatown in New York City and he reiterated his desire to stay in San Antonio and that the Spurs front office has not contacted him regarding any deal.
It would appear a deal involving Parker could be still on the table as the NBA Draft nears.
Thoughts Spurs fans? Think Parker will still be a Spur after the draft tomorrow?
A.Miller is a good passer and a much better floor leader than TP, he may never has the speed like TP, he is an experienced verteran who can back-down other pgs. Batum is a terrific defender and can knock down corner 3s just like Bruce. I know TP is still young, but he will never be a good team player like D-Rob,TD,Manu level. Yes he is probably in his prime but not much potential. Miller will bring veteran leadership and his contract end soon we will have more flexibilty to bring young legs; and Batum is already a very solid player by now, and could only get better. In fact I'm sad this deal went dead, probably was because the RJ issue....All in all, I will take this deal right of the bat !
i still think Parker will be a Spur after the draft tomorrow. this new trade talk and supposedly deal with Portland is just another rumor. i'll admit, Batum would be a nice fit and having that 21st pick could almost guarantee getting a big such as Vucevic, but Andre Miller...ehhhh.
@RG8907 miller would never be a Spur! They would let him go, because he's on a team option. They just wanted to have Camby in the trade so they can get rid of jefferson contract. Camby only has one year left on his contract
@jasonmain759 @RG8907 miller is a very good PG, and i dont see anything about camby anywhere mentioned. i think the real "prize" in the deal would be batum, that kid is a very good defender and he can shoot. he is exactly what the spurs need on teh wing. the thing people seem to be forgetting is george hill can run the show but who is going to back him up? neal is not a great ball handler or passer, manu can only run the show for so long and so the spurs are going to need a PG. miller is a good passer and a bigger PG in the league, he isnt going to have issues with pop like he did with nate and his contract is manageable. im sold on this deal with or without RJ included. RJ can (and more then likely will) become our $11,000,000 back up small forward.
@JohnAbney @jasonmain759 @RG8907 they want to cat salary John, yes, Camby is not mention but jefferson and Camby contract's are very similar in price tag, the big difference is years. In yes, Batum would be the prize and moving up eight spots in the draft also would be prize and itself too, but if we traded for miller he would get ax before the season started because of the money saved. That's why Miller is so attractive because 8 million dollars can be saved by giving him the ax because of his team option. Tony's value is saving our franchise MONEY, plain in simple, if Tony gets move tonight it's because of Money, Nothing Else! One thing else Tony is great PG but were not a city or franchise that can support 75- 80 millin dollar roster and thats what we have right now.
