Mavericks' Terry keeps stoking the fires

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

Just the other day Dallas Mavericks' Jason Terry said the Mavericks can catch the league-leading San Antonio Spurs. He even went as far to say he wants see the Spurs in the playoffs.

Well here we go again.

Terry amped up the Spurs-Mavericks rivalry today saying he wants the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals only to beat San Antonio and move on to the NBA Finals:

"For me, it wasn't necessarily catching them now. We'd much rather catch them in the Western Conference finals and then go onto the championship. Like I said, we're going to catch them sooner or later. It's definitely got to come to that. How we finished last year, us and them, they knocked us out. The year before we knocked them out, so this is it. This is like Thrilla in Manila Part III. The Trilogy, so to speak."  (espn.com)

You know I'm sure Spurs fans across the globe want to put a muzzle on Terry but for as much as Spurs fans can fire back by saying the Spurs have four NBA titles while the Mavericks have none, Terry himself summed it up best:

"But, they got the rings, we don't. We're still little brother to them, so it's definitely a rivalry. We're watching their score and I know they're watching ours."

That's right Terry. San Antonio does have the rings and Dallas doesn't. Also, I doubt the Spurs care about what Dallas is doing or even playoff positioning. Dallas had the better record last season and what happened in the playoffs when they matched up against the Spurs?

Oh and one more thing Terry, when the Spurs have gone to the NBA Finals, they are 4-0 and don't choke like Dallas did against the Miami Heat.

Isn't it great Spurs fans to know San Antonio is in the head of Terry and the Mavericks?

After going through this entire verbal scuffle. I give you credit "scanydanny" for defending your team to the last detail. We Spurs fans would do the same in defending one of our own if anything ever happend. In all honesty Spurs fans, a matchup with the Mavs and Lakers is inevitable in my opinion. In order to win the war, you must fight the toughest foes in battle. So regardless of how much Terry keeps opening his mouth, he knows and the Spurs know they must beat each other to get the title.

@scanydanny I think Miami may have locked up the East with Bostons "panic" trades earlier today. I had the Celtics penciled in for the East, but after today, not so sure anymore. But then again, the Heat were already shopping Mike Miller which saids they're not comfortable with who they are.

@24writer I look forward to a great series. You know, if the Mavs decide to show up this year...lol.

In the end...who ever wins the West better beat the hell out of Miami if the end up winning the East!! I swear I can almost find my self cheering for Boston.....I shiver at the thought.

@scanydanny First of all you are always welcome here @projectspurs to speak out your mind. The Mavericks are a great team in their own right and we had great playoff battles. I applaud you for sticking up for your favorite team. But Jason Terry seriously needs to shut up and let their game speak for them. I mean he has said enough already this season and he has obviously targeted the Spurs quite often.

Thanks for the comment and read and we are happy to see that even non-Spurs fans such as yourself visit and actually gives his point of view on our articles.

@Robby_Lim @projectspurs Mavs Spurs had a couple of good battles....but the Spurs have won the war over the past several years. Not even close!

I did say in a response below that I do personaly hate it when a player opens his mouth and says something that can serve no purpose other than to encourage an opponent to really want to woop some arse. I do agree in theory. My point was that with all that has been said in the past.....people where a little quick to the gun to call his latest unfortunate verbal diarrhea stoking the flames....that's all.

i'm freakin' tired of Terry and his stupid comments. he needs to shut up and play the damn game.

I don't hate the Spurs. Really. But to say that Terry was stiring up shiz with his comments is stupid. The only semi inflamitory thing he said was that he would like to beat the Spurs in the playoffs..........AND? Other than that he was one knee so he could postion his face just right to kiss the Spurs arse. I mean REALLY...."stoking the fires?"....get a grip.

And I know that in suppoerting the Maverick player in this instance the following argument will hold ZERO weight in Spurs fans eyes....but.....Do you think the Detroit Lions can talk? They won a title......how about the Cubs....they won the title....of course it's been 101 years....but they have won it? Why is it that people hold on to past glories as some sort of stipulation of speaking? Does it help you in the efforts for this year?

@scanydanny Thanks for stopping by. Hope you continue to visit us here at Project Spurs.

I think the issue for SAS fans is how many times JT fires off at the mouth and not to mention he literally punched SAS player Finley in the nuts during the playoffs. There is also an interview he did where he openly admitted it is personal with him when it comes to the Spurs. Listen for yourself. http://sports.espn.go.com/espnradio/player?context=podcast&id=3404833

If anything this makes for one great series if these 2 teams meet.

@scanydanny The main reason why Spurs fans hate the Mavs is because of players like Terry. I for one don't really hate the Mavericks, I just hate them because of Jason Terry, seriously that dude need to stop all the talk until you guys win a title. I can't imagine what he will say if by any miracle they got a ring. Terry is like the little version of Kevin Garnett with more talk.

You know.....I think the Mavs should have tanked the second half of the 02 season to ensure a lottery pich and have a chance at Lebron......seemed to work out for the Spurs and Duncan pretty well.

Mark_M

@scanydanny The Spurs were blessed to have picked Duncan in 1997 after a disastrous year where David Robinson was badly injured.

"But, they got the rings, we don't. We're still little brother to them, so it's definitely a rivalry. How is it EVEN a rivalry if the Mavericks haven't proven/won anything? Terry needs to straighten up, he is a self obsessed PUNK! Go Spurs Go!

scanydanny
scanydanny

@SpursFanHenry Because there is always a rivalry between brothers.....both teams also reside in the same state.....Both teams have 10 years of winning 50+ games (+ to the Spurs...99 season jacked the Spurs streak and that sucks).....do I need to spell more out for you or are you really that dim?

How is Terry giving respect to the Spurs and saying that he would like to see them in the playoffs and beat them to go to the finals "stoking the fires?" You know I bet any team in the West would like to beat the Spurs en route to the Finals. Because they all have the goal of winning the Finals. Terry basically said that the Spurs are going to be in the Finals, they are that good. I would really like to meet them their and beat then to go to the Finals. It's been a great series over the last several years.

By the way I will be the first to say that it wasn't much of a series before that. The mavs got destroyed by the Spurs for years. I was at the last game at Reunion Arena when the Mavs won ONE game aginst the Spurs that series. Dirk had his tooth knocked out by an elbow. Was a great game.

@scanydanny First YOU DON"T HAVE THE RINGS WE DO! I don't care about the Heat beating your ass in 2006. ALL I KNOW IS we have FOUR CHAMPIONSHIPS and you GUYS HAVE ZERO! Oh I remember one more thing, 1st placed Dallas lost against the 8th seeded Golden State Warriors in the 2007 playoffs. Talk about choking big time!

scanydanny
scanydanny

@Mark_M 2006 Western Conference Finals should have been the Finals. That was a GREAT series. down 1-3 to come back and make it 7. Epic performance by true warriors. Spurs where the better team. I mean come on....the Mavs where sporting Keith van Spare and Diop....OMG not to mention Dampier!! They fact that the Mavs made it to the finals should be an impressive feat to any NBA fan!

Mark_M
Mark_M

@scanydanny Yeah 2006 was your legit shot and you guys blew it. You have to admit you just got lucky to get past us in 7 games. That shot by Dirk of a Manu foul was plain LUCK!

scanydanny
scanydanny

@Mark_M First....if you can read.....look below your post agin and start reading....again. You may be interested in the part where I said that the Spurs have the rings.....just saying.

Good point about 2007. I never thought they had a shot though. They were too much in their own heads. 2006 was the only legit shot they had.

scanydanny

Wow! If the Spurs are so unconcerned about the Mavs, why all the hatred? We have the rings....we don't choke...we are ahead of the Mavs (which all Mavs fans will concede). Sounds like you might be a little worried...having to repeat a mantra to help convince yourself.

Be glad Caron went down for the year. And we will see you in the playoffs.

Oh, and for the record. The Mavs didn't choke. 3 refs can beat 5 players on a court any night. Watch that series again. D wade attempted 97 FT for an NBA record. He made 21 in Game 5 alone, another NBA record. Getting your ring handed to you for showing up priceless.

@LFJeremy game 5 was blatant. games 3 and 6 where not. The end of Game 3 simply set the precedent. The Heat where moraly whipped and where let back into the series. Game 5 was the cherry on top of the shiz sandwich that was force fed by the refs. After game 5 the Mavs where mentaly shot. They made one more good effort but it was over.

I agree that Wade was finals MVP. My overall frustration is that the Heat should never have been let back in that game. the heat came out in game 4 with new found confidence and kickjed the living shiz out of the Mavs. Mavs came back and played well, only to be kicked in the nuts repeatedly in game 5....Without game 3 it might have been a sweep. But i figure it would have been 4-1.

the real series that year was the western conference finals. Mavs where lucky to get past the Spurs. Spurs where the better team. mavs had to work for that. No one saw the Spurs losing games 2, 3 and 4. But it shows what can happen when an inferior team builds up some confidence. the Mavs didn't suck, but they had Dirk...and and old Stackhouse and Terry....and.....uh....A few spares and a couple of young guys. that being said they where better than the Heat.

@mdeleon Thank you for agreeing. I agree with your assesment as well in all honesty. It drives me crazy when players make statements that ARE inflamitory. I cringe. I always think "way to go doucher, give them more motivation to woop your arse!"

I can respect the competitive nature and the confidence, but I don't care for it myself.

@scanydanny I know he actually said something that isn't so bad this time, but really, can't he just be quiet and let his game and his team's success speak for him.

@LFJeremy Dirk was spotty in 2007.....agian I say....watch that series agian. The Mavs won Game 3 and 5. The heat EASILY won game 4. I never said it was going to be a sweep. I just said the Mavs didn't lose the series, the refs won it.
