The San Antonio Spurs have waived forward Gani Lawal.
In two preseason games against the Houston Rockets, Lawal averaged 1.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in 11.5 minutes. In last night's win over the Rockets, Lawal finished with three points, one block, and five rebounds in 20 minutes.
The Spurs' roster now stands at 15.
It's interesting that you guys thought that this was a surprise because after the first game I thought it was pretty clear that Hassell was the better player for the Spurs' system. I didn't like the way Lawal played at all -- his jump shot was bad, he was trying to show too much instead of doing the fundamental things, and he was wildly jumping in the air several times and fell over causing concern for the fact that he would likely get injured. According to this draft profile of Hassell (http://www.nba.com/draft/2011/prospects/frank-hassell/) he is everything that we need right now -- a rebounder and a good defensive man to give Timmy breaks in games. I believe that Hassell will be on the team when the Spurs start the season on Sunday and that Zeller will also be waived because he seems exactly like Bonner. Maybe the Spurs will get Chuck Hayes, but I'd rather have Hassell and some money to afford a non-undersized big.
wann bet? Both Hassell and Zeller will be waived. Hayes has signed with the kings? Who is next? Waiting for K. Martin? He will be available march. By then lot of water uner the bridge.
@spurs123 the link you posted doesn't work anymore for some reason, but regardless, i think you're right. i like that Lawal had the athleticism, but after watching Hassell play, i think he could make the team.
What kind of player does the spurs want? The coaching staff must be blind What did Green contribute? Giving way for Hayes? The spurs are really fun of having short players like blair. Lawal could have been the man to take care of the interior which the spurs sorely needs.
@rtesoro440 do you post over on poundingtherock? There is no way there are 2 spurs fans that hate the team as much as you.
No, I don't hate the spurs, I love them. It's my way of waking them up. They let all the big men to pass them up. They like "short" men like Green to man the interior. Watch the grizzlies eat them.
@rtesoro440 your way of "waking them up"? Do you think pop and rc are reading your repetitive comments over and over then all of a sudden they are gonna go "holy crap that guy is sooo right. What the hell where we thinking?" and green manning the middle? GTFOH!
@JeffProjectSpurs Hayes is already going back to Sactown, he cleared a second physical.
@JeffProjectSpurs. True true. Idk why hayes though. I know we say the frontcourt is thin but we say that because we have specialty players and not really all around guys. I mean almost every team in the league has a four man frontcourt, maybe five but that's usually a combo forward. Its usually 2 pf and 2 C. Hayes I admit will make a great pick up, but he was a starter for houston and is gona demand minutes. Where does he get them from? We learned last year that without minutes dejuan gets discouraged, yes we should rest timmy but come on he still gets minutes cause he's tim, and tiago wont grow unless he gets play time, so do we give him bonners minutes? What now with bonner? I mean I know he's a step up from bonner but lets focus on the other four then. You'll pretty much give him good minutes which means odd man out who still gets minimal time is tiago. With lawal it sucks cause you don't get automatic experie.ce like with hayes but with lawal you get tim and blair playing consistent minutes, tiago playing more and hopefully growing, and the leftover you use on bonner running a team out of the stadium raining threes or you use lawal, let him grow and let him learn. Its not a win now situation but id take lawal
What? He was the random big man that I liked the most! His help defense was good, he was quick on his feet, and he played with energy. I thought the other big (hassel?) Looked heavier, not as quick on D and didn't space the floor as well. And was it jjust me or did splitter play hoooorribly. Alright one on one D but whenever he had to rotate over to help the other bigs he seemed slow and lost and on offense he seemed like he was rushing his game sometimes and trying to do too much. I understand most of his mistakes came from inadequate spacing from the second unit but that's where he should've posted up and waited for the spacing to get there so he could go to work. I wasn't impressed with splitter is the point.
Hassell doesn't have to shot, he mans the interior and relieves TD of the job. Maybe in time he will tearn to shoot. Give him time.
@rtesoro440 oo nah that wasn't my point. Neither hassel nor lawal could shoot. Lol. To me both of them were ultimately the same in terms of skill set except lawal seemed better defensively and quicker on his feet and more active on the boards. I'm not concerned about their offense. Both of them seemed pretty similar in that respect
Wow. He looked pretty good on the boards and on defense to me. He played with a lot of intensity, I was hoping he would get a better chance.
