The rumor mill just keeps churning and the latest news relating to the San Antonio Spurs is that former Pacers (and Longhorn) point guard T.J. Ford may be coming back to South Central Texas. Alex Kennedy from Hoopsworld.com tweets that Ford is leaning towards signing with the Spurs.
"Unrestricted free agent T.J. Ford is leaning toward signing with the San Antonio Spurs, according to league source."
Leaning toward doesn't mean it's happening, but chances are this is for the league minimum and while Ford sort of fell out of favor in Indiana, he's still a great option off the bench to play 15-20 minutes. If this happens, I think the Spurs have done about as well as they could have using a league minimum contract. The Spurs obviously wouldn't ask Ford to play big time minutes and he'll be motivated because he's playing for a winner (and most likely for the minimum, so he'll be looking to play well to get a pay raise). By the way, Ford is only 28 years old, not exactly over the hill.
What do you think Spurs fans? This probably means Cory Joseph heads up to Austin to play with the Toros. Everyone cool with that if it happens?
According to Hoops World, Ford will sign with San Antonio this Friday for the veteran minimum.
T.J. Ford is expected to sign with the San Antonio Spurs on Friday, according to a league source. Ford will likely sign for the veteran’s minimum.
http://anzballaz.com/knicks-eye-chandler-set-to-cut-billups/Looks like the Knicks prepare to cut Billups.... should go after him and trade TP for a Bigman.
If Ford can stay healthy and being a pass-first PG he could be a nice addition and maybe eventually a starting PG.
This is a solid addition, think of him as a Speedy Claxton type guard...with a little less speed. Everyone needs to stop freaking out about the Spurs not seeking a big man, just because we haven't heard about it doesn't mean it's not happening. There are enough rumors out there, the big men are just going to be more difficult to sign and will take more "wiggling". Thanks for the update Trevor!
He's good and can come in and ware the other team down when they put in their secondaries. He's really fast and can put up a bunch of points in a hurry. Much better than Jaucque Vaughn and more capable of keeping the pressure on the other teams defense. Not bad
at the vet minimum im ok i guess, im not a big tj ford fan myself but as stated, short periods with pop, manu, tim, tony up in his face settling him down maybe it works.
now the thing is, with amnesty of rj, signing tj and lets just say butler for S&G's thats takes the roster to 15 if mcdyess doesnt retire. this isnt leaving much room for a big man signing without a trade. they HAVE to be looking for a trade or they are going to be at the max numbers of players.
this is an improvement from Jospeh. I did not like that pick in the draft. He is no George Hill though.
Are we looking at any centers? Maybe A. Grey?
@Coxcr20 Same here. I think use a 1st round pick on Joseph was a waste. He would still be there going to the second round. Why leave out such guys like Jordan Hamilton? Just don't get it. However, I think Leonard is a great pick. We at that time was not going to keep both TP and Hill because Hill's rookie contract was expired and based on his performance; he could ask some amount around the full-mid to 7mil/yr. I was thinking keeping GH and trade TP will be better for the Spurs but obviously the FO thought opposite way. Probably because they don't have enough faith in GH to run the team.
For help in the middle, Grey is a good choice especially considering he is cheap. Still hope we can get some fine bigmen... We do not only need someone to help TD, we need some TD can pass the torch to him...
youve got to be kididng me i dont understant how everyone is happy with who theyre looking at...no word on looking for a big man which is what everyone wanted their going to bring in a maverick either way for small forward and now tj ford who will just throw up shots that he is capable of most of the time..im sure they could get a better pg for the minimum, i have said before i wanted carlos arroyo who would be a good fit for the minimum who is hands down better than ford but there arent many others i guess..im just gonna have to get used to it like this..i would also much prefer caron butler than howard
@scottmer.. Arroyo hands down better? i wouldn't say that. better shooter, sure, but there's more than just shooting the basketball. i think Ford's a better passer, which is needed since Parker's a score-first PG. plus, the guy's only 28 years old, so to sign him for the vet's minimum, i think it's good.
@RG8907 im from australia so i havnt seen him play much cos they seem to strictly only show heat lakers or bulls on tv hear but what ive seen is him coming out and shooting leaners and tough contested shots without passing the ball much at all..at the start of last year i saw a lot of arroyo and thought he had pretty good defense as well as offensive game..,maybe not hands down but i think he would be a better option..especially to fit into spurs' system
Good signing for the Spurs! I was hoping for them to sign TJ Ford. Good veteran point guard, not a good three point shooter, but brings depth to the roster!
if we want a veteran to back up Parker and have Joseph play in Austin, Ford would be a good idea. he has a lot of experience, and as mention, he is still only 28. well, R.C. was right back in June, when he said he wasn't done making moves after the Leonard trade.
