Spurs bring back Novak

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

The San Antonio Spurs announced they have re-signed forward Steve Novak. The team did not disclose details of the contract.

Last season with San Antonio he averaged 4 points, 1 rebound, shot 52% from the field, 54% from the three-point line in 8.6 minutes.

The 6-10 Novak is known primarily for his shooting touch from long-distance and though his ability to spread the floor will help the Spurs, this is still not the type of big man the team needs. Novak isn't known for defense or rebounding and the Spurs desperately need that kind of help below the rim.

Currently, Tim Duncan, Tiago Splitter, DeJuan Blair, Matt Bonner and Antonio McDyess (for now) man the paint. Aside from Duncan and Splitter, Blair and McDyess are undersized and Bonner isn't known to be a banger inside nor capable of defending the post.

Novak will help but the Spurs still need to find better interior presence. Something the Memphis Grizzlies exposed last season in the playoffs.

Why not trade Bonner and use cheaper Novak? They basically play the same type of game.

why resign him?..its just taking away money (as little or much as it may be) from an actual big man who can rebound block shots and score down low rather than just having an outside shot...i still havnt forgiven novak for that portland game yet.

With this current roster the Spurs aren't in position to win a title this year or any other year.I don't understand why they didn't / don't address the lack of bigs issue RJ is not the problem in my opinion he's just an scapegoat, you only have two bigs Tim&Tiago Bonner not a true big nor is blair why not go after Dalmbert,Pryzbilla or even Cousins from the D-league team. A quality big that can help out defensively and rebound, is Troy Murphy still out there I've been a loyal fan since "87" and really hope they do pull it off this year but being realistic and true fan of basketball compared to the other elite teams in the NBA they don't match up well. Memphis exposed their lack of size.

@JeffProjectSpurs

what do you think about kris humphries.. hes young, athletic, can shoot from mid range, averaged a double double and 1 block per game and doesnt need the ball on offense cause he gets a lot of garbage points off rebounds etc..he was on 3.2 million last year so spurs can afford him..i think he would be a great fit and could probably start at the 4 with the current roster? i would love your opinion on that one

@JeffProjectSpurs Why won't they address the issue of no bigs? I really hope Dwight Howard stays in Orlando this year and the Spurs really try to put themselves in contention to acquire him Next summer. Is there a real chance George Hill could resign with the spurs next summer & what's up with Ryan Richards,Nano De Colo can they at least get to the D-league I hear "DOUBLE R" has game like Lamar Odum.

@ZILLA@JeffProjectSpurs Is there any possibility Richards plays with the Toros this season too learn Spurs system? Rather than playing with some scrub Swiss club?

Bringing novak in is good. Now the spurs have a small forward. The missing link is a big guy to man the interior. Why not sign Fesenko, a nice reserve to relieve TD some of the burden.
