Spurs 2011 training camp roster, RJ listed
Written by Jeff Garcia on .
The San Antonio Spurs training camp is underway as the team gears up for another run at title number five.
But who is on the training camp roster you may ask? Well I am glad you did.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is that Richard Jefferson is listed even though there were reports a few days ago of the Spurs using their amnesty clause on him. Seems he is sticking around. It could be because the Spurs failed to sign Caron Butler or Grant Hill. Though Josh Howard is still an option.
It's also curious to note Antonio McDyess is not listed. Did he retire? If so, it sure will free up some money for the Spurs to get a free agent.
Check out who is working out with the team (via Spurs Twitter) which includes the usual names and new ones such as newly acquired T.J. Ford, Austin Toros' Luke Zeller and Frank Hassell out of Old Dominion.
The spurs are on training camp with never heard d-league players. Maybe they ranout of money. The hunt for pf/c is on and the spurs recruited, Luke Zeller, Doug Thomas and Frank Hassell. Who are these guys? The hunt for a sf is also on. The prospective players are gone signed with other teams. The spurs should stop searching. The team has Green Butler and Leonard eager to prove their worth. If they will not be used, waive them.
@rtesoro440 they haven't run out of money. they still have the MLE. and again i say, Leonard is not going to be waived, otherwise they wouldn't have traded Hill for him, so stop saying that.
Why look for a sf? They must have a granary of money then. They keep recruiting guys tohey sit the bench. You are right they dealt Hill for Leonard. They signed Butler when he was injured Look for a sf to take their place. If they will not be used, then they are paid to be bench warmers.
and tht's why I holding out for Josh Howard. they will need him to mentor KL if RJ is gone. If Dyess retires and RJ is gone we can have Howard and go get a big in the 5 mil range. That would definitely work for me. The big: Dalembert, Humphries, or even a cheap back up like Kosta Koufos.
@rtesoro440 because there's still a chance RJ is amnestied, so it's still important to look for a SF, and that way, Leonard doesn't get all of the pressure. and there is still a possibility guys like Butler and Green could be part of a trade, or get waived, or go to he Toros, any of those options could happen.
Why not try Butler? The spurs went to the extend of recruiting him while he was injure. It is said that he is worth it. Why wait for other guys?
Ryan is not that great. Kaman is only available via trade and since chandler didn't go to warriors they are going to bid in Jordan. If they get him Kaman isn't going anywhere. We should try for Fresno. Landry is undersized and we can't afford him.
F. Hassell, Doug Thomas, Luke Zeller - who are theswe guys. Kaman, Landry, Fesenko, Mcroberts, Clark are all available. What gives?
@JakeAlmond he's playing in Switzerland and doing well by all the accounts I've seen. He was out for most of last year with shoulder issues so he is getting himself back playing at a good level (not one of the top Euro leagues though). He played for Great Britain over the summer and did well. I would have thought buyout is an option and I wouldn't be against Spurs bringing him over.
Still available is Spencer Hawes. Likely cost 7 mil, but young, big, can shoot.Hawes and a cheap athletic shot blocker - Doug Thomas, Lance Thomas, M Cousin...
Play Butler, all he does is win games. The most clutch college player i have ever seen. Shame what happened in the final four
Lets just keep RJ,no other small forward in the free agent market is more talented than Rj..its his 3rd season, lets give him a chance, all we need now is an interior defense,..make a deal for a talented bigman such as Kaman
You have my vote of confidence. Look for a young, tall pf/c. There are a few out there, free agent and rookies.
Watching the Pop interview on spurs.com, I think somethings definitely in the pipeline. From the bit where pop is asked about Dice's future.... doing something with his expiring contract maybe??
@JeffProjectSpurs I trust his knee more than anyone in our front court (excluding Duncan.) I really don't like this teams chances without someone next to Duncan. A sign and trade for West or a trade for Kaman would be really nice. I just didn't know how realistic that is.
for whom ever it was that was talking about "lets go after greg oden" i TOLD YOU not to say the word "break" around that guy!!!!!!!!
Greg Oden has suffered a setback in his recovery from knee surgery and will restructure his one-year deal with the Blazers for a lesser amount, according to a report.
Oden was examined by his doctor on Thursday and was given the approval to expand his activity.

@JohnAbney first, Roy retires, then Oden gets a setback, and now Aldridge to miss two weeks after a heart procedure. man, the Blazers just can not catch a break.
@RG8907@JohnAbney karma man, its the mike jordan curse! when they passed jordan as the #1 pick AND hakeem someone put an old school voodoo curse on the franchise and they are facing that curse live and well right now.
Glad some pf/c are imcluded in the list of possible players. It shows the concern of the spurs to man the interior. Rj is listed as possible. Good. Now play. Backup are Green, Buter and Leonard.
it appears McDyess might be retiring, but we'll have to see if Pop gives out any updates. have any more info on that Luke Zeller guy, or any of the other guys, Jeff?
@RG8907 Luke Zeller has been playing for the Toros. There is game footage on the D-League iPad app. He's done ok on offence and as the YouTube video shows, he spreads the floor well. On D, there is definite room for improvement. Very Bonnerish from what I have seen so far but that isn't too much.
@CarlAllchin thanks. yea i saw the video. very Bonner-like, but i guess i'll see if i can find any other video or perhaps more info about his game.
I am guilty of picking on RJ, and I am starting to think that it may be because I had such high expectations from him. Yes his defense is weak, and yes he dissapeared in the playoffs, but his season numbers were not that bad. I think high expectations and his expensive price tag is what has us hating him. At this point, I would rather keep him than get VC or Howard who is a punk and always hurt. Everyone is hating on the spurs for not signing a free agent or making a trade, but I don't think it is for lack of trying. I have scene trades posted where we want to dump our awful players for marquee players. it isn't going to happen. The problem is we have 3 valuable trade assets and they wear #20, 21 and 9. We, as spurs fans, have become spoiled because our team has done so well over the years. Now is not the time to hate on them. Last year we still had one of the best records in the league and then we were victim to bad timing on injuries and a very bad first round matchup. So, I say we try to get Grey, Feenko (spelled wrong) or kwame Brown, if we can get them Cheap or we try to figure a trade for Kaman. So, RJ, i will issue an apology to you and hope the spurs do as well and we try to gut out another season.Go Spurs Go.
It seems like RJ will work out with Spurs till Spurs sign someone. Is McDyess retiring? I dont see him on the roster.
