Report: Spurs make an offer to Josh Howard
Written by Jeff Garcia on .
Could the San Antonio Spurs' hunt for a small forward be over? Possibly if free agent Josh Howard accepts their offer.
According to The Washington Post's Michael Lee via Twitter, the Spurs have made an offer to Howard.
Source said Josh Howard has received an offer from San Antonio. JH could meet with Utah this week. #wizards remain in play.
As the report states, the Wizards and Jazz remain a possible suitors for Howard but for San Antonio, should Howard take the offer, it might signal the end of Richard Jefferson's tenure as the Spurs have reportedly will use their amnesty clause on him.
Add the fact Caron Butler, and Grant Hill have spurned the Spurs, Howard might be the last viable small forward free agent San Antonio would like to add to the roster.
What do you have to say Spurs fans? Think the Spurs should add Howard or look elsewhere for a small forward?
If he's healthy, committed to play defense like he did in college and first two years in the league, and his attitude is in check...yes. He's better than RJ in half court offense and defense.
I remember Howard always choking when the Spurs dominated Dallas in the playoffs a fews back.
@JohnAbney Why dont we ask the big 3 to play for free, or better yet they could just use their own money to buy a center for the team. Tis the season right? That is as realistic as Santa Clause.....wait, let's just aks him. Dear Santa, please enlarge Otis' heart in Orlando so that he will trade us Dwight Howard for Bonner and RJ straight up. LOL. (Not a shot at you, just thought it was funny)
Timmy already restructured for less money. For what they have given the team, the big 3 are not overpaid (in NBA standards tha is). RJ is the only HORRIBLE contract we have. There isn't that much left out there and I don't want us to waste money on somoeone that is just ok. Fesenko is our best bet. I don't want Howard.
The Spurs front office has done pretty good so far so I will trust them and keep chearing the Spurs on. What other franchise in sports has a track record as good as ours in the last decade? The Lakers are the closest and we don't spend as much as them and it will always be easier to lure people to CA as opposed to TX
That's right get Fesenko. He is young and can still learn the system. Howard is old and injury peoned.
@JohnAbney sorry. That was supposed to be @rtesoro440 who replied to you:
He is old way pass his time. The spurs drafted so many sf and not using them. I call this wrong economics. Why not ask TD, TP and Manu for a reduction in pay? Then they can sign a big man with consequence. Let;s be honest, money is attractive.
@Coxcr20 i have no idea what your talking about. none of this makes any sense nor does it have anything to do with anything i have said.
I believe we can still get RJ out of here so we can use that money on a BIG MAN, we have good potential SF's, we should more than enough CapRoom for a big man, MC is not coming back, therefore we can use that CapRoom too, we don't need more SF, we need a big man, and a better PG backup cause the one we gone (Ford) is not even a decent defender or shooter, I mean, when it comes to the FAs we suck and thats the bottom line, so therefore I wont be worring about the FAcy no more.
That' ok. Use whatever money we for a big man and forget Howard. We have Green, Butler and Leonard. They young, have a future with the team, learn the system.
So the pacers look to amnesty James posey, thoughts on adding him? He is a good defender and he gave us issues while with NO

@rtesoro440 old, past his prime and all that, yeah but once again a vet minimum type deal would be a very nice addition. considering the guy has made a living on defense he could bring something on that end of the floor for short periods.
@JohnAbney@rtesoro440 Green has proven himself in the very little time he gets. Can play lock-down D is just the type of player need. Statistically has improved in every category. Also played an important role with N.C. during their championship. the kid will only continue to revamp his game.
@rtesoro440@JohnAbney green is garbage IMO, butler is unproven especially after his terrible knee injury, and leonard WILL get playing time BUT he isnt going to get starters minutes from day one and i would be surprised if pop gives him more then 20-25 minutes a game all season. posey has been in the league, he knows what it takes, he has always been a good defender, and again for a vet minimum salary could be a single game changer when the time comes. shaq? GTFOH man now your just being ridiculous.
Hire a vet? Try s. o'neal fo r change. If we are after experience, there are older players compared to posey. Come on, what is wrong with Green, Butler and Leonard? They were drafted, right?
Well McRoberts just wnet to Memphis for Mayo. I am just afraid that Howard is not the player he once was and he has had so many injuries. I would rather have rj.
So mcroberts is gone. There others like clark ans fesenko waiting. By the way, the deal to send paul to the clippers is off. The spurs can go after Kaman.
i would like kaman, but the clipers still have not matched the GSW offer on Deandre Jordan. If they dont match it, they will keep Kaman.
@JohnAbney thanks. i would li9ke to have Kaman. I still think he ends up in NO in a chris paul deal Not sure what we could offer trade wise. I wonder if the spurs have something in mind.
@Coxcr20 clippers already matched the offer for jordan.

If true, then the spurs just have to make do with Fesenko or earl clark. The would be players are not attracted to the spurs because they can't pay.
i don't like this. howard defense is no longer all that great. he's injury prone and is a me first guy.
Yea, he is old and injury proned. The spurs should be contented with have they have - Butler, Green and Leonard. Next time draft somebody you cn use.
well from my understanding, Pop and RC have some sort of plan involving the possibility of using Amnesty on RJ and Dyss retiring. this could allow us to offer full mid-level exception to Howard (whether he gets a better offer from the wizard and Jazz is to be seen).
I am all for Howard! I would prefer him over Butler, I think he's a better scorer and defender than both RJ and Butler and we can get him at a cheaper price. he is injury prone and in a compact season like this, it could give us problems.
One weakness I can think of is that I don't remember him being a great 3 pt shooter I think he's around 34% or so for his career. So if we only expect the SF to stand in the corner and shoot 3, RJ is probably better than Howard.
Retire mcdyess and amnesty rj? It s no enough to pay a big man of consequence. Signing a sf will not solve the woes of the spurs. What they need is a big man to man the interior. Where will they get the money? Ask for the reduction in pay from TD, TP and Manu. All the money is in their hands.
Signing Howard would be a good step in the right direction. The team needs a scoring punch and if Howard can stay healthy hes a great player. Butler and Leonard are both unproven players to this point. I don't see the front office wanting to risk having them in a pivotal role just yet. Green is a decent player but he is no Howard and is no Jefferson. To get a decent Center or PF we will have to trade for one. There is no way we can sign anybody that is worth anything...
What direction? Draft useless players? Draft Butler, Green and Leonard only to be benched. Wasted money. After all the effort in getting Leonard, draft Butler while injured and not use them. This is wrong economics.
@rtesoro440 None of these players were drafted by us... Either way Pop has his methods and he doesn't trust rookies. San Antonio doesn't develop talent quite the way other teams in the league do.
@rtesoro440 TD was number 1 pick he deserves trust... TP if you remember took a long time to earn pops trust as did Manu.... Green is a nobody. Butler might be good.... Leonard might be good too.... But Howard is a proven competitor. Teams that are rebuilding start rookies they just drafted unless these guys are superstar material. The Spurs draft overseas talent and pick up these nobodies cheap... Leonard came a great cost but honestly TRUST Green.... I trust Jefferson before any of those guys. Leonard very well could be that guy but for now he is just a gamble and I dont see the spurs risking too much on him right now. Maybe in the future we will have more trust for rookies but that is when we start to rebuild and as it is we are in our own way setting ourselves up for a quick rebuild.
Don't trust rookies? Then they shouldn't be participatin g in drafts. Just trade with other teams. What about TD,TP and Manu were they not drafted? Come on just be content with what we have -Green, Butler and Leonard not old people like Howard.
@rtesoro440 Butler and Green weren't drafted by the Spurs. and neither was Leonard, and again i say, Leonard is going to get playing time.
If Dyce decides to exercise his option then sign Howard. We all know the spurs system and they want a Vet who is proven. Howard is proven and is looking to have a good year. He will thrive in our system and is used to the structure from Dallas. I'd be happy to see him on our side for once.
I agree, and people may be passing judgement on him in 2011 for things he said in 08' but the truth of the matter is I watch games for basketball 1st and off the court things are out of my hands anyway so I don't concern myself with that unless it deters the chemistry of the team. As of now he hasn't had one practice with the team so we can't really pass judgement on him. What happened to second chances? Besides he has completely healed and feels really good he has said. And it would be shame if he plays like he did before and we didn't get him. If people havn't been reading the Washington post on Howard in the last weeks he has been a big part in mentoring the young guys in the Wizards team and has been applauded for such efforts.
There is no need to sign Howaed Even without jefferson the lineup is sufficient with Green, Butler and Leonard around. The more pressing issue is a big pf/c to man the interior. J.Mcroberts is an unrestricted free agent so are Fesenko, Landry and clark. Forget signing a sf.
@rtesoro440 are RC and Pop willing to risk Tim's last realisitic shot at a championship on unproven rookies? Probably not.
I don't think you'll see Leonard play more than 10,15 min a game. I really doubt pop using either Green or Butler unless someone gets injured.
Having said all of that without another quality big our shot at a championship is not that great!
Risk? Then why draft them? If Butler and Green or Leonard for that matter are useless, why draft them? Money wasted. The spurs can't sign a decent big man because all the money is invested in TD, TP and Manu. Ask them a reduction in pay and use that to sign a big man with consequence not a sf like Howard.
@rtesoro440@Spursforever69 EIther way the SPurs couldn't sign a great big man because we aren't a destination players prefer. We only acquire talent through the draft or through trades. Free Agents coming to San Antonio just doesn't happen as often as we would hope.
